  • ABOUT "STORIES RETOLD"
    This series is not a retrospective or a review, it is a retelling of the story itself. It is also being done from the perspective of someone playing through the games for the first time beginning with Metroid Prime 1. No info or knowledge from a wiki, comics or other games come in until the end - this is a chronological retelling of the story, its lore and overall experience from beginning to end.
    Metroid Prime. One of the (if not THE) most iconic games for Nintendo GameCube, always in the top 5 of greatest releases for the console and my personal favorite. But why is Metroid Prime such a great game? In this new series, I will cover Metroid Prime 1 and Metroid Prime 2 Echoes, covering its story and design.
    _____________________________________
    PART 1: Metroid Prime's story
    When I picked up this game for the first time as a 9 year old kid, I was immediately in love. The exploring, the adventure, and yes, the story. Although many of the dark details of this multifaceted story was lost on my young eyes and young mind. Now as an adult, I look back on just how dark and gritty this story truly is yet is presented inside the package of a gorgeous adventure game.
    This video will be presented through the eyes of my first play through as a 9 year old but through my perspective as an adult almost 20 years later. Its format will be a retelling / reliving of the story with occasional analysis and commentary.
    Stay tuned for more Metroid Prime coverage.

    My favorite, and probably the most common favorite logbook entry, is the one where Space Pirates are attempting to reverse engineer Chozo tech to mimic Samus's morph ball. It has rather... disfiguring results lmao.

    Good narration! One thing, though: Samus doesn’t just want to stop the Space Pirates. She wants to annihilate them. They were responsible for the deaths of her human family and the severe culling of her adoptive Chozo family. They’re so afraid of her for that reason.

      Thank you for pointing that out! There's a lot of context that I've left out of my videos as a huge part of my experience is the fact that Metroid Prime was the first game in the series that I played and really wanted to start there. But this makes the story even more dark and beautiful!

    This was also my first Metroid game. It blew me away. I just remember being captivated by the environment. Even though I didn't know much about the story (and probably skipped through a lot of it because I was 9), I just had a sense of something being totally off about everything. There were signs of life, statues, buildings, etc. But where was everybody? The space pirates didn't seem to fit the mold of the native species. I just had a sense of having *just* missed something devastating.

      You and I had probably the exact same culmination of feelings! That's around the age of my first playthrough. I think that beauty and disonance (coupled with nostalgia) is what brought me back to this game as an adult and ultimately led to the Stories Retold passion project. I love hearing everyone else's experiences too!

    Fun fact: this version of the story is actually VERY VERY different from the later versions of the game that would be released
    (this version is known as the NTSC version). The PAL version (including the version in the Metroid Prime trilogy) has an alternate story to the initial American released versions. Although both stories are very interesting in their own right. they are both technically canonical since the outcome of the plots are the same and don't heavily affect the future games in the timeline of the plot. Very excellent definitely subscribing btw! But also I have a number of other minor corrections and interesting things to tell you! The fight with Meta-Ridley seems kind of underwhelming in how it's portrayed here, with context Ridley murdered Samus Aran's human parents and then not long after, her Chozo caretakers who had raised her. Also, something to note is that the Metroid Prime is NOT the meteor, after playing Metroid Prime 3 it can be discerned that the meteor is actually a leviathan seed originating from the home planet of Phazon, the living planet known as Phaaze. It can be deduced that the Metroid Prime is the product of a Phazon Metroid absorbing the Phazon Core inside of the leviathan seed and becoming "The Worm". This makes sense because the Metroids may have already come in contact with the planet when the Chozo lived upon it, as they are the Metroid species creators. Although maybe you had described it in this way on purpose? If so I applaud you for doing so, because that makes the surprise of learning Phazons true origins more impactful. This has to be one of my favorite Metroid videos now, the delivery on some of those lines are VERY POWERFUL.

