  • Welcome to Sensible Secondhand Reviews, the series where we take a sensible secondhand car worth between £1000 and £5000 and put it through its paces in a very straightforward manner! This time we have a 2015 Suzuki Celerio 1.0 SZ4, which has some of the lowest running costs of any car on the secondhand market.

    Little bit about myself ....
    After a relationship break up 12 months ago I decided to treat myself ,,, I bought myself a 69plate civic type r ......
    Since the lockdown of march last year iv drove 1200 miles ,,, a little crazy when the Honda is costing me £503 pcm on PCP ....
    So I decided last week to do the sensible option of looking for something cheap cheerful and reliable..
    I stumbled across an Honda dealer that had forsale a 68 plate sz2 dualjet.with 9k on the clock and that would take my civic as part exchange,,, we did the deal and I lost 800 quid over the year on the Honda so very happy ....
    Right ....... Moving on to the celerio,, it's basic it's underpowered, it's a boring little thing really ,,BUT Im getting 68mpg around town ,,and it's perfect for town driving ,, having come from a performance car I expected pulling my hair out driving the Suzuki .
    You do get bullied by Audi's
    You don't get lightening acceleration BUT it's pretty fun ,, it's cheap to run it's cheap to service ,, iv paid £300 for a 3 year service plan ,,, I damaged a tire on my civic which cost me £330 for a replacement,,,
    Also let's be honest guys a 320bhp civic 25mpg service was 650 quid insurance was bonkers.
    I do miss the power but I also love driving the little celerio ,, it's a basic honest cheap reliable car and very very very cheap to run ,,
    Takes £50 to fill up and the gauge doesn't move till you do 100 miles ,,
    My neighbor as an alto and after being a bad egg driving while banned it's been parked up for 3 years ,,, he had a local mechanic collect it last week of his drive ,,
    Full service
    Full mot
    New pads discs and a battery cost him just over 300 quid and it started and run perfectly after 3 years ,,,
    SUZUKI SUPER RELIABLE SUPER CHEAP SUPER BORING !!
    but weigh up the pros and cons mine is saving me a fortune and I know every single time I turn the key this little celerio will start ...

      Wow, Lee! Welcome to the channel and Sensible Secondhand Reviews, it is a pleasure to have you with us. It is interesting you mention the performance version of a successful hatchback being changed for the humble Celerio. Must have been quite an emotional journey. A very different type of a car, but the Celerio probably has everything that you need when you think about it. Suzukis are indeed incredibly reliable, and this simple little car seems to be holding up well, one or two build quality issues aside. It was quite fun to drive, really easy, but needed winding up to make any reasonable progress, whilst still getting over 50 mpg. I am glad that you are enjoying it ever so much, it's really what this show is all about. Colin also has a 2013 Mini Cooper SD which was also featured on Sensible Secondhand Reviews a few weeks after this, very different from the Suzuki indeed. I do hope that you enjoy some of the other videos on the channel as well.

    A very enjoyable video. I love that this car looks like a cross between an Alto and a Swift. Suzuki are good at making practical, reliable and economical small cars so it's reassuring to see that 5 years on, this one still looks good. Suits the metallic red too

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes sir, got to watch those Audis. I think that is a good way of summing up the styling. They are reliable cars, even if there are a few bits which are not quite as high quality as one would hope. The metallic red does indeed look quite good, and it is surprisingly practical as well as very cheap to run.

    Thanks for reviewing this car. I used to own a VW UP and loved driving it around town but found it struggled with motorways and hills. That was forgiveable given the ethos of the car. The one thing that bugged me though was the lack of a resting ledge for my left foot. On longer journeys it made driving quite uncomfortable. That seems to be the norm for all city cars.

      Well, I actually have reviews of the Volkswagen Up! and Skoda Citigo on the channel now (this was recorded back in 2020), also on the Sensible Secondhand Reviews playlist. This video is a bit rubbish, to be honest... Yes, with the 59 bhp engine, the Ups!, Miis and Citigos can be quite slow!

    A very lovely vehicle! I'm trying to think what this vehicle reminds me of, I can visualise another vehicle from either Suzuki or another Japanese brand, but somehow my memory is failing me. I do dislike intensely those rear-seat headrests; when fully lowered, they press uncomfortably press into your upper back and shoulder blades unless adjusted upwards, THEN you can get comfortable!
    Nice to see this is a small 1.0 three cylinder; nothing sounds like a three cylinder when revved hard, the sound becomes addictive!
    It also comes off as extremely practical, very maneuverable (some of the roads in the UK 🇬🇧 are quite narrow, especially city and small villages) and quite charming.
    I just remembered what it reminds me of; something like a Chevrolet Spark, but the Suzuki is quite unique.
    Suzuki left the US market just after the introduction of the Kizashi, a shame, a nice vehicle, but Suzuki having financial problems which was saved, if I remember correctly, by VAG group, when GM disposed of Suzuki.
    I also remember the original Chevrolet Sprint/Suzuki Swift (or Cultus) had the three cylinder engine, to which Suzuki added a turbo towards the end of the first gen model. A turbo might have made this particular model a bit more sprightly, but it also might cost it in fuel consumption and economy.
    Another brilliant review, I thoroughly enjoyed this!

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the nearest thing I can think of from the United States market would be the Chevrolet Spark, which is made in South Korea. In this country, the latest generation had a 1.0 litre three cylinder engine with around the same horsepower and it was called the Vauxhall Viva. It was discontinued at around the same time as the Celerio as Vauxhall was sold to PSA and no longer had access to General Motors technology without paying a licence fee. I know the Spark has a larger engine in America.
      Like an MG3, a turbo would be better, but it is OK as it is for town use or just going along the motorway. Indeed, the Geo Metro/Suzuki Swift/Chevrolet Sprint probably feels similar to this. That is right, Suzuki have pulled out for a lot of markets now. I would like to try a Kizashi, they were sold over here very briefly.

    This has interested me, I'm contemplating replacing my Almera N16 with a city car.
    I'm surprised that Suzuki is no longer selling the Celerio in the UK as they succeeded with the Alto.
    I think of the Celerio (and HubNut's Daewoo Matiz) as modern equivalents to the Renault 4: practical utilitarian compact transport.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's funny, the city segment is shrinking rapidly. Many manufacturers are pulling out of it entirely due to emissions legislation and falling sales in Europe as well as the very slender profit margins they offer. Suzuki, Vauxhall, Ford and Skoda are just a few examples of companies who have left the sector in the last few years. I would quite like to drive an N16 Almera, funnily enough!

She had run a mk 1 Vitara for 15 years which was remarkably reliable, it sailed through 12 MOTs with no advisories. My daughter ran the original Swift for 10 years similarly, therefore the Celerio was the choice. £200 insurance, 0 tax, great mileage, simple servicing, cheap little tyres and Suzuki reliability but no money in it for the manufacturer hence no longer available -shame, this tends to be the decision all car makers are now making. Strange times at the moment, everyone adding expensive useless mild hybrid ( Fiat and Suzuki especially needless) all running scared of 2030 deadlines, things will carry on very muddled until battery technology changes.
