Open air bargaining markets were also popular in eastern Europe e.g. Ukraine, Lithuania, etc. Big business and big fun! There was a famous open air market in Chicago called the Maxwell Street Market in the Ashkenazi Jewish immigrant neighborhood where my immigrant grandparents lived. "Come in. Come in. See what we have for you. Make us an offer. No wrong price! Wait, wait! That's not my last price! Come back! OK. Let's talk. I'll make you a special deal. Ok, I'll buy it. Yes, you're going to love this! It suits you beautifully!"
This is how my great grandmother made enough money to buy ship fare to send her sons to America and to take her little girls to America to get the hell out of Lithuania away from the Russian Army miltary conscription in the early 1900s! USA didn't want us either. "Too bad guys. Anachnu PO! Kadima! Am Yisrael Chai!" But it takes time to adjust, though. A LOT of time.
Same spirit, different language. Let's make a deal. Work it it. Solve the problem with creativity. Am Yisrael Chai! Tikkun Olam!
