    Thank you so much for showing the true situations that occur on a small family farm.... i grew up on a sheep farm in Scotland and have worked on a dairy farm in the past (im 43 now), its very refreshing to see a video that shows the rough with the smooth. These things happen and im sure your mum has beaten herself up enough regarding how the heifer got into calf but as i say, these things happen and im sure they dont happen regularly... you cant watch the animals 24hrs a day and it only takes 30 seconds of lapsed concentration for a mistake to be made... Im really glad that you only lost the calf (which is sad and unfortunate) but the mother seemed to deal with it very well as we saw her up and about and her eating, even the wound looked like it was very neat and tidy and im sure you will give the cow great aftercare... you obviously have a very good vet and with both of your help the vet made the best of a bad situation.... dont stress about fainting mate, its happened to the best of us, it can be a very stressful procedure not just for the cow but for you as well as i know how much you love your animals..... Again, thank you for your candid video and i look forward to the next one, hopefully about a much different and better story.

    condolences for you loss, working with the animals you care so much for is emotional indeed. The lessons, sometimes hard, never stop. Grateful for all the experience and growth.

    I love your mum's reenactment of you coming to! Don't feel bad about fainting. I came awfully close to fainting after being at my friend's side while she gave birth. It went from medical staff surrounding her and the baby, to two nurses leading me to a chair. Thanks for sharing even the less stellar moments of farming.

    Ru everybody has days like this, it is nothing to be ashamed off, you did brilliantly helping the vet, your mother is amazing as I have said on your videos before, she reminds me so much of my mother, who is now 75yrs old, but as strong as a ox, keep the work up, the cow being so young happens on loads of farms throughout the work, you can not watch them all the time.

    Your team work gave adorable heifer a second chance 💕🍀
    I think you did marvellous Ru- considering the circumstances and lack of breakfast..

    Fascinating to watch. We have beef cattle bought in at 8/9 months. Guess what, we had our first c-section 3 weeks ago as totally taken by surprise when discovered a heifer in calf. Too young and same result as you but at least we saved the heifer. Thanks for such informative, funny videos always great to watch.

    I've pulled quite a lot of calves and assisted in one caesar (with a live calf and mum). Also the piecemeal removal of a dead calf that was stuck because of a turned head. Farming is hard work and definitely NOT for the faint hearted.

    Love the intro and outtro of the video so lovely to see the farm land, enjoyed the video Ru and Sarah. These things happen when you are farming, we all blame ourselves but things just happen.
    Glad you are ok Ru and you shouldn’t be embarrassed, my midwife fainted when I gave birth to my first child and she was trained and used to it. Well done to you both for always giving it your all.

    Great video Ru! Glad you shared this, true representation of farm life. I agree with you it was likely the shredded wheat!! Not enough protein. I'm a retired veterinarian and I always told my employees, especially new ones, to eat a good breakfast AND if you start to feel "funny" to SIT DOWN immediately, don't even take 1 step because you won't make the second step and will fall on your face! Glad you weren't injured physically. Your pride will heal 😉 Thanks again for another great video!

    Don't be embarrased Ru! My first times observing surgery as a pre-vet student I passed out as well. Heck, sometimes I get lightheaded now while I'm the one performing the surgery. Gotta keep the AC turned low and wear breathable/cooling clothes on surgery days. Glad you weren't injured in your fall and that the heifer is recovering well.

    • @flankfarm
      @flankfarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks a bunch! Good to know that, and actually Jon the vet said something similar to me just after it happened… but I felt he was just being kind. I will say though, that’s one heck of a thing to witness in a barn!! Unbelievable how much happens, and how the heifer was still standing through it. Such an experience and thanks for sharing your story!

    Rufus, thanks for the video. Life has bright sides and down sides. Just like farming. At least the heifer is okay. You got out without obvious physical damage. The care your mother has for you makes for a good mother. The care she shows for her animals makes for a very good farmer. Let the one without shortcomings throw the first stone.
    Stay healthy and safe and look forward to updates from you, your mum and the farm.

    It's always the young tarts. We've had 6 c sections on the farm in my life time (37 years) none have been fun. 3 the calf had died 3 lived, 5 of them were young heifers around 18 months old 3 of them were brought at auction as 12 month olds the other two went through fences to get to the neighbors bull. 1 was a older cow with a upside down back the front calf that was massive and mum just wasn't dilated enough that was Christmas Eve 2021, we named the calf Eve and she is a gem like her mum, I can go out to the paddock when she's laying down and lay up against her often falling asleep.

    Nice to see another video. Too bad about the calf. C-sections were higher in our area this spring and that was with mature cows and heifers. Early maturity in the animals is great, but has it’s own challenges. And as for the shredded wheat, it is fine for breakfast (maybe a coffee or tea). I worked EMS (ambulance) and was fine with the emergency in field, but sometimes when I would get back to the hospital, those procedures would affect me. Sit down, head between knees. Looking forward to the next one. I’m sure you must have footage you can put together for some short videos. Hope the heat isn’t too hard on all.

    Refreshing to see that you really do show the good and the bad not just talk about it. Don’t be too hard on yourself. I’ve come close to fainting before. The more of it you see the easier it gets. I imagine that was a bit of a shock to the system for you. Keep the videos coming. All the best to C-cow, your mum and, well. All of you. Oliver
