    I actually watched the Women's national championship game and did not watch a single second of the men's final this year. They really did a good job marketing the rivalry and stars this year. That being said, I can't even get myself to be locked in for NBA games anymore. I feel as I've gotten older I need to be invested somehow. Finding a unique way to embrace fantasy sports or gambling may attract an audience. Idk what that would look like though. Or ya know... Just do $1 beer and hotdog night!

    I think the enormous positive effect of social media has been overlooked. Because of Tictoc, Twitter - X, Instagram, etc. the women's BB players will remain in the news and public interest. Also, exposure in ads for athletic shoes, sport drinks and both sport and high fashion clothes gives the current young players another edge. I think they have ushered in a new era.

    Total respect for you putting your thoughts out there for public consumption. Gotta disagree on some stuff -- basketball camps and charity runs show a good heart but will not sea change your league. They've already tried to create a family friendly atmosphere but in the national spotlight you need storylines, personalities, drama, and entertainment -- exciting and sometimes edgy., even controversial It's a prerequisite for national attention. Yeah, WNBA players screwed up by taking potshots at Caitlin Clark at first but they stfu real quick when they realized they were getting steamrolled by the sports public for their pettiness.

    • @RobElderton
      @RobElderton  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Appreciate it! I think you underestimate the community aspect… the more accessible you are the more of an impact you make. I’ve noticed it just in replying to comments. If an nba player showed up to my high school practices I would love and respect that player their entire career.

      Trash Talk will be a part of the Equation; LARRY BIRD was one of the
      Biggest trash-talkers ever; No one had a problem w/ that, though it was
      a pre- social media world; people are over-reacting to anyone saying anything,
      even if it's constructive, about CLARK; the People who call those people Haters or
      Racists that are in many ways biased & Racist themselves, and/ or are so Obnoxious,
      they over-look the real problems w/ the League, which has lost Money for
      97 to 99% of their existence; That happened because the League thought they could
      put Clubsin Pro Cities w/ Multiple Teams, get 5% or more of the population, and sell out,
      which was never a good idea, and even if it was in theory, once it backfired they've never
      invested in the best concept of: Going to smaller arenas @ Non-Pro, professionally run,
      Mid- major/ Power 5 Schools w/ Financial stability & great Facilities to lower the Risk of
      Debt, & use bigger Venues for "selected games"... had they done it that way, even for 10 to 15,
      never mind 25+ years, you'd have Solid if not spectacular profit, more teams/ cap spaces for
      Bigger rosters & better Minimum to maximum pay, as opposed to what this gentleman mentioned,
      isolating & alienating other potential fan bases

    Pretty much nailed the high level points. Refreshing to see something that wasn't GOAT GOAT GOAT. I'd add in that the league size plays a huge part. Three players voicing an opinion in the W is the equivalent of twelve in the NBA doing the same which adds to the importance of having a unified PR message and involvement in the community.
    CC is not just an immense talent on the court, but she absolutely loves the marketing aspect. She also loves to be engaged with the community and impact people's lives in a positive manner. CC also only keeps people in her circle that have a positive impact on her and the world. The logo 3's are jaw dropping. Her grasp on everything off the court is what makes people of all walks want to see her succeed. And Indiana is probably the best place for her to carry her entire skillset to the W. The Fever management is clearly onboard with leveraging her marketability.
    As an aside, did you notice how so many teams in the women's tournament unified their messaging after the LA Times and WaPo articles about LSU? A lot of people in women's sports recognize the opportunity in this moment. Cheers and good luck with the channel.

    • @RobElderton
      @RobElderton  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank man! I think Caitlin is going to kill it on and off the court. The logo 3’s are something, but I honestly think it’s the worst part of her game, she just doesn’t hit them at a high enough percentage and often is a possession killer. Wildly underrated as a facilitator, get teammates easy buckets and take good 3 pt attempts and she will average a double double every game.

    • @VMSBIGOT
      @VMSBIGOT 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RobEldertonOne of the reasons she's a good facilitator is due to her logo 3's. Shooting at around 40% (and that increases as she goes farther out) , the defense can't ignore her once she crosses half court. That opens up team mates for easier shots. Not to mention that those shots are what draw people in to watch. I'd say her biggest weakness is related to the 3's, but it's clock management. If you listen to coach Bluder, that's generally her complaint about the logo shots.

    The most important game of 2023 was the defeat of South Carolina at the hands of Iowa led by Caitlin Clark. SC was undefeated and was the defending back-to-back champions. Had SC won, LSU would be an easy team to beat by SC.
    Caitlin Clark won the '23 James E Sullivan award for a second time, becoming the only Collegiate athlete in the awards 94-yr history as a repeat winner. CC may win a third time for 2024. The award is an individual award, not a team award where all team members, including benchwarmers, are given championship rings as in basketball.

