So many "Jimmy Page technique" videos just concentrate on tone, effects & volume - what I like about your video is that it looks at notation & feel: the things that matter most. Quite frankly, Jimmy Page would sound great playing a Watkins Rapier - it's all about 'touch'. Great video, Robert
great lesson. i’m kind of obsessed with pentatonics. there’s so much you can do with them. you hit on a great example and laid it out nicely. note: if you remove the major third the combind scale then becomes dorian. put the the major third back in but remove the minor third and the combined scale becomes mixolydian. and it’s fun to play it without the ether third in there. would love to see a breakdown like this for Randy Rhoads, Ace Frehley, Michael Schenker, George Lynch and Brian May. 🤘🏽🎸🤘🏽
Hello Robert: this is Martín (Tyncho) from Argentina. I really do love your videos and lessons. You are and amazing guitar player and also have a gift to teach with a "down to earth" aproach. Thanks a lot. I´m 52 and a 40 years Jimmy Page fan and I can say that NOW I´m really learning. Big hug!
Dude! I just signed up, and printed out the scale. This has been literally been one of the least hassle things I've ever done on the net. Thanks bunch. And totally nice print out. Now I have something fun to do after work.
@@patrickrosington1174 *-BLASPHEMER!* Slash's work on "Appetite" was pure genius especially for only being 22 years old at the time. The man deserves respect for brilliant work on 4 great albums in the 80s & 90s.
Love love love your tone on this, too often I hear guitarists trying to imitate Page's sound with way too much gain, but you've got it right in that sweet spot
I may have some suggestions for the next installation of this if you do plan to make this a series! Randy Rhoads John Petrucci JImi Hendrix (That one will be exciting to watch!) Eric Clapton Ace Frehley George Lynch Peter Frampton EVH Zakk Wylde Stevie Ray Vaughan Brian May Joe Pass Mark Knopfler Ritchie Blackmore
Robert, thanks so much for posting this! Page has been my biggest inspiration and the main reason why I picked up the guitar in the first place and what you explained here is something I've been chasing around for years trying to figure out. One thing I do have to ask though...do you have your neck pick up wired out of phase? I notice a very glassy tone that one usually doesn't get with humbuckers unless one of the pickups is wired out of phase. If that's not the case, HOW THE HELL DID YOU GET THAT TONE??!!! Cheers!
Robert, really love your stuff man, I've learned a lot from you already. I really liked this one especially, because of course I love Page's style. As far as doing more of these, one that is off the beaten path, and probably more challenging than Page, is Rik Emmett formerly of Triumph. A guitarists guitarist for sure, and one of my all time favorites. I challenge you to do a Secret To Style on him!
The intro to Johnny b Goode is a classic mix of maj and min pentatonic. Classic blues is you play the maj over the root and 5th fret chords, and the min on the 7th fret chord. Always sounds good, you can hear Hendrix do this in the solo of Come On.
Great video Robert Zeppelin rules the universe keep up the good work my friend, never stop rockin! It would be cool to learn more Hendrix and Clapton riffs and cant have too much Eddie Van🎸
Starting the pentatonic shapes at “box 1” for minor and starting at “box 2” for major is how I learned major vs minor pentas. I had never heard of dropping box 1 down 3 frets for major until a few years ago. For beginners I think the method in this video is better. I’ve seen where many people get confused by the 3 fret rule because they can’t wrap their head around how the same shape can be major and minor. Starting with shape 2 for major eliminates that.
makes sense. i play in a Zep tribute band, and noticed how he mixes minor & major as you say...never thought he made his "own scale" out of it...great video thanks
Awesome to see someone finally show this. This is what I've been doing recently and I like it. I really did it cause I was trying to figure out how to get a country sound, and also a jazzier sound. I tend to just think of major pentanoic as this particular box now I take it even farther as far as the super scale and throw in the blue notes from both major and minor, the other notes of the major and minor (though not to much ), and also your A melodic minor scale (jazz scale) is right their too. I find when you do this and especially when you stay away from predominantly minor pentantionic when you do pull off a typical minor pentantionic lick it sound so satisfying, instead of sounding overdone when your stuck in that constant pentantionic box 1 rut.

