I can remember the day that my (now retired) dentist apologised to me for him needing to wear gloves. Prior to the emergence of HIV, my UK dentist (and probably many others) didn't wear gloves when putting his fingers in my mouth. He just thoroughly scrubbed his hands beforehand, which I witnessed, as the sink was near me in the treatment room.
