    5:44 They're different, because Arkansas' name's origin is French while Kansas' name comes from english. (So Arkansas is pronounced the French way and Kansas the English way)

    Very impressed by your ability to remember your mistakes and correct them all in the next game. I wish I could do this as quickly in geoguessr.
    As far as why Kansas is pronounced so differently than Arkansas - well, as you might expect, it's a little confusing. The word "Kansas" is an english plural of the name of a Sioux tribe of the region called "Kansa". The word "Arkansas" came from a different Sioux tribe which was called "Akansa" by the Algonquin tribe (it had other names as well but "Akansa" stuck). "Akansa" turned into "Arkansas", but the modern pronunciation of "AR-kan-saw" apparently wasn't fully accepted until it was ruled to be the official pronunciation over the alternate "Ar-KAN-zis" by the state legislature in the late 19th century. So there you go. Semi-useless information, but kinda interesting.

      and the S at the end of Arkansas is silent because that spelling is from French - it was part of the Louisiana Purchase. of course, Kansas was also part of the Louisiana Purchase, but that's just to make it confusing all over again lmao
      though through double checking this, I was surprised to see Illinois wasn't part of the Louisiana Purchase, I made an assumption based on the name and didn't realise the actual purchase was all west of the Mississippi

    • @MrSharkFIN
      @MrSharkFIN 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe Arkansas was named after the French word for the tribe, and then an 's' was added to the end to make it plural and in French the 's' in plurals is silent.

    Tip for Arizona and New Mexico: Most people can find California, so if you go east from there, the first letter of the states spell C-A-N-T. California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas.
    Vermont is shaped like a V, and the other one is New Hampshire.
    Mississippi, Alabama and George = MAG. I'm not going to get into politics but you can see the reference there.
    Iowa, Illinois, Indiana border each other from west to east. Three of the letter I. Then another vowel, O for Ohio. IIIO.
    Going north to south: Washington, Oregon and Nevada = WON (I'm excluding California because most people know that one.)

    Rhode Island is called that because it was an anglicized version of the Dutch words for “Red Island” or because of an Italian explorer who named it after Rhodes, and then when the British founded the colony of Providence, the name was changed to Providence Plantations. After becoming a state, it was called the “State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations”, but the Providence Plantations was removed in 2020 because of the word Plantations having connections to slavery.
    To make things more confusing, there is an island that is part of Rhode Island that is called “Rhode Island”, although it is usually referred to as “Aquidneck Island” so it isn’t confused with the name of the state.

    The best way not to mess up Mississippi and Alabama (which I also used to mix up) is that its western border is the Mississippi River, which you can see snaking north in the borders throughout most of the country (Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Illinois).

      @@GeoPeter And the Mississippi River starts in Minnesota, which starts with the letter M. The Missouri river starts in Montana, another M state, and ends in Missouri (where it joins the Mississippi River).

    Learning the US states was my gateway into geography. Next I learned the US capitals, then all the countries, then all the capitals, then all the flags, then the UK counties and capitals, then the states of a few other countries. I don't think it's possible to learn the states of all the countries in the world, but it would be so cool to know them all!

    • @Kevin-rf5zh
      @Kevin-rf5zh 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      After "slov" come the letters A and E. A is first in the alphabet and Slovakia is further north than Slovenia. Latvia and Lithuania: the second letter of each is A and I, and A comes before I in the alphabet.
