Excellent Doctor Who reference! Personally, I’m a JKS Shotokan Sandan, but I also have a background in traditional Jiu-Jitsu. I haven’t been looking much into other styles of karate but for some reason I stumbled onto your videos and I’m liking them a lot. Thank You, TH-cam algorithms. It seems as Goju-Ryu has more of the techniques we were practicing back in the day in my old Jiu-Jitsu dojo. Also, the concept of Randori was very present. There will be plenty more Goju-Ryu in my TH-cam flow from now on. Very inspiring

I am endlessly delighted when my background references are noticed and enjoyed!
Goju Ryu shares its roots with Jiu-jitsu (some practitioners consider what they are doing more like karate-jutsu) and we are lucky to have such clear lineage and access to proper Okinawan roots and instructors.
Thank you so much for this truly lovely comment, and we hope to hear from you again!

Karate is the diligent practice of developing good habits that over time become natural ways of working. This drill set is very much in line with that mindset. Nice job. Scott S from Seattle Wa.

More great praxis from the GRKC team! Thankyou all! Love the way you link tai sabaki progressions to kata applications... given me lots of ideas for teaching my kiddles. And obviously they do kata in heaven 'cause apparently angels know musubi dachi! GRKC is a one-of-a-kind and my fave channel. Kudos, sirs and madam!

Ah, our dear friends on the other side of the planet!
Indeed, many of these exercises are totally suitable for kids, and getting them to learn tai sabaki is perhaps one of the best defences in the world.
We are honoured to be your fave channel, and to have you as one of our members too, truly.

Another great video by Sensei Che with very classical Gojuryu drills. When Sensei Che slowly executed a hiki-uke counter grab he grabbed the wrists at the start of the video, but when he did it quickly at 2:52 he instinctively went for the forearm closer to the elbow - yes, one aims for the elbow or even the upper arm - it's quite hard to catch the incoming punch at the wrist, but far easier the intercept and catch at the elbow as the arm is retracting. In fact, in the time that I took to write this, Sensei Che already talked about going for the elbow and the shoulder/source, 9:45 onwards. I think the key is after the parry, regardless of the outcome, one should close in, hence the footwork and upper body movements are initiated almost simultaneously with the party. By 18:30 onwards Sensei Che was doing all these. By 19:06 he's moved closer to the opponent while blocking...30-50 seconds later even closer....lol, showing the real Goju-Ryu close-quarter tradition. Btw We did a variation of this drill in which the puncher shuffles forward as he continuously punches while the blocker keeps blocking....my sensei used to tie us together by a strip of belt, and as the drill progressed the belt got shorter.....the blocker can't back away, he can only move left or right....
As for close-quarter front leg kicks, Goju-Ryu has a rising crescent kick, whereby the main power is generated by the lifting of the thighs (hence hojo undo with the geta) almost like a knee strike, but instead of striking with the knee, one contacts with the ball of the foot (or big toe, if that's been conditioned), by extending the foot a little. Hence the moment of impact occurs as the thigh is rising instead of when one is extending the lower leg. But it's a lower kick to below the belt, hard to block but disallowed in most tournaments, but it's a kick that is usable within punching distance, a little to far for a knee strike, a little too close for a full-throated leg-extending maegeri. In fact if one watches Morio Higaonna's kakie videos I'm sure one would catch him doing this kick.....I've found it to be extremely effective in randori/irikumi.

There was great delight in our household when your notification popped up on our phones - Ché was convinced he had done something wrong, for one of our very best commentators hadn't said anything in weeks. We are so glad you are back!
Indeed, you can't have real Goju Ryu without randori, and the rising crescent kick is a delightful weapon indeed. I have seen Ché stand nose to nose with someone and still kick them in the head, and it must have been this kick. (I was a naïve brown belt back then and it was during a 24 hour gashuku, such exhaustion).
You're right - Ché tries to teach the basics, but when he's doing things automatically, he does them at a higher grade. I didn't even notice the things you mentioned in my hours of editing!
We're going to give randori a bit of a break for now, but we hope to get to more advanced material soon. Welcome back, good sir :)

@@GojuRyuKarateCentre Sensei Che and Sensei Zoe, you give me too much credit.....I have been busy traveling due to work the last few weeks...and I didn't want to write a meaningless comment so I'm saving those videos till I have the time to watch them in-depth and think about them. Meanwhile please keep the videos coming, they are still the ones I'd watch first thing on Saturday mornings.
