#Jhoti, #Chitā or #JhotiChitā is a traditional Odiā art form that is made using rice paste. Jhotis are very common in rural areas where women draw simple to complex patterns on walls, floors, pavilions of village deities, streets etc. using their bare fingers. Sometimes, brushes made up of twigs wrapped with cotton clothes are used to draw intricate Jhoti patterns. The Jhoti paste (pithau) is prepared by grinding soaked white rice and mixing it well with water to maintain a watery viscosity. Jhotis are believed to be auspicious and a favourite of Devi Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, fortune, beauty, fertility and food. Symbols specific to Vaishnavism like foot prints of Devi Lakhmi, Lotus flowers, elephants, grains, Chakras and flowrs are very common in Jhoti motifs. Although, Jhotis are drawn throughout the year on the occasion of several festivals and celebrations, they are very specific to Mānābasā Gurubāra (A Lakshmi Pujā which is celebrated in every Thursdays of the Hindu month of Mārgashira), Raja, Gajalakshmi Pujā, Kumāra Purnimā, Kārtika Purnimā, Dola Purnimā and Marriages. Jhotis are also drawn on granaries and earthen pots used in festivals.
झोटी, चिता या झोतीचिता एक पारंपरिक उड़िया कला है जो चावल के पेस्ट का उपयोग करके बनाई जाती है। झोटियां ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों में बहुत आम हैं जहां महिलाएं अपनी उंगलियों का उपयोग करके दीवारों, फर्शों, ग्राम देवताओं के मंडपों, सड़कों आदि पर सरल से जटिल पैटर्न बनाती हैं। कभी-कभी, सूती कपड़ों से लिपटे टहनियों से बने ब्रशों का उपयोग जटिल झोटी पैटर्न बनाने के लिए किया जाता है। झोटी पेस्ट (पिठउ) भीगे हुए सफेद चावल को पीसकर और पानी के साथ अच्छी तरह मिलाकर तैयार किया जाता है। झोटियों को शुभ माना जाता है और यह धन, भाग्य, सौंदर्य, उर्वरता और भोजन की देवी - माता लक्ष्मी की पसंदीदा हैं। वैष्णववाद के विशिष्ट प्रतीक जैसे देवी लखमी के पैरों के निशान, कमल के फूल, हाथी, अनाज, चक्र और फूल झोटी रूपांकनों में बहुत आम हैं। हालांकि, साल भर कई त्योहारों और समारोहों के अवसर पर झोटियां तैयार की जाती हैं, वे माणबसा गुरुवार (एक लक्ष्मी पूजा जो मार्गशिरा महीने के हर गुरुवार को मनाई जाती है), रज, गजलक्ष्मी पूजा, कुमार पूर्णिमा, कार्तिक पूर्णिमा, दोल पूर्णिमा और विवाह के लिए बहुत विशिष्ट हैं। त्योहारों में इस्तेमाल होने वाले अन्न भंडार और मिट्टी के बर्तनों पर भी झोटियां बनाई जाती हैं।
