Good question. It doesn't stick to the surface, but placed freely on the surface, but joined to each tiles around every tile. This makes it impossible to move. Also laying the tiles without any adhesion is important as these tiles can be shifted elsewhere if need arises to shift the play area/court. Hope this answers your question.
