Owned the U.S version, bought it in 2006 for $60CAD at a flea market in Montreal Canada. The lithium battery is for the internal clock and for most save games, it's not meant for powering the console. The system has no region lock but the games are really expensive, I bought a multi cart with 60 games from aliexpress, I barely play it since the screens leaves much to be desired but the battery lasts forever, thinking of getting a LCD mod and lithium battery mod to compensate for the power draw of the new LCD.
I got one of these when they still sold them at Fry's in a clear plastic shell pack with 6 games.

I had the Sega Game gear with the tv converter! I loved that thing.
