- The WDR BIG BAND plays the Wayne Shorter - title "Lester Left Town", arranged by Michael Philipp Mossman. Solos are played by Shannon Barnett on trombone, Ruud Breuls on trumpet and Frank Chastenier on piano. recorded during the WDR BIG BAND rehearsal at WDR Studio 4 / Cologne (2016).
For the WDR Big Band concert "Wayne Shorter Stories", American trumpeter, arranger and bandleader Michael P. Mossman has made a varied song selection that is meant to be representative of Wayne Shorter's large œuvre.

This guy's the real deal. We were at Oberlin together back in the late 70's, and both played in the Oberlin Big Band, but I didn't know then that he could write like THIS!

Again and again (altho' not every time!), these quite superb musicians produce wonderful listenable jazz, here with excellent interesting worthwhile harmonies through a clever arranger. Continue all of you with your great music,please.

Wow, that bone player is realllllly good!
Gives Rita Payés a run for her money along female trombonists. Uses the whole horn, and has great ideas she develops well. Wonderful changes in dynamics and colors. I want to hear more from her.

Hi itegil! She left the band already 3 years ago, in order to follow her solo carreer. She is really a great bone player and we are convinced about playing with her again sometimes.

.... trotz vertrackter Rhythmik und was-geht-noch-spielbarer im Arrangement, ist qualitativ alles wie (immer) aus einem Guss. Vor allem auch, dass was Frau Barnett - locker-mal-so in einer Probe vorträgt ist erschreckend dermaßen gekonnt und innovativ, dass der staunenden Zuhörer - wie ich - sich fragt: WO ist da noch eine hörbare Steigerung möglich und wie viele hart erarbeitete Musikerleben (a la Zeitschleife: täglich grüßt das Murmeltier) braucht es, um nur annähernd hier an das grenzwertig spielbare eines WDR-Bassposaunisten - über das reine Können und Beherrschen des meisterlich in Form gebogenen Blech-Materials und Eignung am Spielgerät, bei verinnerlichter Spieltechnik hinaus - im entferntesten zu erlangen ...
Mike, it is SO great to see you writing for and leading this band! I've been loving the arrangements of yours that have shown up on the WDR Big Band TH-cam feed. Were you already writing charts back at Oberlin? If you were, it didn't make my radar screen. Maybe we took Wendall Logan's Jazz arranging course at the same time? It's been too long, and I just don't remember anymore.

Are there recordings available for this or anything else from the Wayne Shorter Stories other than these TH-cam videos? I find myself coming back to these videos over and over again because I love these arrangements.

Totally destroys the concept of the song. It is a tribute to -Lester Young. To each their own. Just IMO