    • @DKHZStudio
      @DKHZStudio ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say Metroid prime 3 would redcon the meteor to a Leviathan but yes I like how the tried to put all Metroid game in one timeline. I think Metroid prime 1-3 is set after Metroid/Zero mission and before Metroid 2/Samus returns

    • @Insert_Bland_Name_Here
      @Insert_Bland_Name_Here ปีที่แล้ว

      My biggest question at this point, that I don't think is answered yet is... If Phazon Metroids are stated in Corruption to be Metroids that have been exposed to Phazon, but Phazon in Prime 1 kills Metroids immediately, how could the mutation take place? Small enough dosages could cause it, I suppose, but by Corruption, Phazon is pretty much everywhere, so it would have to be done in a laboratory of some kind...

    • @GldnClaw
      @GldnClaw ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Even with Dread complicating matters a little, I like to think that a Metroid on Phaaze was contained within a Leviathan seed and sent out to Tallon IV. There's a tiny window where this is possible using Dread lore, but still possible so that the NTSC lore is true. As for it simultaneously escaping and being contained within the crater: It's "spirit form" (like that of the Chozo Ghosts) could exit containment while the essence remained within. An additional stretch, for sure, but that's what head-canon is about eh?

    The original Metroid on the NES in the late 1980s was the first video game with an ending that I completed. I had played all the games and was familiar with the larger story when Metroid Prime 1 came out... so it hit especially hard for me when I came into the game knowing that it followed immediately after Metroid 1 and the derelict frigate was one of the Space Pirate vessels that fled Zebes, with Samus in pursuit.

    Ive played through this game more times than I can count since its release, watched so many speedruns and even take part in the randomizer community stuff for it. I appreciated the design, texturing, story etc etc to a great degree but it slowly just became me loving the actual mechanics of the game along with the environments it takes place in. This video, however, really opened my eyes to what a truly special experience this game is. Its art. The story is incredible, the plot is thrilling, the art is perfect, the environments are stunning and so immersive, the upgrades are rewarding, the difficulty level is fantastic and I could go on. Its what games should be, not just an interactive movie with famous voice actors and quick-time events. This is full immersion. Above all of it, I cant believe it came out in 2002! You really did it justice with this video. Well done, seriously. This has got to be one of the only times ive sat for an hour and done absolutely nothing but watch. You should be proud of yourself!

      Thank you so much for your kind words! I absolutely can identify with being so we'll engrained in something you love that you sort of get lost in it. I've felt similarly about things in my personal life! Sometimes taking that step back and falling in love again like we did at first is what we need! That's exactly what happened to me when I ran through the game again in 2018 and decided to make this video.
      I play so many games and so many genres, it's hard to have a top 5 list or an all the favorite since that's so dependant on context. But when considering what you listed, Metroid Prime is right there at the top for me.
      By the way I've watched the Metroid Prime speedruns from afar and am dumbfounded!! I'm the mod for the Battlefield 2: Modern Combat speedrun.com so I can appreciate a cult following of speedrunners. Ours is small but I know the Metroid Prime community has a sizeable speedrunning community. I love seeing the drive to explore more on the mechanic end, map design and fine tuning performance.

I never have and probably never will, yet I absolutely adore watching so many of the runs of not only my favourite games but also any that play interestingly. Like you said, its almost an extra level of appreciation for a game. Its so cool to see that you're in that world though. Going back to replay this game made me realize that I taught myself how to read through video games. I was able to read the intro text and understand it all (except for roman numerals) when I was four years old. When I realized this and told my parents, apparently I had learned how to read yes and no at 3 from sitting in my dad's lap and watching him play games, and just taking in what the yes and no buttons would do on whatever game he would be playing, but I don't remember any of that at all. Planet stuff I remember was super easy to understand because I nerded out on that stuff hard as hell as a kid, I had a book about the solar system and memorized them in preschool.
    Really wish they'd actually make a proper PC port for the games, or a proper PC port for MP4. You CAN'T tell me there isn't a market for it.
    Oh, and I completed the game at 8 with an 82% which I was proud of. the Impact Crater area with fission metroids scared the shit out of me because of how difficult they were to me, and that fear still sticks with me to this day, it's not as hard as when I was 8, but it still freaked me out like I was 8.