    • @VMSBIGOT
      @VMSBIGOT 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Most of the talking heads on major sports reporting have set some reasonable expectations. Most have said they expect her to get rookie of the year, expect the Fever to make the playoffs. There's debate about if she can win player of the year, which isn't unreasonable either. I've not heard anyone claim the Fever will win the championship.
      But this is the type of marketing the W needs. That type of exposure is what will drive people to watch; either to watch her succeed or to watch her fail.
      I'd argue that one of the best draft selections was Vegas with Kate Martin. She's a good player, but has the media exposure that none of their players have. There's upwards of 24 million people who watched her play. If she could draw even 5% of that to watch, that's an additional 1.2 million viewers. And I'm sure it'll be a big marketing push, "Watch Caitlin and her best friend duke it out"

    Pro sports is entertainment. It relies on the appeal of its stars. Read Wilt Chamberlain’s book. Women wanted him. Men wanted to be him. That is the failure of the WNBA stars. Men don’t want them. Women don’t want to be them. To succeed the WNBA needs stars who appeal to the majority of the people.

    Valid Analysis and to Further Your Points,
    the WNBA needs to Fix:
    the "Broken Model" of placing Teams in Pro Cities w/ Multiple
    Teams; If it were up to Myself, I'd Re-locate 10 of 12 Teams
    and /or w/ Expansion, pick:
    College towns Mid-Major & Power 5, Financially Sound w/
    Great Facilities that can be Dressed Up w/ the WNBA Logos,
    Examples would be: Penn Station over Philly or Pittsburgh
    Chapel Hill/Durham 10M apart w/ shared Home Games, and/ or
    Winston-Salem over Charlotte, Colorado Springs or Boulder over Denver,
    and Repeat that Concept w/ team in "new markets" in RI, Idaho, N. Mex, etc
    @ smaller venues 2 Eliminate the Debt Risks they WNBA has incurred by trying &
    failing to 1/2 fill, never mind Sell out the MSG/ Staples Center sized Arenas.
    You could easily expand the WNBA to 20 Teams & 16 to 20 or more Team League 2
    with their own Champioship, a possible WNBA vs League 2 Cup Tournament
    and use a Soccer- Style Promotion/ Relegation System where the Top Two (2)
    2nd League teams get Promoted and the Bottom 2 WNBA teams (19 &20) get
    Relegated / Dropped to League 2; Smaller venues, in good College towns w/
    Infrastructure/ Facilities w/ "selected" Away Home Games @ bigger Venues all
    equates to Zero or Very Little Debt, Profit, and Excitement to 2 Viable leagues...
    Problem Solved
    Great podcast, btw, should do some together.

    • @RobElderton
      @RobElderton  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks man! I love the idea of relegation in any sport, (check out my pac 12 on that) but the markets in which these teams play in is tricky. The reason you see WNBA teams play in cities with NBA teams is almost entirely a staffing issue. I know for the suns/mercury, if you work for the suns, you work for the mercury. That is a huge cost saver for the league because you don’t need to staff an entire new front office, everyone’s just putting more work in the offseason.

    • @csracingreport2024
      @csracingreport2024 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RobElderton
      To Add 2 Your Points, the NBA in partnership w/ Teams in College markets
      could Hire Experienced Trainers, open up internships, preferably Paid ones
      jointly or independently w/ the School, and in setting up Salaries incorporate
      Time & a 1/2 on occasion; The Matching example in Arizona terms, would be
      a Club in Tempe or Tuscon would be top-heavy w/ Arizona State or Arizona
      staff and / or qualified individuals from there and / or other Schools
      It would open up Coaching opportunities as well, and help Recruiting for the schools;
      Money would be saved from a Facility Standpoint w/ the solid infrastructure @ most
      Colleges; in follow-up to your Tricky reference, the balancing act of College Staff being
      overworked is noteworthy, but it's possible the NBA could pay bonuses to their Salaries
      that could Cut Overall Costs 2 hire an entirely different Front Office could work; High School
      coaches / student staff could also play a role, and their financial demands would arguably
      be less; A Team @ Duke in Durham could have staff from UNC, NC State and/ or
      other Schools; be it prep and/ or College; that could be applied in every region, including
      neighboring areas to Arizona, w/ WNBA / League 2 Clubs in Wyoming, Idaho, N, Mexico, etc.)
      and have an early season Midwest Tournament: In Soccer, Cup results Don't Count in the
      League standings, but a wrinkle to have those Games counted could be implemented
      to create a bit of sizzle
