Kurt used 10-52 gauge strings. You are correct in that there is actually no need to cut the notches any bigger on the nut. I have 11-52's and they fit just fine.
i just use a bolt the same size but shorter no need for washers. just screws right in... did my two jagstangs this way..also don't need to mess around with the springs...
Thanks finally got my mustang for Xmas same exact color and model you have. Did not come with whammy bar and I don't use tremolo this is my 3rd mustang and always would go out of tune and out of all my guitars my KB stang holds in tune better then the others. Geronimo!
Im gonna get a cheaper Squier mustang and mod the hell out of it.. I found a really good looking bridge for it too with the same radius only problem is the anchors are 1mm thinner so that is a problem I will have to figure out, But yeah this really helped as I will be locking the trem as well.. Thanks!. Interesting how the ajustomatic bridge posts are screwed into the wood like a standard Tune o matic as opposed to the modern style with anchors... Useful discovery :).
I don't get why people don't like the vibrato's but if you were going to do this instead of prying the end of the spring with a flathead you should use needle nosed pliers on the other end of the spring and simply pull the spring until you can unhook it from the little notch that holds it. Also looked like you used washers with a rubber in them, i would strong advise against because the rubber will slowly flatten out and deteriorate from string tension and general movement not to mention the rubber effecting the way the sound reverberates around the bridge and body. like hitting a snare drum with a towel over the top.
In another video I watched on this mod the guy said that flipping the cigar tube could affect the break angle of the strings at the bridge which could effect the setup and such of the whole guitar. Have you noticed any issues after doing this? I really want to because I'm used to strats.
Thanks for this. I got a KC Fender Mustang and trying to remove the Vibrato plate unit. After the 5 screws does something else need to be done. Plate is not moving. Do I need to move tremolo bar forward and then lift?
Finally took it to local Guitar Center- my Mustang (got the Lake Placid Blue 😁) had a little of glue under the plate. Did the KC fix by flipping the tremolo so strings go through). Thanks for your Video! It helped the Guitar Center guy who had never worked on a Mustang. 🤘
my springs just fell off before I even took the plate off. what a mess these trems and bridges are... oh and the big and small alan keys didnt fit in any of the places they were supposed to..didnt need to use them for the trem anyway as the posts were so loose.... do you know if they use US screw sizes in europe or is it only the alan key slot and nut heads that have different sizes that ours ..
How many of the washers do you have to use? just one on each side of the trem bar or all of the four washers stacked on top of each other and do you have to flip the trembar or would it be better to flip it? I have this model guitar and wanting a tech to lock the trem because I may not can do it. Buy hopefully won't have to. And the problem with the tech is there's not any unless you drive a 2 hour trip. An all day thing. Help??
No you do not HAVE to flip the trem piece. I just did it because then you do not have to wrap the string around it. They can just be strung straight. Personal preference. Washer, it depends, with the washer I got I just have 1 on each side on the top. If you want to replicate EXACTLY how cobains was, his was a stack of washer under the bridge plate/inside the guitar. So sadly the answer here is going to be "it depends". Luckily washers are dirty cheap. So you won't break the bank either way. Unless you are REALLY uncomfortable doing this yourself, I would suggest you give it a shot and take your time. Seeing as you will take off the entire metal bridge piece to do this, there should be no way for you to damage the guitar. At worse, take it to a tech if you can;t figure it out.
great video! i have the same mustang - lefthand version. So i always thought about locking the trem because i would hope for more stability. My questions: what are washers in german? are these things like "beilagscheiben"? if i lock the trem your way - i'm playing 0.9 to 0.42 strings - will it stay intonated? or should i intonate it new? thanks!
going by google image search...yes those would be washers. If you aren't changing tuning or string gauge, you should need to adjust the intonation really, but its always good to check your intonation everytime you change strings regardless. If you're not sure about how to do this there are plenty of videos around. I might make one next time I have to.
Santiago, I just used a single washer on either side. The washers I used were a bit thicker so I'd suggest experimenting. Usually washers come in a packs anyway and are never too expensive. In my case as mentioned it came with 4 washers for about 2$ canadian and I only used 2 of the 4.
Awesome video, was the break angle alright when you did this method to the bridge and tremolo? I thought the string through method would not give it much of break angle to the bridge which generally may cause tuning issues, did you have any issues after doing this?
Great vid! Just what I was looking for. I'm going to try this tomorrow on my Japanese Mustaings (with matching headstocks!). Is the adjust-o-matic bridge necessary if I'm happy with my action and already have no tuning issues? Thanks for posting this!
TonyPeesTunes Nah the bridge doesn't matter. If you're happy with the mustang original bridges go for that. The Cobain ones just come with an ajust-o-matic (or probably a copy of one really). Glad I could help.
