Genius Aretha brought me here. As many songs as I've listened from the QUEEN, never heard this. My mind is 🤯. Today is my 7 year anniversary and I have tears come down. Thank you for asking me to be your wife baby. This will be played at our 10 yr. vow renewal ❤❤.
Aretha ! The voice of all voice !. As much as I love other great artists such as Whitney, Sarah Vaughn, Barbara Streisand, Patti, Billie Holiday, Ella, Dinah Washington, Mahalia Jackson, Donny Hathaway, Luther, Peabo Bryson and other greats, all fabulous but Aretha in her prime had a voice that words could not describe . No one before or since could touch her and that says alot because there were/are many great singers. Her voice was the voice of us all !
I am 33 years old and this is the first Aretha franklin song that I remember ever hearing; I was 3 or 4 year old. Omg I mother used to sing this song all of the time. And I remember asking my mother what is the name of this song and she would say "simply Y-O-U" lol so the word you was the first word that I ever learned how to spell, then RESPECT!!!
I'm 75yrs old young female when I heard this song ( YOU ) playing on 125th st next to The Apollo Theater it felt like everything had come to a stop people, traffic everyone was grooving to this song never call ( YOU ) what a moment I will never forget. Nothing like Ms. Aretha Franklin Queen OF Soul..👸🏽👒🌹🌹🌹
This song sends chills through me! I do not have the words to express how incredible her vocals are on here!!!! Spellbinding! I was hypnotized when first hearing this tune.
MY GOD! This song is sheer BRILLIANCE, and the background vocals...anyone else hear the background singer near the end adlibing the high notes? LOVE IT!
Oh!! Wow what!! a giant of a talent, very Brilliant and seductive, and calculated, very amazing, very romantic, deep down feelings, oh !! My i am wanting you, and touching, you, raw feelings Aretha franklin taught our generation, how to express ourselves and feelings to our man!! She the master!! Of her generation, spectacular, voice, the greatest singer of all times the greates singer in history, the greatest singer in the world ❤😊, none can duplicate her talent. however they tried. Other wanting to take credit for her voices, and tryes to hit a high note!! Thinking thats singing. Aretha franklin!! Was given a voice from heaven. And what!! God give you!! No man can take it away. Aretha put in the time and the hard work!! Things was hard for women!! At that time. Aretha franklin wasn't all about the singing thats what people don't understand, she wrote her on music she has a God given gift , know how to tell or express, to people what she wanted, and her father was the great Baptist preacher at that time in his generation!! And the world. He also had a God given gift that could sing and preach like the Angels from heaven!! Aretha franklin and her father was in politics and civil rights movement that captured the world along with the Martin Luther king a Giant of a man in his times and the world.Aretha franklin pave the way for other singer such as pattie Labelle yes!@ pattie Labelle, Whitney Houston, Mariah carey, khaki khan, even Adele, Jennifer Hudson, she was a powerhouse !! She was the QUEEN OF SOUL, jazz, disco, singer Lady of soul , opera, Blues singer, Legendary, LEGEND, ICON, and Won many Grammy Awards, history she played the piano a gift from God!! Plus she help other people by giving money to. She was Superstar, of the world, and her home town where she received and recognized by Detroit Michigan. And holds a key to the city of Detroit. Okay!!she made millions of dollars for singing because she was anointed, and something she loves doing.
My Mom used to play this for my Dad. It still works because I now play it for my MotorCity Husband and it works like it did many yrs ago. ALL HAIL TO THE QUEEN REE!!!
Yeah that was '75 when that came out in the fall, Mr. D.J. was the hit from that album and we played it to death... but with all due respect I've been an Aretha fan since her Columbia Records days but i'm also a Natalie Fan cause I can listen to both version with the same fondness and appreciation.... love you Rere and you too "Sweetie"
I still get goose bumps whenever I hear this song. It's as strong today as it was when it first came out back in '75. Thank you so much for posting this!
THIS SONG IS ONE OF MY "ALL TIME" FAVORITES BY ARETHA .. I HAD THIS ALBUM .. WELL HAD ALL OF EM .. MOM LOVED HER SOME ARETHA ... BUT THIS SONG .. ESPECIALLY THAT LITTLE ADD IN AT THE END OF THE SONG IN THE DISTANCE .. WOW!!! .. BEAUTIFUL SONG .. SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL ..
I don't know if people know or remember but Aretha's version of You charted while Natalie's didn't. This song went to number 15 on the R&B charts for Aretha. Also, this song was written for Aretha in mind. Marvin and Chuck wanted to record an album with Aretha, including This will Be. She turned it down, except for You. Said it sounded too much like stuff she did, so they got Natalie and the rest is history. If you listen to the intro to This will be it sounds like Aretha's you send me.
Lol Aretha gave old experience woman version but Natalie was riding her wave as the sophisticated lady she's a different lady and comes across more believable...every critic of the day gave this one to Natalie....Aretha even named her album You...Natalie still got the Grammy.
Why won't somebody release the "YOU" lp on cd as well as her lps' "Almighty Fire" and "Sweet Passion" PLEASE!!!!!!! Amazing vocal performance by The Queen.
Thanks for posting this, this is the first album I ever bought (or had someone to buy for me) I ever owned i should say. I love you for this memories! but hold on Natalie took this style and she did a great homage with it Im catching hell! dont hate on Natalie for paying homage to the Queen
Natalie Cole TRIED to sing this and it just DOES NOT touch the SOUL AND STRENGTH of ARetha's version. This is my FAVORITE song from her. I'm going to sing this to my husband when we renew our vows.
I aint gotta say nothing you said it all. Natalie just didn't have it. She was only good for a couple of hits and the rest of her career she was just Nat's Daughter and she coasted off of his fame.

Natalie didn't try to do it, she recorded it first and most critics agreed there was no need for Aretha to come behind Natalie because had already put it down and they were already calling Natalie the new queen of soul. Natalie went on to win the grammy by the way over Aretha.

They have not been reissued on CD because they did not sell well at all when originally released on vinyl.
It's a lot of albums that did not sell well that have been released on CD.
