    I didn't realize the pitot was heated the entire time the engines were running. I figured it was like anti-ice boots, or fluid - just used as needed. I also didn't know where the AOA measuring device was. I appreciate the info, Shaun!

      Every aircraft I worked on, the pitot heat had to be turned on. Maybe on some newer automated aircraft, but then those fancy systems tend to drive good aircraft into the ground.

    Cool! Really enjoy the nuts and bolts stuff on these airplanes along with the flying (of course). I learned that the derivation of pitot -- like aileron, fuselage, nacelle, empennage, etc., etc. -- is French. They had a lot going on in early aviation, apparently. Also learned that pitot is an eponym referencing its inventor, Henri Pitot. Ha! Thanks Shaun.

    Timely video particularly with the 737 Max issues. Did some regulatory work regarding ADS-B and related FAA initiatives. Had and interesting meeting before I retired with the regulatory authority. I wonder how much NextGen initiatives will make those probes a backup source. TCAS and Oceanic navigagion may end up being greatly improved as well. Finally, all the additional weather data aloft are already helping with weather models. All cool stuff. Glad to see the videos coming back! Congrats on your promotion.

    Nice one, when I go helo skiing the brief ensures we stay away from the pitos. But further thanks in explaining the other hanging red flags I see on early flights. Congrats; thanks for keeping it going.

    the cover on the pitot also keeps your head scar-free, as on some planes their low enough to run your head into, especially some GA aircraft. Been there done that ouch!!

    I do not want to annoy anyone but remember that the pitot tube measures dynamic pressure, which is not airspeed. under certain atmospheric conditions IAS, to be more accurate CAS will indeed read airspeed TAS (true airspeed). thanks for the quick explanation by the way, I wish I could be a real pilot. dreams of my dreams...

      Pitot pressure is air impact pressure plus static pressure, but it does not take into account air temp which will affect true airspeed indication.

      ​@@barrygrant2907 That is not true, dynamic pressure affected by density. density, (of the air) affected by:
      -temp
      -air pressure
      -and humidity
      for example: when it is hot and moist day at high elevation you will have to fly faster through air (TAS) to get the same dynamic pressure (IAS) due to the reduce density versus a cold dry day at low elevation.

      @@may4092 Didn't say that at all. "True" airspeed factors in temperature. "Indicated" airspeed, based on air pressures alone, does not use temperature.

    Also important to note: The right side usually has another set of pitot tube and static port. Some aircraft even have two on the left for redundancy.

    When you pointed out the pitot tube, you didn’t indicate where the drainage port is located. By the way you explained what happens when pitot tube ice over and air speeds remains where the blockage took place suggest the pitot drain must me actuated by a valve. On GA pitot tubes have a drainage port behind the pitot tube and when ram air is blocked airspeed will indicate zero.

    How would you clean out debris without damaging the sensors? Full disassembly?

      That is an adjustable setting to create the Vref window on the right side of the indicator. We usually leave it set to 1.3

    Does the angle of attack indicator sensor flutter in the wind!? Is seems to move so freely that any turbulence or crosswind would cause that thing to go haywire

      At low speeds it may bounce a little, but not much at all as long as we have some airspeed on it.

    When it comes to the altimeter, what part of the plane is at the altitude? Is the reading at the top of the plane, the bottom of the plane or center line of plane.

      The altimeter compares the outside pressure to the QNH you get from ATC. From 29.92 to 29.93 is several feet.
      Radio altimeters are usually located near the tail and are calibrated to match the main landing gear wheels, during the flare.

      There is actually a very small drain hole on the bottom of the pitot tube, but I didn't want to get into that on the video as it might get a little too technical. With that in mind, for the airspeed indicator to "act like an altimeter" both holes of the pitot would have to freeze over.

    Shaun,
    Do the instruments that monitor fuel economy rely on those probes, as well, or do they base it on some other things ?
    I would imagine your onboard computers do a decent job through your inputs from external information sent to you.
    Wouldn't the artificial horizon indicate angle of attack also?
    Pardon my ignorance, the last time I took flying lessons was in the early sixties.

      These probes actually send their data to the Digital Air Data Computer, which converts the information to a digital signal. It is then sent to many different instruments and computers for use. As for the artificial horizon, it will tell us the pitch of the plane compared to the actual horizon, but it does not know the relative wind direction, so it cannot give us Angle of Attack.

    Hey Shaun, does the Hawker have a redundant system like the GIV? And does it measure static air temperature or total air temperature (SAT/TAT)?

      There is a redundant AOA vane and pitot tube on the other side of the plane.