Thank you for sharing this and I'm so glad that this happened over a game like Metroid Prime! I think there definitely is a market for it, with all the technology that we have I think it's definitely more than possible, more of a question of allocating resources. But maybe one day we'll get it!

    Haven't gotten far enough into the final battle with Metroid Prime so I'm not sure if he mentions this little detail but it's one of my favorites: One of my absolute favorite bits of lore is where it's told of when the Pirates discovered Prime in it's cavern and tried to tame it as a weapon of their own by equipping it with Chozo tech. Through it's rapid power growth, their experiments got out of their hands and it ended up killing any pirate who were assigned to work with it, and it inadvertently absorbed all the tech that they were trying to equip which is how it's able to do things like launch missiles and use the wave beam and things. That's one thing I love about this game - A detail like that makes absolutely no difference to the gameplay of the battle, and it doesn't give you any particular advantage in reading it, but it does give Prime a backstory for those who have the interest and patience to read through the countless screens throughout the mines and and research facilities.
    One thing I'm curious about, though, is of all weapons it has available to it, the tractor beam is the only one Prime has but Samus doesn't get throughout the game. I wonder if the developers wrote in this as an option early on, and maybe swapped it out with the Plazma beam at some point?

    • @TW33NSW4GGaming
      @TW33NSW4GGaming  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh wow I never thought about that, maybe that was something entirely unique to Prime. In the first phase, Prime resembles almost like a massive spider, perhaps the tractor beam acts like a spinner's web of energy being Prime's unique weapon of capturing prey?

    Great video and amazing story telling/recapping. I had started playing the game a while ago and had nearly finished it but then stopped. Now, months after, I continued the game and finished it but forgot most of the game's lore, so I wanted to get that refreshed, and I am really glad I found this video. Not only was this recapped very well, but it was also entertaining and very clear!

    Great video! I always love to hear when people analize and dissect one of my favourite games of all time. One little nitpick, however, would be about Metroid Prime itself. If i'm not mistaken, the pirate data you narrated, about encountering the creature in a cave and it assimilating pirate weaponry is on the NTSC version, which was later retconned in favour of the PAL version. Either way, it doesn't change much in the great scheme of things. Very excited for that Prime 2 video.

      Thank you so much! This has definitely come up before actually, a few times in the Discord as well. I think the writing meant for the Pirates to have discovered Prime and possibly get some kind of vague understanding, but definitely the detail of their tests in the log would not have been possible with the Chozo containing it in the crater depths. It is totally in the character of the Pirates to have done such a thing, but just not practically possible. It definitely shows that they were trying to, since some of the keys are in their possession; perhaps they were trying to gain access to do more tests. Super interesting!

    • @jhonj5702
      @jhonj5702 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TW33NSW4GGaming The origin of Prime has always been a bit hazy. How could a Metroid have slipped past the Cipher? Did the original metroid come from the Chozo themselves, as they are the creators of the creature, or did it escape from the pirates? It's always fun to try and theorize it, and I do believe the 3rd game can lend some leads on the matter. But yes, the pirates seemed to be vaguely aware of something growing inside the impact crater, that much is sure.
      *EDIT* Deleted some details from MP3 since I did not know you have yet to play it, apologies.

    Amazing video, dude! Your analysis was fantastic! I only got into Metroid about 2 years ago, and I've loved every single game. Metroid Prime was such a challenge for me the first time-- I remember finally beating the Omega Pirate with only 4 energy points remaining, and the Chozo ghosts' music honestly still freaks me out. XD
    The Scan Visor and lore are two of my favorite things about the entire Prime Trilogy, and I loved learning about Tallon IV's story through the Chozo, and all of the Space Pirate logs. The bit about the Morph Ball experiments still cracks me up! I also remember reading the first mention of Metroid Prime in their logs and feeling both curious and nervous that there was a creature with the game's name.
    Anyway, I hope you keep up with this channel! Your work is thorough and wonderfully detailed, and it's awesome how much attention you pay to the story! Best of luck!