Thanks. I wish I had seen this sooner. I wouldn't have ordered the bridge from eBay. Haha oh well. I imagine adjusting intonation will be easier with the AOM. It looks like the adjustment screws are front facing. Or maybe I'm looking at it backwards.
TonyPeesTunes Intonation screws are sometimes forward sometimes on the back... Depends on the model really. The mustangs are front facing, my gibson they are rear facing. Well the AOM will be an improvement at least its not money wasted. Hopfully it fits in the cavity for the mustang piece. If not...tape!
Livlos yeah, all mine are rear-facing :/ I'm planning on putting 12s on all of them. We'll see how that goes. Haha.. yeah well if this works out, maybe I'll just turn around and sell it.
Livlos so I just took mine apart and remembered what you said about the bridge. I'm wondering if some of them were simply put in the other way around... even though all 3 of mine are facing in the same direction. I'm tempted to reverse mine.
And if I replicate it just like Cobains. Would I have to route out the body in under the plate in order to put in washers below the plate like Cobains?
Ok I'll try to do it. I'll have to get the right size allen wrench because I lost the one that it came with. Do your know which size the allen wrench is? And how do you put the washers under the trem plate to do it just like Cobains? Or would it be much harder to do than thIs way?
I don;t remember how to do it the other way by now, google it, there are official nirvana sites with diagrams etc. I looked all this up a long while ago. There not need to route anything either way. I think I just went the way I did because the washer I got were too big to fit, and looked ok on the top. But like I said, you can take it apart and see what works... at worse put it back together with out any mods, or bring it to a tech in pieces
I left the srpings in....cuz...why not but if its solid with out and you can;t be bothered to put them back go for it. Nice on the jaguar, I;ve been looking for one but they are always over priced...or fiesta red
I'm thinking of doing this to my recently acquired 96 sonic blue mustang. But I just picked up a Mastery bridge for the guitar, and I'm not sure how that may impact the effectiveness of the bridge, or if it's even worth it. Do you have any opinions/suggestions?
+pandemic7 If I'm not mistaken the MasteryBridge would only be the piece with the string saddles. Shouldn't change anything really. Try it out with the new bridge before trying to lock it, see how it feels. What I did here is 100% reversible anyways
+Livlos yeah the mastery bridge is supposed to be a major improvement with keeping it tune. But we'll see. If necessary I'll go thee extra mile and lock the tail. Thanks!
Hi there, thanks for the helpful video. I have one question, did you stick with using just one washer for each post? I've been reading up on this and many people say to use more than one washer for stability. I have set up my Mustang neck relief and action perfectly but as soon as I tune up it goes out of tune. I'm hoping locking down the bridge will solve this problem. Cheers!
hey dude i'm thinking to install a mustang bridge in a 3cm guitar body. about the size of the ridge posts and the holes to put them on that guitar. how much i have to carve the wood to instal it? it worths ? what's about the trem system intonation? thx so much
I honestly wouldn't bother. The mustang bridge isnt't something ppl aim for...its more something ppl deal with. there are other better options if you want to go for a trem system, and many that would require less mods (bigsby for example.)
Ugh, aesthetically speaking, I don’t like the washers on the outside so I’m putting them under the trem plate. Still gonna use the stock Jagstang bridge but if I change it out it’ll be changed to a TOM bridge but I’m trying to keep my 97 Jagstang stock. The PUP’s are weak but there’s still something cool about that lol My Strat has Texas Specials and an SH4 JB, the Jaguar NOS is stock with the Dimarzio PUP’s so my guitars will all have a different sound to offer. But if I ever do mod my Jagstang it’ll pretty much look like this one (I know this is a Mustank) except I’ll use a tortoise shell pickguard not that vomit red one lol
I've got a modern player mustang and I'm experiencing a lot of frett buzz when I play on the low E. The bridge I have is I think the same that comes on the squier one, not sure. Do you think locking the trem and buying a tune-o-matic bridge will help?
it won't hurt...but no I don't think it would fix it. fret buzz is caused by the string hitting frets while you play it. what you need to do is determine what is causing the buzz. this could be a front or back bowed neck. uneven frets. or having your action set too low. or you could be using much too light a string gauge. I would suggest at least 10s on a short scale like the mustang. shoot me a pm if you need any help
I've tried heavier string gauges but I doesn't help. I have raised the saddle for the low E as high as I can but I'm still noticing it. Especially when the low E is dropped to a D. The saddles are all really weird. I can send a picture tomorrow if that might help haha. BTW Thanks so much for helping me and replying so quick
Looking up the modern player mustang, it would have an original mustang bridge, the Cobain mustang has more of a tune o matic bridge. on the tune o matics you have a screw on either side to raise or lower the entire bridge. On the old mustang you could do the same by using an allen key in the holes on either end of the bridge to lower or raise the entire bridge piece. Of course again the first thing you should check is if your neck is actually straight. I may make a few videos on how I set up my gear. If you aren;t comfortable with adjusting the neck yourself I would suggest you bring it in to a luthier as you can break the truss rod en end up needed a new neck.
