Les, this is Frederic Martin from Dallas, TX. I've seen your comments in many videos and agree with all you say. I want to alert you: in this country, in the 1960s, the Sapulpa, Oklahoma junior high band conducted by Eastman & Michigan grad Marjorie Skinner was superb. I have recordings of Doc Severinsen appearing with them and he raved about their excellence.
Thank you for the comment. These children are 10-12 years old. After school, the practice time is about eight hours during the week. At this point, it was periods of two years and three(age12)-three months(age10). I was a trumpet lecturer of this band.
for an elementary school band, this is just outstanding. I played in my elementary school band, but like most elementary school bands, we were horrible. This is actaully quite good.
Wowee!!! The only American elementary school band I ever heard that could equal this was in the 1960s, the Sapulpa, Oklahoma junior high band conducted by Eastman & Michigan grad Marjorie Skinner. I have recordings of Doc Severinsen appearing with them and he raved about their excellence. These Japanese kids are marvelous!! Commenter Allan Birmantas below asks, "Is Japan a nation of virtuosos??" I would say "Yes, it sure looks that way, and I'm very glad of it! I wish our American music education system could measure up to the Japanese. "
AMAZING !!! I couldn't believe it when I saw it. Wonderfull orchestra. Thoses kids play so good. I can only dream that, one day, in France, my pupils will do the same
OMG! I have now chicken skin while listening this gorgeous performance! And I see and listen these little girls and boys and I can imagine the hard work before this concert! OMG! Congratulations!
These children are amazing ,,,, I was in a grade school band that won our division back in 1951, and we could not compare to this one. Is Japan a nation of virtuosos?
Allan Birmantas Thank you for comment. We are never virtuosos. These children are ordinary elementary school children. But they understand only one., they became one player if go to the stage with a musical instrument. As for the criticism and the praise on the stage, an adult and a child are equal. I made a severe demand to them but they did not give it up by the exercise on the way. Thank you hear this performance. We were invited this year from ABA(American Bandmasters Association). This is ABA-JBA Joint Convention 2016. Very honored. However, visit to the United States permission from administration did not. I am discouraged very much.
at 4:32 I threw out a big involuntary "Awwww...." when I saw the gong girl doing her thing. Too cute. Everyone did an excellent job on this piece. Absolutely wonderful. Those young kids can only get better from this point forward.
Thank you for the question. But it is impossible to write in this space because there are a lot of answers. If I answer by one ..... The breath training has been done enough before plays a musical instrument. (including percussion and strings)
Wow! I had lower expectations for this video. That's truly amazing. Outstanding job! Notice the bari sax player...the bari sax is bigger than her. LOL ;)
There's definitely either a soprano sax, or clarinet, or both (and yeah i saw the soprano sax) who did an awesome job. As well as a trumpet player who stood out
asian culture doesn't beat their children to death. They were raised in a civilization and culture where there's a lot of respect for one another and it's all about pleasing other people and not disappointing others.
Thank you for the comment. This school is a usual public primary school. Students have not received a special musical training. So, new students(age10) hardly difficult understands music score. However, differ from other schools is students have an original practice method with an excellent conductor.I think .
I'm an America educator, and I work with these students. None of them are beat, or forced to do anything. Their friends recruit them to join their volunteer clubs like band and tutor and encourage them to do their best. This band is an exceptional one, there are many mediocre ensembles as well. But they all have fun, which is why they stick with it. Where do you get your information, Elaina?
holy....all i wish for my beginner students to accomplish is to be able to play mary had a little lamb perfectly lol... these elementary kids can b both inspiring or extremely discouraging to some~~ although i'd like to think of it as inspiring..... Thx for uploading this and keep up the great work
Thank you for the comment. Japanese people differ in a custom or thinking from Chinese people or South Koreans. The Japanese schoolchild has received uniform education traditionally. There may be the secret of the performance into which children were unified. Is the United States the educational method which respected children's individuality? If it is a fact, that many great artists are born from the United States I understand.
Of course. It is impossible that the grade-schooler performs more than the high school student. However, a sincere mind to music is our boast. As for this performance, I want you to listen by your mind. Our performance is not a challenge to the junior high school student and the high school student.
I'm a Kyoto Tachibana Fan, I know what you're talking about. There are so many other high schools such as Takefu, Seiko, Osaka Toin, Herz....Top notch bands I can watch all day!
@ilbhbahng: Don't feel bad!! :( Everyone starts off somewhere. Our orchestra teacher always compares us to better groups in our state and it makes us feel terrible. xD But don't give up! Continue to practice hard and follow good teachers! :)
It may have felt that way, but I'll repost the comment from above: I am sure your director was trying to inspire you: to show you what is possible with concentrated passion and effort. That's all. It seems we in America like to do many things, but very few with passion and focus.

Thank you for the comment.

この年の小山杯を最後に、この吹奏楽部が廃部されたのが実に惜しいです(顧問の先生の異動で廃部になりました)
There are no words to describe this level of performance at this age. Thank you!!
Amazing, the quality of sound that these young musicians produce. Wow. Such musical control at all audio levels. I am completely blown away.
I'm thankful for your value.
There are a lot of reasons.
One answer is,
The leader never gives up on the way.
Congratulations Japan, the whole world worship you because you bring the best music and musicians in the world :) (oh.. and Anime too!)

WOW!!!!!!!!!!
incredible, i wonder what ages they are.
Has the understanding of the use of the voluntary and involuntary muscles been addressed before or in conjuction with the breath training.
Use of the mute is an instruction of the composer.
We did not select it.
@FunnyLemurLips
i believe the real message is 'if you practice 1 piece for like a bagillion weeks, it comes out like this.'

ha. my band teacher did the exact same thing.
#4 is "This Is The Hour!"
No, that's a soprano saxaphone which is not commonly played in a lot of bands.
I am sure your director was trying to inspire you: to show you what is possible with concentrated passion and effort. That's all. It seems we in America like to do many things, but very few with passion and focus.
Merci.
Je dis votre commentaire aux enfants.
I'd like to see any little kid in America that could play like that
