- In some cases, infants might choke on foreign objects like food or small toys. It is important for the emergency responder to know what to do to clear the infant's airway.
1) Recognise signs by accessing airway. Some signs include loss of voice, increase breathing difficulty, and the infant's face turns blue.
2) Support the infant by using the sandwich maneuver
3) Support the head of the infant with your palm, and back of the infant's body on your forearm
4) Sandwich the infant with your other hand by supporting the infant's jaw with your thumb on one side, and the rest of your fingers on the other side
5) Place your forearm on the infant's chest
6) Straddle the infant faced down, with the head lower than the body
7) Use your knee as a support
8) Use the heel of your free hand to deliver 5 back blows between the infant's shoulder blades
9) Turn the infant from the back blow position
10) Draw an imaginary line between the nipples with your ring finger
11) At the sternum, place your middle and index fingers next to your ring finger
12) Lift up your ring finger and deliver 5 chest thrusts over the lower half of the sternum using the same location and technique as chest compressions in CPR
13) If a foreign body is seen, remove the foreign body with your middle finger
14) Repeat the back blow and chest thrust technique until the foreign body is expelled or the infant becomes unconscious