I had my guitar checked at my local guitar store and they said the neck was perfectly straight. This is a picture of the bridge I have www.fmicassets.com/Damroot/Zoom/10001/0242300504_gtr_frtbdydtl_001_nr.png But it's really weird i need to check on my saddles every few weeks because sometimes on part of the saddle is higher than the other part.
Humm apparently youtube didn't feel like posting my reply. As I said before...You should be raising the action using the post screws (hidden in the holes on either side) and not the sadles. This should take a hex/Allen key.
Just for anyone watching this, when he says about using 10-46 gauge strings, having that light a string gauge over a short scale length as Mustangs do can really mess with the neck and truss rod over a long period of time.
Ben Forsey well...yes...but that is the same for ALL guitars. You need to set up your guitar fully for your strings always. But that was not the point of this video. But yes you are correct
Yeah I'm sure it wouldn't be the worst thing ever. But i did see this video where this guy was setting up a '65 Mustang and he said because the neck didn't have enough tension on it, it made the truss rod not work properly. But that's over decades of use so.. I've set up a couple of Mustang's recently and I've personally found they feel way less floppy with 11-48's on personally, but that's just me. Have a watch of this video if you haven't seen it before, I found it really interesting! And for what it's worth, you still taught me stuff about Mustang setups I didn't know so thanks man! th-cam.com/video/8PPxS8gTyno/w-d-xo.html
humm...hard to tell with out seeing what exactly you are doing... Are you putting the washer inside or on top like I did? do they fit snuggly around the posts or are they loose?
Had to rewatch my own video...it's been a while. Few things, as mentioned I brought the posts in with me to make sure the washer fit. 5/16 fit fine on mine (cobain model firts run) but I can;t guarantee other mustangs are the same size. Hence bringing the post with you...but hey washers are dirt cheap. next if they are just slightly loose it shouldn't matter. what you want to to screw the posts back in (don;t over tighten) so that they are in there snug and will prevent the tail piece from moving. If you are still having trouble, could you PM me some pictures or if you could upload a video? I;d be happy to take a look and see.
Kurt used 10-52 gauge strings. You are correct in that there is actually no need to cut the notches any bigger on the nut. I have 11-52's and they fit just fine.
Did this mod years ago to a 69'reissue, will be doing it today or tomorrow depending on UPS,thanks for the video.
No worries always glad to help :) Fender really should have just shipped the thing modded already if they wanted to be exactly like the Cobain ones.
i just use a bolt the same size but shorter no need for washers. just screws right in... did my two jagstangs this way..also don't need to mess around with the springs...
Thanks for uploading this video! I have just done this modification and it has made the guitar play and sound a lot better! Cheers!
karlosquinky Cool glad to. Since doing it myself, its by far my favourite guitar
Such beautiful guitars. I have a fiesta red one. I think I'm going to save up and get a sonic blue one also. Good video mate.
Thanks finally got my mustang for Xmas same exact color and model you have. Did not come with whammy bar and I don't use tremolo this is my 3rd mustang and always would go out of tune and out of all my guitars my KB stang holds in tune better then the others. Geronimo!

I don't know what this other guy did... But he did something really wrong or is making stuff up..... I've had no issues at all
Thanks for this. I got a KC Fender Mustang and trying to remove the Vibrato plate unit. After the 5 screws does something else need to be done. Plate is not moving. Do I need to move tremolo bar forward and then lift?
Ah ~ it’s hex key. Have to turn screws 🤣

It's the Cobain mustang. It comes with a tune o Matic style
Livlos will it work with a fender classic jaguar tune o matic bridge

you think that by blocking the tremolo the tuning can even stay more stable?
Mi5Cobain CFBR won't hurt!
so do you have to remove the springs to lock the tailpiece? or was that just your preference?
rob1996ization you need to get washers on there either on the top or inside...so yeah you need to pop the springs off
Couldn't i just take the cigar tube off?
good question... trial and error have a go..report back!
Man, i really appreciate your time, but holy cow, get on with it, didnt need the epic version
Am I missing something. I am using 5/16 washers and it won't lock?
humm...hard to tell with out seeing what exactly you are doing... Are you putting the washer inside or on top like I did? do they fit snuggly around the posts or are they loose?

Bro, for real. Thanks man. I love my mustang but this bridge is a bitch.
no worries glad I could help a few ppl
That was helpful
There is a way to lock the trem without having the washers visible.
nice thanks
Is it me or does this dude sound like Kurt lol
Shaun P I'll take that as a HUGE compliment
hahahahahahaha true
9:32 oh yeah lol
Shaun P just you
Lol absolutely not.
Took.you an hour to get two springs off? Surely your kidding
Just yesterday bought mustang. Already sick of this tremolo.
