I'm always so shocked when I see/hear Squid Game with an English dub. it kinda jumpscares me lol 😂 on a more serious note, I really appreciated your mental health breakdown because if any series is laden with big-time trauma, it's Squid Game.
as a trans man i was so excited to see a trans woman in the 2nd season, very relevant in terms of social commentary with the financial barriers to transition and social barriers to pretty much everything else. i also personally found her one of the best written and most interesting trans characters in media that i've seen, showing how she is capable and caring with flaws and weaknesses. i was also a big fan of how the characters around her's dynamics were written, especially young mi and the older woman
I love (or love to hate) all of Squid Games' characters, but she is my hands-down favourite across the two seasons. She was so fucking cool and competent and emotionally layered. The type of character, I'd totally want to be friends with if she existed IRL.
She is my favorite too. Can I ask you something? The character is made by a Cis man. Do you think they should have searched for a trans woman for the job?
@@alinnetorressoares8483 They did. You can google it but the effective answer is that there were close to no openly trans actors willing to put themselves in the spotlight for this in South Korea.
@@alinnetorressoares8483 Based on the research I've done, they did try to find a trans actor to act. But unfortunately/realistically, in a country like Korea where the population of openly trans *actors* is **very** small, if almost non-existant, it didn't pan out. That's not even taking into account, if the actor they could find, was realistically good enough for a big show like Squid Game. Loved her character though, and I do think it's good representation, and a leap forward for a country like Korea. And hopefully it inspires other trans people, for the future.
I’m autistic with a squid game hyperfixation, and seeing a real doctor react to the injuries/medical scenes are just awesome sauce and makes me joyfull :D
I’m not sure about the situation in South Korea, I know they have mandatory military conscription; but I definitely saw the parallels for the US with the soldiers being young. In the United States one of the “best” ways for kids from poor families to get health care and higher education without accruing insane debt is to join the military. Here, like in the show, having desperate kids kill people to get through the broken system.
this video is exactly what I wanted to hear people talk about this season, the psychology behind everything. it is so fascinating, definitely hoping you make another video for season 3!
Ooh your analysis of the Mingling game makes me think that the organizers/The Frontman chose that game as a way to force Gi-Hun to make those sacrificial choices. Then we see him make that choice outside of the game later on, much to the Frontman’s delight.
for me, the two highlights of this season were every scene with the recruiter, and towards the end, the little smirk on 001's face as he realizes he's won when Gi-hun chooses to sacrifice his own teammates for the 'greater good' just like 001 has been arguing is why the Game is necessary. I was really worried this season was just going to be a cash grab of just doing the same things from season 1 over and over. While there is some of that (the secret antagonist playing the game with them, ect), this season was a lot better than I thought it was going to be.
I’d love if you did a commentary on the HBO show Succession. It’s such a good portrayal of a dysfunctional family and the long term effects of physiological abuse
20:00 This scene reminds me of a scene in the movie Serenity. "Do you know what the definition of a hero is? It's someone who gets other people killed."
One thing that I kept going back to whenever the game operators kept harking on free choice to participate or not - it's not a free choice if it's not informed consent. Naturally, none of them were warned of the very real stakes they'd be locking themselves into by choosing to participate, therefor their choice cannot be viewed or accepted as a totally free, conscious choice.
Really enjoyed watching your analysis/ thoughts, thank you 😊. Would love to see you do an episode by episode video series because there's so much to explore ...... but yes, please please react to season 3? I feel like the Gi Hun we got this season is going to be very very different after that ending
I remember a series of articles and podcasts a few years ago discrediting the Stanford Prison Experiment, that the participants were intentionally playing up their extremism for the sake of results, other fraud and methodological problems, etc. Is it largely seen as still valid among psychiatrists?
No, it’s likely not seen as valid among psychiatrists and psychologists today, mainly due to the significant ethical issues, methodological flaws, and concerns about the authenticity of the data. The experiment’s findings have been widely criticized, and it is often cited as an example of how not to conduct research in terms of both ethics and scientific rigor. Many consider the conclusions drawn from it to be less reliable due to these concerns. However - it did offer some insight into human behavior, which then likely was tested by other researchers in other experiments. This gives credibility to the conclusions of the study (if proven to be true by other researchers) even if the study itself wasn’t reliable. I should note that I don’t know for sure wether the insights were proven or disproven, or if they hold up today. We have even more insight into systemic issues that plagues research. Just because it once was seen as reliable data doesn’t it mean it still is. On top of that - I don’t know how “new” the insights from this experiment were at the time, or if similar ideas already existed. I guess my point is that bad research doesn’t necessarily mean lack of insights - but it’s highly likely to be unreliable insights, which kind of makes the insights a bit meaningless if you can’t test these insights during more reliable circumstances.
Yeah, turns out Zimbardo wasn't getting the results he wanted so he told the "guards" to go more extreme. It's part of the reason why psychologist Christina Maslach confronted him and told him to shut it down. It wasn't just how brutal the "guards" were being - it was that he was the one egging them on to "prove" his pre-forgone conclusion. It was only a few years ago that this started coming out though, so it may not have made the rounds everywhere. It's still interesting though. It ended up reinforcing the Milligram experiment, in that all it took was an authority figure to say "We'll take responsibility" for them to amp up their harm to the "prisoners". It was actually worse this time though since it wasn't an actor fake-screaming in pain at a fake electrical shock. This time they were actually harming them face-to-face. But even if it was Zimbardo egging them on, the guards still went along with it and the prisoners still ended up capitulating to their increasing brutality, despite their ability to walk away at any time. It didn't prove that authority causes brutality, but it did capture a snapshot of how people react to it.
Social psychology researcher here! Like the lobotomy haunts psychiatry, the standard prison experiment (SPE) haunts social psychology. The so-called “experiment” has so many methodological issues (on top of the ethical issues), that we don’t talk about it as legitimate research. In fact, there has been a recent push to phase it out of the introductory psychology curriculum because giving the SPE attention encourages students to draw claims from “bad science.” We instead focus on Milligram’s studies, because while ethically questionable, they are at least “good science.”
In the red light green light scene - the first thing I noticed about the music: the intro is not dissimilar to the actor playing Thanos' (purple hair with the crucifix) first single solo release when he was a KPop rapper in Big Bang - and his background is not unlike this particular character's (though it was for marijuana usage in SK). The 'heys' are not in the same timing and whatnot, but it was close enough that I did a double take! (Song is Turn it Up by T.O.P). It obviously completely splits off after that, but I can't help to think they chose that particular song with his intro there intentionally. Also, his English dub does not do him justice. The guy has a great voice. Doesn't have much at all to do with the psychology of the characters, I know - but it definitely played a little with my head in the audience! :)
I completely understand the reasoning behind the dubbing, which I’m grateful for (despite not needing it myself). It took my a bit to realize in the last episode that one of the characters was likely having a PTSD episode 😅 My sister and I definitely had a conversation or two about how the manipulation in this show is top tier. They’ve been doing it for AGES (as seen in the first season), so they have it down to a science. Also my sister and I were wondering how the other shoe was going to drop at the end of the season considering the fact that player you noticed being the “big bad” or however you wanna call him. I definitely thought it was interesting that they had a trans character in the show, considering that I’m trans as well and seeing how she was treated was really interesting to watch throughout the season. The scene where they’re going through the light from the blue to the red kinda shows how that mental shift kinda happens (kinda? almost?) One of the guards (number 11 if I’m remembering correctly) has a specific reason for going back as seen in the season but I don’t want to do too many spoilers 😅 And you are correct, Miss Piggy would NEVER. Love the hair by the way
You should take a look at Season 1 of For All Mankind, there’s a lot of mental health related themes surrounding the crew of a lunar base stranded for several months after the Saturn V is grounded.
That was really good, it's just a shame you didn't have the time to unpack more scenes in more detail, there was so much gold there... For me, one of the most interesting things this season was including one of the soldiers (triangles) in the main characters, and her backstory.
Commenting to say please don't listen to the people complaining about the dub! I love *listening* to your videos, people that don't use the dub are impossible to just listen to and it's very annoying!
I mean you might be a self-proclaimed left-wing “woke” psychiatrist, but it’s just so mind boggling to me how something as simple as “people shouldn’t have to live in poverty” is becoming a political stance. I mean… what does that say about where us humans are headed?
I have your general philosophy but also some people are just bad. Not everyone is a victim. People make malicious bad choices. There are good people in the games who shouldn’t be there (and want to leave) and many bad people who choose greed over life. Empathy is good but too much blinds you
I'm always so shocked when I see/hear Squid Game with an English dub. it kinda jumpscares me lol 😂

