    Thanks for being kind to it. If you're open to instruction, the tool you're using should be used mid-body, not at the neck or head.

      We put one inch by 2 inch wire around our Greenhouse I am wondering if we should also put up quarter inch wire as well at the bottom of the greenhouse. We had two snakes come for a visit.

      We are definitely open to instruction. So, will that harm the snake going around the neck? We always heard they should be secured there.

    • @RattlesnakeSolutions
      @RattlesnakeSolutions 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@ourselfreliantlife Great! Yes, it can injure or even kill the snake to grab it by the neck. It's a common practice so no doubt you're just following what others have instructed. They should be picked up mid-body, using just enough force to hold the snake in place. I train to use 2 hands - one to grip, one to lift, so that there is not a lever-force applied to the snake. If done correctly, the snake most often doesn't even struggle and it's safer for everyone involved.

    Our ten years of Sonora desert life taught us that rattle snake dens throw off a unique, identifiable odor - much like stale urine/dirty diapers and more noticeable in higher heat. Start 'looking' for that when out & about and see if you too can smell them!

    Rattlers will return to a place they like, over and over. Might be best to carefully clean and cook those you find near your place. As a kid ,living in New Mexico we ate several kinds of snakes both poisonous and not. You just need to know how to clean them and cook without getting venom on or in you. They have tasty meat and most are not endangered and can become invasive and numerous. Thanks for the video, I always love to see them. Much love and respect, blessings. 🐉🦂

    Hey Jim and Jess, good video but I don't share your catch-and-release, I got bitten in the leg when I was 16 years old in 1963. If it hadn't been for my dad and a few Mexican men that was working with us it probably would have killed me.
    I've never seen my dad so calm and focused then at that time. He took off his shirt and tied it around my uper leg and with a stick he made it real tight. Then he cut open my leg where the snake had bitten me and started sucking the blood out.
    I never lost consciousness but did feel tired and weak. We went to the Doctor and as he carried me in he said in a loud voice "snake bite" and everyone moved at once had me in a room with a needle in me so fast it didn't even hurt.
    That snake was just over 6 feet long and it all most killed me so my motto to this day is "the only good snake is a dead snake".

    • @artemisiagentileschi2400
      @artemisiagentileschi2400 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree. Relocating them takes the deadly problem somewhere else...NIMBY. They are predators, kill other creatures including children & adults taking a walk or camping. They aren't the only thing that Roadrunners, coyotes, king snakes eat, so it's safer to kill it rather than take a chance that one of its other predators will before it kills again and repopulates. Whether its humans or a predator that kill it, its all from the animal species...humans are part of the animal species too.

    I love snakes. Me and my friends used to snake hunt all the time back in school. I have come across a lot of copperheads on our homestead. When we first bought our homestead I was walking the untouched forest, (hehe overgrown untouched for probably 40-50 years.), I stopped and was just looking at everything. Looked down around my feet and to my surprise. A pygmy rattler less than 2 feet away curled up basking in the sun. A huge myth about all snakes is their aggressiveness. They will ALWAYS chose to run rather than attack. UNLESS, you step on them, startle them by stepping super close to them, or miss handle them. They will never chase you. (Except exotic breeds, Momba, and a handle full of African area breeds.) Love these videos guys. NPA in da HOUSE!!!

Just a little information, there are 6’ and a bit over western diamondbacks east of town. Another fact, I used to see a Gila monster at least 2’ long east of your place, towards the uphill area. I still have never witnessed a Gila monster that large. Be safe out there.

      Years ago when my son was about 10, we lived out in the middle of the desert and he had trapped this gila monster inside an old consul TV set. Somehow he had got this Gila monster inside the cabinet with its legs tangled up in the wiring and it was over 2 feet long and it was very thick and it was very beautiful. It was really mad hissing and carrying on as I tried to release him it and it took quite awhile.

Well anyone watching an offgrid, homesteading channel should realize a person works with and around nature on a daily basis and these kind of things are common and really a necessity to learn. I have never understood people who think they can live in a world disconnected from the natural world. Once we(humans) are all gone(due to dying of natural causes or otherwise) nature will prevail without us. LOL . :)

    I grew up in the Mojave desert in California. As teenagers we hunted Mojave greens for fun and had quite a collection of them in our home made snake pit.
    Looking back , we were stupid!!
    Make no mistake ,the Mojave green is very aggressive, they may not have been here with the folks shooting this video, but they are very aggressive and will stand their ground, more than any other rattle snake I’ve ever encountered, including diamondbacks, side winders, sand rattlers etc.

    Jim & Jessica, Awesome video! I appreciate the detailed information! I never knew about the Mojave Green until now. So, I have a quick question.... Was it rattling when you approached it? I encountered 2 rattlesnakes on a hike a few years back and neither of the snakes rattled when I approached them (and no, they were not sleeping)LOL!!!. I'm wondering if they are evolving and realizing that sometimes rattling may be to their advantage to not give their prey the early warning signal etc. hmmmm............Anyways, just curious about your circumstance. Its funny because I have the EXACT "snake grabber" or whatever you call it with the green handle hanging in my garage if I ever have another rattlesnake situation. We must do the same research because these looked the most "heavy duty"! Alright take care and look forward to your next video!

