We are blessed to have a gorgeous Japanese Maple near our front door. It was there when we moved in 20 years ago this month (October). I fell in love with its vibrant red color and smooth looking bark. The dark bark is also a beautiful contrast to the red leaves.
I have a acer that seeded its self in my windowbox 22 years ago.. its living in a big pot now since years and it needs to be repotted.. I dont know if it even will come out without braking the pot.. would be real sad.. its a very nice pot .. was costly im sure before I got it from the skip. 😊😊😊
Thank you alan. Our acer is doing well but my husband wants to transplant it into a larger pot. Im not sure it needs it. Also do you need to use ericaceous compost?
I adore Japanese acers, yet every one I tried here in my Virginia gardens looked great the first weeks of spring, but all later developed shotgun fungus, became ugly, and all had to be removed. Boo! Do not want a needy tree that requires spraying. Any other ideas Alan?
Just take a mine out of a part because I thought it was going to grow rather big said on the neighbour about 8 inches. I what you do put it back in the pot.
I have a Japanese Maple in a pot which was a birthday present in June 1985! It is superb!

How do you overwinter your potted tree? I live on the east coast of Canada and our winters are cold.
Just choose a cold hardy species of the tree

Is it possible to take cuttings from an Acer??
yes but the rate of success is low. grafting is the preferred option and air layering
just watch herons bonsai channel… i’ve been watching mr chan to learn all about bonsais, including how to grow cuttings.