I hope he at least watched it in the original language but is doing the dub for the YT video for convenience sakes

And then at least 3 characters who are ex-military who have been discarded by society to the point that they end up taking part in the games

Out of admiration for you, I’m going to assume you watched subbed not dubbed and the clips being in English is for our sake.
Yes but dubbed needed here to make it as accessible as possible on TH-cam
@ yes! I knew it, you’re the best. Thanks for thinking of the dyslexics and illiterate viewers.
I'd love to hear your reaction to Yellowjackets ! lots of things to say about trauma & ptsd
I’d love if you did a commentary on the HBO show Succession.

I save somuch time with you doing analysis of binge stuff 😂
I do really really hope you go through the whole season, episode by episode. It gives as much to dive deep into as season 1!
That wasn't 'calming music', that was the song Time To Say Goodbye. It's very commonly heard at funerals...
Really enjoyed watching your analysis/ thoughts, thank you 😊. 12:10 i genuinely just went over this for revision yesterday :0 thx for the recap

There is also evidence that the guards and prisoners were chosen based on personality, not randomized, which inherently invalidates the premise.

Have you thought about doing a breakdown of Inside Out 2? I think it does a great job portraying anxiety.
Doctor Elliott; you look great!!
Bit of an odd suggestion, but I think you may like the music videos for Hide by Rainbow Kitten Surprise and Buscabulla by Métele

watching dub ohhh nooo anyone doing that should be in Squid Game no huge debt required 😂

Why does this make me think of Mr. Beast?
Who elses fault they ended to be poor of course its their own actions 😂 not blaming stating facts 😂
Noooo not the dubbb... you should watch in the original language.. 😂🥲
I did. Dubbed needed for TH-cam to make it as accessible as possible for people.
@ oooh alr ! I get that, it’s just that this dubb is sooo horribly done haha i can’t physically watch it 🥲🤣