Loved this lesson. Pagey has always been one of my favorites, I always love to go behind what I hear and see somebody really prepared analyze what he does.
Yeah, do more please. You're very good at noticing and then producing players' signature moves and styles. Great strength to have. Thanks for sharing it with us advanced (NOT professional) players.
Very good video, I appreciate the more focused and serious explanation. The detail is refreshing from much more of the “entertainment” style of many guitar vids. Please keep this going Robert!!!!
What pickups are you using Brother? Do they make double whites that are aged? I’d like a patina too on the pickup bobbins but not as cream as yours.I have whiter pickguard and rings. I want a patina on aged nickel silver covers and same material on the bases. Damn fine sounding pups! Who made em’? What do they cost? And can you leave a link in the response please? This was great, Robert. Would love to see you do more of a series like this, covering other guitarists (e.g. Slash, Zakk Wylde, Michael Schenker, EVH. Billy Gibbons, etc.).
Dude! Thanks for the "ah ha" moment! I never thought about scales in this way. Really cool man for sure!! Would love to see Randy & Dimebag for sure!! 🤘😁🤘
Nice lesson, Robert. Jeff McErlain discusses something similar in one of his British blues classes. Thanks for sharing this! (Oh, and that LP is just gorgeous. I always preferred bursts without tiger striping.)
Great class thank you! I choose Slash all the way! skipping strings and his way of picking and arpegiate is unique. Please do the intros of paradise city and welcome to the jungle. Maybe dissects the solo of sweet child o mine wich is kind of slow but i don t know what scales are mixed... stuff like that. Anyhow whatever you choose keep explaining the way to think or view the composotions naming the scales instead of "fret 14...". Thank u again!
Love the Jimmy Page lesson & wouldn't mind more. David Gilmour could be a fun one and Alex Skolnick too! Man...I'll stop there or I'd be coming back to edit this all night long... Thanks dude!
Beautiful playing on that song of yours at the beginning and great quick, succinct explanation of combining modes in a free form way (which i do all the time without really thinkinbg about what scale or mode I'm in). I'm not half the guitarist you are but I did understand what you were teaching which shows me that I've actually consolidated more technical knowledge than I thought I had. So thank you! Show us some Kurt Cobaine...
That opening jam was so tasty! It's 5;30 am so I'm saving the rest of video for tomorrow so I can watch with an electrified axe in-hand. Love the series idea. Would love to see Ritchie Blackmore, David Gilmour and Dontno Anymoore....
I think Jimmy accidentally lands on notes that are flat and just bends them to the right note. This is why you see him play with such a tight grip on the neck and he does a lot without moving up or down the neck. He just plays by ear and feel, not by theory.
The accidental notes being bent up, that can still be tricky. Especially on a slower song. He actually plays all over the neck, there isn’t a “stuck” position. Jimmy live is much more complicated than stated here. So many styles and techniques, and the sloppiness, hard to replicate. This video is for beginners or intermediates. Playing Page licks are far more involved than stated here, and generic Page is not successful. Is this a metal player ? Don’t know for sure but many times metal players underestimate Page’s solo style.
very interesting dude! thanks another guitarist that would be cool to analyze I'd say Blues Saraceno (in particular 1st album solo "Never Look Back"). He had a great bluesy touch in his style.
Excellent video! All very well explained! Really appreciate it. Have you ever done one of these on Michael Schenker? He's always been one of my favorite rock players.
Hey Robert, great video it does provide an immediate, straightforward intro to understanding Page's improv style. I was wondering what tuning machines you use on that guitar, thanks.
I would go in the direction of counter rhythms and alternate tunings AND effects. The order of effects and how the song is built. Like what you said here, but I believe what I put up here is more of the point.
Dude, awesome video, how about something you don't see much of, break down some southern rock scale, also major minor, like Freebird, Flirting With DIsaster, Molly Hatchet gets no love on youtube. jimmy is a fan of the interplay between between the light and the dark. You showcased that nicely with your song at the start. Great stuff.

Really dug the 10 years gone ish section in your jam. My favorite zeppelin song

Do Joe Walsh! He’s so underrated but his licks are smooooooth

I love Jimmy Page. Here are some other ideas.
Slash
Eric Johnson
Randy Rhoads
Nuno Bettencourt
Slash does not fit in this list at all. No hate but completely different style from the rest.
Joe Perry, his style is different enough and would be interesting.