    The stuff about Metroid Prime being encountered creates a huge plot hole since it got out of the impact crater that the space pirates couldn't get into, then got back into this supposedly impenetrable crater. Later versions of the game changed the logs to fix this plot-hole.

    Great video! And I’m sure it’s been pointed out already, but something very important to the lore of this series is that Samus is one of the final, living legacies of the Chozo. She was raised by them after her family was killed my Ridley and so things take an even darker turn if you consider Samus is walking through the decaying ruins of her people and uncovering a piece of their story she was until now unaware of. And it also becomes clear why she is able to find so many upgrades that are compatible with her suit and why some of the puzzles cater to her abilities so well. It’s almost as if the spirits of the chozo recognize that one of their own has returned to breathe new hope into their tragic fate

    I hope you read this and pin it because I have to mention this:
    Timestamp: 33:29
    Space Pirate Log Entry 11.156.9 - that Log entry has been retconned from the Metroid Prime story - the log has been changed in the trilogy version of the game.
    I don't exactly know what the log was replaced with - however, the reason the log entry was changed was that it implied that the space pirates where able to enter the impact crater (something that they spent the entire game trying to do) found Metroid Prime (which was cocooned deep in the Leviathan Seed) - document it, pacify it to an extent and leave the impact crater while still trying to find a way to access it.

    • @TW33NSW4GGaming
      @TW33NSW4GGaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's interesting, I never knew that! I will say that unless there was some kind of result where the Space Pirates pacified or found says to control Metroid Prime, I always thought it was kind of strange that the Space Pirates discovered it, yet never entered the crater. I tried to make sense of that when writing the script but couldn't quite connect the dots. Thanks for posting.

    Both of your videos on this game are amazing. I especially love your dramatic reading of that log entry at 36:48 - 38:05; your delivery, the cutscene of the tower being activated and rising up, the music (one of the best tracks in the game), and the actual message of the dying Chozo all combine really well. I honestly wouldn’t change a thing about how you make these videos, they turned out so well and I love how you approach the story, presentation, and themes of this incredible game. I got this for Christmas as a kid and it has always been a favorite of mine, but rarely seems to get thorough, in-depth analysis from people who actually seem to love the game (most retrospectives seem to respect it because of its reputation while also wanting to critique it, as opposed to connecting with it on a personal level and really seeing the game for what it is). I appreciate your approach to the lore as story-telling, since it’s easy for people to ignore it and say “there really isn’t much story.” A lot of games rely on lore to flesh out their world but use supplementary material like books or wiki articles when reading is required, and the Prime games do a good job of at least keeping that reading in-game and in-universe; it’s not the player going on a website to look up background info, it’s Samus herself reading from her personal research log after scanning something in her environment, and her learning the tragic history of the Chozo and of Tallon IV is its own little story...one that is quite optional if the player chooses to even engage with it.

    • @TW33NSW4GGaming
      @TW33NSW4GGaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow, thank you so much! I got this and my gamecube for Christmas as a kid too and I remember the first time playing through it so well! That compelling feeling of being lost in Chozo ruins, not exactly sure what was going on but slowly piecing together fragments from the Lore.
      I really appreciate your perspective, I think we share a similar appreciation for the game, both from it's story within the story but also for the overall experience. And man this game hits hard! Honestly, for single player story games, Prime is at the top for me as far as holding the special place in my heart. I think Mass Effect may have my favorite story but Metroid Prime will always have that favored spot on the podium.

Just a handful of days that we had but it was so fun, as a 20-ish year old, to introduce Metroid to a kid, I think he was around 9-10 or whatever, and watch him fall in love with everything about it. It was so much fun giving him tips or hints when he needed them but letting him do it himself as much as he could, which was really well (smart kid).
