I like when you are winging it. Hearing you talk about the carving gives us a little insight into the creative process, that helps as much as seeing the cuts.
I enjoyed thi video, it's nice to see how you are able to change the carving as you go as it demonstrates how we lesser carving mortals who make mistakes can fix them. Excellent video as usual, keep them coming.
I love the cuts where he cuts two times and then flicks away a little piece just hanging on with the knife. 30:20 It's so satisfying. I'm going to try this myself. Cuts like that are perfect youtube short material by the way. A little loop of such cuts would hook anyone into this channel.
This has been a fun distraction from the 1 X 1, which I have also enjoyed. I really like it. I don't know if this would be good every week, but one or two occasionally would be a blast. Believe it or not, I even learned a thing or two. Thanks for this one and keep it up.
I really enjoyed this. What a treat. I hope you do some more “winging it” videos. These are as much fun as your tutorials, which I thoroughly enjoy. Thank you.
Love it? I could watch you for hours!!! The more I watch, the more I learn. I'll be doing a lot of practicing once we have everything buttoned up for the winter. I did take out a 2 year subscription to Woodcarving Illustrated back in January. Then, of course, I got hooked and ordered a number of back issues. Your work is awesome Doug!!! I enjoy all aspects of it. I know you are busy like all of us, but please keep it coming! I appreciate your time in putting out your videos. Take care!!!
Thanks for the stick-videos! There are way to few out there that also show how to start from just a branch, which can sometimes be a bit discouraging.^^
Love all your videos but it was obvious you were really enjoying the Freeform carve, and I was caught up in it as well. I always learn so much while enjoying your carves. Thanks for sharing your talent.
I've been watching your videos to learn to carve with my 12 year old son. As a backcountry camper also I thought the beginning of this video was hilarious.
I really enjoyed watching you work. Freedom to make your character how ever you decide. That’s how I like to make things. Thanks so much. I’m new to woodworking. I’m enjoying my journey.
I really enjoy watching you wing it. I can really tell you like doin what you do . God has defiantly given you a great talent and I want to thank you for sharing it. I have leaned a lot by watching you .
Nice job Doug, similar to what I do when camping with grandchildren, except.... I do multiple figures standing on top of each other (or snakes/whatever), then a handgrip, with other designs/animals/faces to form a staff or hiking stick. It keeps them interested to see what each one wants, they get to cut their own stick and it gives this old guy something to do around the camp fire. I unashamedly copy some of your designs (from memory). Thanks Doug, haven't been here in a while, love your "work".
Loved watching this one. I think it's more relatable compared to the full on tutorials, not that those aren't great either. I just mean because most times we're all just winging it too. Awesome little guy you carved there. Shame you had to go all that way to find a stick though 🙂
I love this channel. I haven't found any girl characters that you've done. I'm trying to work out how to do some for my daughters. It would be fun to see what you come up with!
Great intro & super video once again. Keep winging it although could you do a tutorial on the hiking old man you painted in your paint along with me video from 3 years ago? Thanks for considering it.
I'm a new carver ( from Canada) and just made the little owl on the 1x1, Question, on this green wood how do you prevent it from splitting? Do you make any female faces? I am 12 mins into this video so, if you say later sorry to bug you. TY for great sound work and videos!!!
Another great video! When working with green wood do you find it necessary to clean your blade afterward and if so what do you use to clean it? Also do you seal the ends of the wood with wax?
DOUG! I thoroughly enjoy and appreciate all of your awesome videos! Question? how do you keep these carvings from freshly cut branches from splitting in the future? 😊
I enjoyed the video. I always wanted to get into wood carving but didn't know how. What list of carving tools do you recommend for someone starting out for the first time?
Theres a carving of an old man in a similar pose at my parents'. They,ve had it for as long as I can remember, and I am now of an age where being forgetful is completely acceptable. Whenever Mom saw me looking at the carving, she would say (in her best old, confused man voice) "Plumbs...?? When did I buy plumbs??". I was around 10 before I clued in that the implication had nothing to do with the old gent discovering unexplained produce in his pockets. 😂
I like when you are winging it. Hearing you talk about the carving gives us a little insight into the creative process, that helps as much as seeing the cuts.
“I won’t get distracted”😂😂😂
Thank you Doug, I laughed so much!
Love to see landscape and a good carving❤
Ditto to all the comments below. Your voice is so calming. xx
I enjoyed this unscripted format. It’s interesting to see the various techniques used to create something new.
I enjoyed thi video, it's nice to see how you are able to change the carving as you go as it demonstrates how we lesser carving mortals who make mistakes can fix them. Excellent video as usual, keep them coming.
Loving this. So much detail in such a small figure. Genius Doug. Looking forward to the next video.

I like you winging it Doug. Nice to watch you work through the carve.
This has been a fun distraction from the 1 X 1, which I have also enjoyed. I really like it. I don't know if this would be good every week, but one or two occasionally would be a blast. Believe it or not, I even learned a thing or two. Thanks for this one and keep it up.

Got a fan from Central Illinois hoping to move to Citrus County, Florida, in the near future
Aspen is available in the US as lumber. Even as kiln dried it is a nice wood to work with.
Love this!

I enjoyed the video. I always wanted to get into wood carving but didn't know how. What list of carving tools do you recommend for someone starting out for the first time?
Hey Doug, I sure would like having access to that aspen wood, but here in Ohio, it's not available, I don't think. It sure is nice and white wood.
