    Lump jaw can occur from a cracked tooth by chomping on a hard material. The tooth root/tip nerve has live blood nutrition that gets attacked by bacteria once tooth is cracked. Then pus kicks in and has no way to go. Over time the body will develop a fuser to drain the pus sack most of the time after the tooth nerve is dead and most times the tooth will actually fall out too. The abscess is basically a bag of dead white cells called pus used to attach and control the bacteria growth incased in a membrane bag developed by the body fighting the bacteria. That bag is what you saw plugging up the drain incision. I thought you did an absolute beautiful job on the cow. Hope she appreciates her owner.

    Hi, thank you for this video and for what you do everyday to feed the world! Would you say there’s any hope for the cow after it turns hard? Any information about after it turns hard is much appreciated. I started working with a herd after this problem had set in, a very nice young 4 year old cow with her calf has this, I’d like to help her but it’s already hard AND soft in places. Please advise with your experience and thank you.

    Hi good video 👍🏻 ! Years ago we use to get those same lumps in r cows and we would drain the same way! An old style vet told us to feed organic iodine to the cows but u needed to feed more then they would free choice . We feed silage and would sprinkle the organic iodine over the feed in r mixer wagon . It was a powder. I’d say it prevented a lot of the lumps because after we started doing it never had many after that! You do have to watch with bred cows that u don’t over feed it thou they can abort from it . We had about 80 cows and I think we feed about a pound a day or every other day depending we didn’t feed silage everyday 😎

    Did you sterilize the the incision site? The knife? Did you explore the wound and brake up any possible loculations? Did you flush the cavity out with iodine, or anything? Why do you believe your likely dull, multi functional pocket knife is less painful than a very sharp edged scalpel? Just curious if I happened to miss it.

    He sure didn't care for that much. Working cows with a friend of mine back east, he had a bull calf that needed banded. Unfortunately between work and other stuff we didn't get to him right away and by the time we did he was three or four months old and almost too big to handle. So big in fact we had to get a bigger bander that would fit his bullocks in. We learned or at least I learned a valuable lesson that day, get the calves early.

    An abscess does not turn into cancer. And it doesn't turn to bone, either. It calcifies. That does not mean it's bone. Those examples you showed are abnormal bone growth due to bone infections.

    • @BacktotheBasics101
      @BacktotheBasics101  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      According to my veterinarians and abscess does turn in to those pictures that I showed. I know it’s not cancer but it kind of acts like a type of cancer. It’s a bad infection that attaches itself to the bone that does what you just said. I didn’t break it down into technical terms but hopefully in a term analogy that people understand.
      You are correct

      That lump seems to be an abscess, which is basically a pocket of infection. If left untreated the infection can spread to the bloodstream (called sepsis or septicemia) which can be life threatening and/or spread to the bone (osteomyelitis). The lump doesn’t turn into bone, the infection actually invades the bone and destroys it. Those are the holes you see in the photos of the skulls and jaws. I am not a veterinarian. I am a nurse and have seen many cases where untreated infections basically eat away at the bone.

    Lumpy jaw is caused by a fungus. Not all abcesses will result in Lumpy jaw. The fungus has to find it's way into a wounded to result in Lumpy jaw. So to say if you don't get to an abscess soon enough that it will turn to bone is not accurate. Most abscesses will not result in Lumpy Jaw. Just because there is a giant lump (abscess) doesn't make it lumpy jaw.

    • @FreeAmerican-mm2my

      There can be many causes for an abscess, but Actinomycosis is an infection caused by a bacterium of the genus Actinomyces, usually Actinomyces bovis. Since you do not know the cause of an abscess, it should be examined and treated if possible. If it is Actinomycosis and you wait too long, you will have limited cost effective options.

      That was not water it was disinfectant.

    This should have been done by shaving a spot in the area to prepare for lancing. Additionally, this should have been done with a scalpel-the reaction would’ve been less. While the skin is obviously thicker, if it’s prepared carefully, a scalpel is much more humane and comfortable for the ole gal.
