We used to have a large middle class in Nigeria, but it started eroding in the 90s. There’s still middle class but not as much. I grew up in Festac Town in the 80s and 90s but things started changing in the late 90s.
Middle class typically drive the economy. If we have middle class, Nigeria won't be where it is now. Cos there is a handfull people you can call middle class doesn't mean Nigeria has middle class. Even in America, they complain daily about the eroding middle class. Nigerians don't like the truth. Eroding middle class is a global issue and not peculiar to Nigeria.