      Great question Chad! It did not rattle. They really only do it if they really feel threatened. When we were there it was trying to get away. It didn't do anything when we tried to pick it up. It only rattled when we got it in the container. Yes, the heavier duty grabber the better.😆

    I play with rattlesnakes. They are my friends. Good video. Thanks for doing the right thing. Please don't grab the snake by the neck with the tongs. The animal needs its' weight supported from the midsection. Otherwise death or injury might occur. Gentle Giant Tongs from Midwest Tongs have become the industry standard. The scissor-like tongs that you use are well known rib-breakers. A Snake hook works much better. Tongs should only be used as a last resort.

I live where I’ve only seen two types of rattlesnakes, the little sidewinder and Mojave but with these two, I’ve never seen one who chased anybody or even stood ground. Your info is pretty much what I learned from the AZFG. I would go further by saying, the best way to handle a rattlesnake of any kind is to stop ✋ and let it retreat or redirect your route.

    Good NPA guys. That would give me the creeps handling a snake with any size pole grabber. We ran into a Western Diamond Back while on a week long hike in Eastern Washington. it was the only one that we saw and it wanted nothing to do with us.

    Since getting rabbits, every TX rattle snake I've spotted has been by the rabbits. Last summer went to feed rabbits in the colony building and heard the rattles. It was hidden behind the rabbits nest boxes, which had to be pulled out for me to find the snake. Rattle snakes love rabbit, so I had to kill it. Building is on a solid sheet of rock, so a shotgun was not an option. I used the hoe I keep nearby for cleaning the rabbit poop up. That was a very scary situation. Feared for me safety and the rabbits safety.

    • @ourselfreliantlife
      @ourselfreliantlife  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, absolutely. In that situation you don't want to take chances. Glad you were able to dispatch it safely.

    If you don't want snakes, don't feed them, I tell people. Remove their feed and shelter. I set out a mouse bait once a year that does the trick. Black Cat is a good one you can get at Lowe/Home Depot. The bait, not the trap. I use moth balls and a sprinkling of diatomaceous earth under the trailer to kill bugs, and keep it dry under there to discourage frogs. I also recommend permanent structures have a border of sharp gravel and/or broken glass. You can also plant geraniums as a repelling border and clover. Great info here guys. You would not think about snake trouble here in Florida but we now have all kinds due to "pet" releases.

    • @ourselfreliantlife
      @ourselfreliantlife  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yeah, I bet. It seems the warm moist climate of Florida would be ripe for all kinds of animals. I didn't know pet release was such a big problem.
      Thanks for the info Carol!🙏

    You don’t want to secure it close to the head, you can break it’s neck. Grab it on the top third of the body. Better not to mess with it if you don’t know how to handle. Also shorter length tongs make it easier to lift and manage the snake. Good luck to you

    Where did you find your snake catcher? Great video snakes in our area are coming out in droves. After almost two years living in our desert we have seen four snakes on our property. Our neighbor behind us has a lot of snakes that love to warm themselves by his front door and the back patio area.

    I used to be the snake rangler at a paintball park in surprise AZ and I've seen some whoppers!

    Indiana JIM and the Temple of Snakes ! Good eating them rattlers . Make nice chili . I have one more thing to say snakes and most creatures on the ground don t like wood ash . Ya the stones have to go and building a snake habitat from the stones away from the trailer is a good idea. Skirt that Trailer . There s and old saying if you run a chain saw you are going get to cut . If you handle snakes you are going to get bitten . Have a snake venom first aid kit handy cause you are going to be using it . Much love and respect from Howie the road runner that lived in the Sonoran for 5 years .

    One of your "myths" is wrong. Sorry but I have to correct it. I have been chased by a Mojave Green Rattlesnake...not once but TWICE. First time was about 20 years ago while living in Golden Valley Az. I was raising wolves (98 %) and one day when I was out walking with two of the 3 month old cubs I had both cubs stopped to inspect something. Yeah it was a Mojave Green. I got the cubs to follow me away from the snake but it started after us. I had to continue keeping the cubs from going back to it so I started to jog home (which was almost a mile away). That darned snake kept coming after us even at a jog all the way to my house. I got the cubs inside and when I went out to see if it was still around or hopefully went away It found me and almost bit me. I got a shovel and tried to "shovel" it away but it kept coming at me. Hated killing an animal but it had to die. It did become a meal for a Road Runner that saw me pitch the two pieces of the cut up snake to the road. My husband got a pic of the snake before I tried to get away from him...it's a got pic. Now...20 years later and in a different area of Golden Valley AZ our cat alerted me to a Mojave Green that was on our nice cool patio. I scooted him out of our 2 1/2 acre property (again using a shovel which he bit many times) out to the cool evening and nice open spaces of the desert and mountains of Golden Valley. When I tried to get away from him he came after me twice and my shovel continued taking his bites (and the hits were actually alarmingly loud hits). Again I had to kill a snake (which the two pieces were gone in the morning apparently by our great abundance of Road Runners). I have chased out Diamond Backs (with brooms) and never had a worry of them chasing me but Mojave Greens ARE AGGRESSIVE AND MEANER THAN SHIT. So your myth is NOT a myth.
