There is lots of land on the island. But the land they want is right downtown so they can build mega hotels. Went to Bar for decades. Don't have any interest in it now. Its gone from college/tourist town to a land based cruise ship. You can't even see the water from half the town due to buildings in the way. Sad.
As an '87 alum of College of The Atlantic, when I was in Bar Harbor ladt year, I almost did not recognize it. Wow, how progress has completely paved over and filled in every nook, corner, and cranny of Bar Harbor. A small island like MDI has a carrying capacity, we just can't keep filling in the ocean and pave over paradise all in the name of capitalism. Gone is the beauty and charm of Bar Harbor. Gone is the quaint nostalgia of small town living, Gone is the construct of community and togetherness. Have we learned nothing from Silent Spring and The Lorax? Bar Harbor is completely buried in Hotels, resorts, motels, lodges, Inns, my goodness there has to be a balance between the environment, the ecology, and economy and human life and the spaces inbetween. It is a serious human ecological problem that has reached critical mass. It has to be addressed now. A moratorium may be a good temporary element because it will simply put things on pause while all the right people can come together and have a symposium to have constructive dialogue about comprehensive planning for Bar Harbor. One of the brightest keys is right in front of you! College of the Atlantic, yes have them do a comprehensive study of the issues and have them come up with 3 different comprehensive plans for Bar Harbor. Some of our countries brightest minds are there and they have what it takes and more. COA is one of our countries brightest and most intellectual colleges with the human ecological discipline to tackle such a multi faceted problem. Begin with Gary Friedman, have him coordinate and lead this movement and momentum. He knows how the College works best. I urge you, do not wait, get this one done, get it right, just look at what happened to my childhood home, Cape Cod, it got destroyed because there was no intelligent comprehensive planning and way too much old money back door deals and devious dirty small town politics. You do not want this. I urge you to tackle this now. Please do not let Bar Harbor and MDI fall prey to big time corporate developers and dollar driven entrepreneurs that no nothing about the environment and the ocean. It was very sad to see Bar Harbor go from Miltons protected paradise to a paved over pig pile where buildings and bodies are stacked like cordwood. Please heed what I am saying. Have COA help with this.
Coming from Nantucket, I would say there needs to be a balance. They might be better off limiting the amount of homes bought by investors as rental units. Dropping taxes and inheritance tax on local resident owned year round homes and locally owned year round rentals...maybe considering the same for resident owned seasonal rentals if they only rent to seasonal workers. In short, keep the tourists in the hotels, and the homes for the locals. Where it's gone terribly wrong on Nantucket is all the wealthy NY and Boston investors buying up the homes that families loose to inheritance tax, then they rent them for 3k a weekend to high end tourists, who in turn don't understand why there's no cab to pick them up at the boat or airport. Workers cannot get a seasonal rental under 30k because they have to pay tourist prices. Locals are lucky to get a shoebox apt rental for 3k a month.
Yes!! This is the right thing. Keep the charm. Make it a desired destination, not a tourist trap. It's a wonderful place. Drive in, enjoy, drive out and stay elsewhere. Save those old residences. Good on ya, Bangor!
tourism is your industry, it is what makes bar harbor successful, and just think of all those taxes that those businesses contribute, yet you also need to rein in somewhat, but be careful of what you do, when you build more in surrounding communities, you better have a good public transportation system, and not stop it on oct 14. we could hardly find parking in downtown bar harbor, therefore we went to schoodic point, southwest and northeast harbors.
How would an old Lesbian 1. be able to afford Bar Harbor , 2. take up massive quantities of real estate when we are a small population of people . 3. All caps makes you look crazy, 4. What the heck are you talking about?
I remember Bar Harbor when we went Bar hopping , which consisted of walking across the street , would not bother to go up again
PLEASE DO NOT turn Beautiful Bar Harbor into Downtown Portland !!!!!! STOP the expansion of hotels on MDI

That’s an overstatement!
There’s no need for hotels on the island at all. Build in Trenton & Ellsworth

Nantucket soiled itself
We used to live there and my partner works there in the summers and there is NOWHERE for workers to live.
my brother loved this place
Let's address the local homeless 1st
The GREED of some are going to RUIN MDI for the MANY others that value the BEAUTY of MDI

Are' there town counsel, ARE!
Why no video/visual....just a black screen thruout?
As long as I can pay at least $80 for a 4 oz lobster roll, I'm happy.
