  • Did the referee save Tyson Fury from knockout defeat? My thoughts on the big undisputed heavyweight title fight as well as the rest of the card in Riyadh.

Let's be honest, who saw another fight where a rev didn't jump in when one fighter dropped both hands to knee level and falling helpless around and touching 3 different ropes which each stopped him from falling? I don't know the rules for this specific fight, but usually the rev should have start counting the moment when he saw Fury was defenseless and that was a good 10 sec. before he actually interfered and then the bell saved Fury.

When a ref deems a fighter defenseless, he should stop the fight but when the fighter falls into the ropes and the ring is the only thing keeping him up, then he has the discretion to rule a knockdown and administer a count. If a fighter is just defenseless without the ring holding him up, then his only option is to stop the fight.

@@droeksonboxing If anyone was ever defenseless in a boxing ring, then it was Fury in this 9. round.

The referee had only two options: give Usyk two finishing shots or stop the fight.

Fury was in squat position when the Ref stepped in, that stopped Usyk giving an uppercut to knock him out. Look at it over and over.

Briedis and Opetaia was another bloody affair. Mairis turned it on too late. Classy outing for Opetaia.
Haven't watched any of the other bouts yet.

It looked to me like Tyson fury got knocked down. The ref had to call it. If the corner hadn't stopped him, he would have fallen. And he probably would have gotten up again just like he always does.

Awesome to see you review a fight card for the ages. Great points here Droeksy ..
Usyk! , wow ! I've always been big on him. He is relentless. Came out fast and stole first 2 rounds, then Fury found success in 3, 4, 5 and 6. Then 7 and 8 were closer but still Usyk due to work rate and forward pressure. Then from Round 9 onwards it was all Usyk(besides round 12 being close). Really disappointed to see a judge give it to Fury. It wasn't a shut-out, but I thought it was a clear UD for the Ukrainian. Anyway, the right man got the nod.
Thinking back to Dubois vs Lerena, how the ref waved it off right on the bell in that fight. I'm glad the ref gave Fury the break to recover after Round 9. We wouldn't want a controversial stoppage in a fight of such magnitude. Glad it played out the distance.
Falling into the ropes after a big shot can be classed as a knock-down for sure (one I recall was when Corrie smashed Hasim Rahman into the ropes).
Rematch will be equally fascinating. I'd like to see if it actually happens in October. Knowing Fury, there will be some delay. Don't think Usyk will retire, he still sharp and better than ever.

@samuraijose817 punch stats don't agree with u and ter are no even rounds.. fury was pushed back and outboxed.. 1 uppercut here or ter doesn't win a fight.. let's see wat the guy with the 40 lb advantage does in the rematch

@@dilochetty9332 that's how you know you didn't watch the fight. The highlights of furys punches was in the body shots. Usyk stood still for 8 rounds because of them.

@samuraijose817 the facts cannot be changes and are not debatable.. usyk outlanded fury in 9 out of 12 round including a knockdown..those are facts..and guess what, he also outlanded fury on body shots.. but it's fine, don't let facts get in the way of a story u want to tell. Maybe what u believe in is stronger than facts

The problem with your theory is that Usky was just about to put the nail in the coffin and then The Ref saved him with this BS. Go watch the video again. The ref is holding him, if that were not the case them it would have been a clean knockout. Disgraceful and then gave one of the slowest counts in boxing history. Bought and paid for by the Fury camp.
