Is it just me, or does Australia do a particularly good job with their Zoos?

I am an Aussie and having visited America and Europe, most zoos there are well run there too thankfully from what I saw., Though I only went to the really famous ones like the San Diego and Berlin zoos.. The former is one of my favourites zoo too. We do have excellent zoos that are definitely worth seeing. Taronga in Sydney and Melb's zoo are both superb and really easy to visit too.... which usually isn't the case down here. 😆

You have an awesome job! I want to take a dragon for a walk! He is such a well behaved dragon! They are monsters out in the wild! I figured he would be a jerk like a captive Nile monitor. I have a Savanah monitor that has a great personality. I got him as a baby and he's 5 years old now. He liked to hiss and tail whip when he was younger, now he thinks he's human. Keep up the great work with him! He's nicer than most people I know.

I REALLY love your enrichment feeding. Alot of.people would just let a chicken or rabbit in their enclosure and watch it get chased and killed.

    1. Wild Komodo dragons prefer basking as they are cold-blooded animals. Komodos can cover long distances when walking in search of food or chasing their prey. They can run at speeds of up to 20 km/h for short distances.
    2. Komodo dragons can grow up to 3 meters in length and weigh 70 kg (the highest recorded weight is 100 kg).
    3. Komodo dragons scratch their faces to remove mucus, which is expelled along with the remnants of their food (such as nails, teeth, bones, furry skin, and horns). This is a common behavior in the wild to get rid of the unpleasant smell coming from the mucus.
    4. In Komodo National Park on Komodo Island, the residents, government, and other organizations do not feed the Komodo dragons. Komodos are left to live freely in the wild and hunt on their own. This is why Komodos are known as apex predators, which exhibit cannibalistic tendencies, especially towards smaller Komodos, as the smaller ones can become prey for the larger, adult Komodos. To maintain the habitat's population balance, residents allow livestock (goats) to be hunted by the Komodos. Komodos have two phases of life. After hatching, they will seek trees to dwell in until they mature enough to descend from the trees. This marks the second phase of their adult life.
Those are some *facts* outlining the differences between the Komodo dragon and the Komodo Lizard shown in the video.

I noticed I felt none of the negativity associated with the taming of a wild animal, nor the training of one. This video teaches and fascinates. Major accomplishment. Thanks

Great look at Krakens routine, I just wondered, does he retain the toxins in his saliva, as I believe in the wild the toxic effect is diet based? If so do you structure his diet to retain or eliminate some or all toxicity? And I love his daily walks, has anyone thought to allow him to take a bite of a fresh kill then whisk the bloody carcass away leaving a trail of blood he could follow through the park to find his meal, just like in the wild...probably not family friendly for guests come to think of it!!

  • @phoenixflier25

I’m sure Kraken is well fed which is why he won’t chase the duck. He has the good life.

Interestingly, the comodo dragon's legs are as thick as the man' arms and legs. So, it looks like both are about equally strong, required the dragon is adult.

no animal is "evil" as long as they are not threatened and well-fed they are all sweethearts at heart.
People just don't know what "threatening behavior" is, or doesn't know the warning signs.
