If the price for these were more realistic id bet a lot more people would own them and breed them. I know i would but 300$ for a baby turtle are 500$ for an adult breeding pair of black turtles is disgusting. My dog/best friend cost me 50$ from a methhead, who in their right mind is actually spending 300$+ on these small bland turtles?
grant Diggs They're expensive due to their vulnerable position in the wild. Americans have a terrible problem with taking animals from the wild, and because of that the Spotted Turtle needs to be priced accordingly. With that being said, $300 for a turtle isn't terrible, they're long-living pets. I think that the Red Eared Slider situation is a good example as to why turtles aren't comparable to dogs (or any domesticated pet) and shouldn't be treated or looked at as such.
Ya I know that. 300$ for a turtle is ludicrous. I'm saying if they didn't cost a months rent more people could breed them. What's the difference between a pet dog and a pet turtle? Seem the same to me.
grant Diggs Do you understand supply and demand? It's simple, supply goes down, demand goes up. Demand goes up, prices go up. Dogs are cheap because there is certainly no shortage of them. Spotted turtles are rare so they have a high price, RES are far from rare and are therefore cheap.
I grew up near a lake that was filled with spotted turtles. It was the only place I've witnessed them in the wild.
Would housing these together with eastern musk turtles be advisable?
Is it possible to breed clemmys guttata without cold water because i live in a country without winter season

Don't forget that they're also illegal in some states so it's even harder to get them and breed them
