I did not truly understand or liked this song until seeing this video!!! This perforance and rendition of the song gives me hope!!! he's got a really unique voice....I like that he's got a diverse voice to because I heard him singing maxwell "a woman's work" which completely differs from this song. But he sounds excellent. What a beautiful song

Isabella Novosel I'm sure there are many versions, but the purpose of these songs were to pass messages through slaves. The true "original" version I'm sure was a'cappella from some slave. These songs are still common in Black churches, as they have been in mine. Think about the song, "Wade In the Water", which guide the slaves to take to the water. Just look up Negro Spirituals. They have been modernized and arranged with instruments, but the original "writers" of the song probably were not allowed to read and write as slaves. "Keep your hand on the plow and hold on..." serves to encourage one not to give up, for the slaves to keep going, and to remind them of how Jesus saves. Slaves were constantly stripped from there families, their cultures, everything but their faith. Spirituals and faith in God is what kept them going, and continues to keep us going....
