I thought the movie Titanic was about a ship that hit an iceberg but I didn't realize I was supposed to care about the cardboard cutouts called "passengers" aboard the ship. Wow, it really changes the whole thing... no, it doesn't. "Ha, that guy hit the prop." And there goes my empathy... Cool ship though. Up to a point... Over 1200 hundred people died so I could make that joke.... and so James Cameron could make millions. But who's conscience is cleaner?
At the same time as the Titanic, an identical ship called the Olympus was built. The Olympus never hit and iceberg and never sank. It was a pretty cool ship. The Titanic wasn't even the greatest maritime tragedy in numbers of lives lost, even excluding naval warfare. The only reason it is remembered is because half of that day's celebrities were on it.
I'd argue the Titanic itself is the hero, titular character in all. Does all the work including a set-up to kill a bunch of snobs in the middle of the ocean. Sadly it is a flawed protagonist, as it is unable to kill those it hates and in causing the death of many innocent people, commits suicide

An alien cinema about the only movie I have an ongoing and irrational game made out of having had practically zero exposure to the contents of this movie outside of image stills, Celine Dion’s voice, and the unavoidable 1-3sec of a clip I encountered in the wild then promptly pulled a “₍₍ ᕕ༼.◕ヮ◕.༽ᕗ⁾⁾ - とんずらこいて!” It’s bizarrely satisfying to entirely avoid a movie solely due to the difficulty level of avoiding its cult of personality, I only keep it up cause we all know what happened and I’d probably never have liked the story part of the movie regardless... So it’s like dedicating your life to never eating kale and hating the taste of it.
@hplexicon - That is a fabulously reasonable, expected, and sane question - to which its somewhat anticlimactic response is: “Cause its an irrational whim,” I wish I hated Leo DiCaprio or had some other tangible specific thing to irrational have disdain for in order to become the catalyst for this childishly preposterous “the floor is lava” kinda avoidance of the movie, but I really don’t other than it’s promotional materials before it screened to be mocked by many and there was the common cliques of “This will be dumb I’m not gonna watch it” as a vocal minority that became sorta pop culture light hearted jabs at a movie that ended up doing pretty damn good in the box offices; for years it seemed actually highly improbable to go without seeing any quantitative portion of the movie titanic with as wide spread its popularity and mockery was... About 6 years ago, I thought I was gonna come close to being unable to avoid seeing some of it after some temporary resurgence of it being popular to mock, which only added petrol to the childish whim fire that has made up all of this folly.
