That's a nice grinder. Like the large tool rests

I love a good flea market! I purchased 4 craftsmen USA made cold chisels and 2 files for $5. I don't have a grinder so I hope files will work.

That is what I intend to do, since there is nobody near here to be my striker, nor someone who would like that line of work. Right now I've finished my railroad track anvil, which settled around 26 pounds as a substitute for my 12 pound sledge head anvil. Still need to do some work on one side of the horn to be more symmetrical, but it's mostly cosmetic. I'll be sure to drop by and tell you how it's all going. Also a piece of square tubbing will be my hardy hole. Thanks!

Good guess Rafal. Steel that has been heated yellow hot is much softer. The hot chisel is sharpened at about 30 degrees and is ground on one side like a wood cutting chisel.
I seldom use one as a hand held tool but I have one that fits in the hardy hole on my anvil for cut off work.

Good steel. Nice sparks. I had my old big chisel out going to do something to the Duerr and noticed it was getting mushroomed but not from me. But I need to grind it down to save what hands I have. Thanks for the reminder, Unc.

+Lewie McNeely Since I left the foundry I haven't used chisels as much. There it was a constant battle against machines that were worn and beaten to odd shapes by heavy objects. We use to cut a lot of plates and knock bearings off of some big head pulley shafts.
A buddy had a piece of punch flake off as we were driving a pin out of an oscillating conveyor arm. The piece entered his wrist on the inside and slid under the skin 3 inches toward his elbow. No more mushroomed chisels for me after that.
I need to show how to make a chisel handle. Keeps your hand out of the hammer striking zone. I'll put that on the video idea list.

That'd be good, Unc. I always use a pair of Vise Grips or Channelocks when I get to frailing on one. I've got a buddy that swung a 16 pound sheep nose sledge in an olivine mine all day and when he goes to knock something loose, he comes from the ground up and never misses, BUT he'll scare you slam to death as you watch it come! Started welding 4 foot handles on things to get out of "the line of fire" so to speak. I know Mine Safety and Health (MSHA) will can you for a mushroomed head or a tool rest on a grinder being away from the wheel over 1/8th of an inch, along with just about anything else. Glad I'm out of it. Waiting on the next'un.

You are right Rafal. 30 degrees per side or 60 degrees for the included angle.

Thank you for responding. I wonder if there is anything you could say about grinding hot chisels. What angle would you use? From what I gathered they are not heat treated and my lucky guess about sharpening it would be 30-40 degrees, something like an axe.

Sooo... It's 30 degrees per side, right? It's a bit confusing, since sometimes people say 30, sometimes 60, and they all mean the same. :)
