Saw him in Rochester NY in the 70s. Sounded like 5 guitarists plus percussion. I kept wondering where all the music was coming from! It was all leo! Bought all the albums I could get my hands on, been a fan ever since. Cheers leo!

I'm 69 now and I have loved this man's music since the 70's... In a current story telling music workshop, one of the participants is doing "Louise" and I thought of you. I've had that song memorized for decades so I took a trip down memory lane tonight... Be safe and well Leo....and virtual hugs from Northern California..

It's a brilliant rendition of a brilliant composition. The Byrds took acoustic folk recordings and made them rock. Here, Kottke turned the tables on them.

I love the original but the first time I heard this it literally stopped me in my tracks...for the vocal quality as much as the guitar playing. Wonderful.

I was living in St. Cloud Minnesota in '71, Leo played the college there a few times. The day this record came out I bought the very first copy available at the local head shop and went home and listened for about a week straight.

Bought this record on a whim at a thrift store six years ago without ever hearing of the guy. Have listened to it at least twice a week since and haven't gotten bored of it yet. Truly astounding stuff.

Indulging in massive West-Coast wildfire and Covid escapism. A fire is burning through the town to the south of ours. Hundreds of people are losing homes. I'm taking a break from hardening our house and drawing inspiration to go back out into the smoke from Kottke's incredible guitar and soulful singing

I realise it's years on, but I'm hoping you got through unscathed and will receive my notification that someone did stop...did see what you were enduring...and that the magical yet very human Leo Kottke was drew us both together.
      Peace.

This is probably the greatest cover of 8 Miles High I have ever heard....and I've heard a few covers of this great song. I reach for the right adjective to describe Kottke's version....I think you can use the word "atmospheric"......interpret it as you may. Been a BIG fan of Kottke for 50 years. What a guitarist he is....unbelievable mastery of the instrument. He made his box sound like a full orchestra in this rendition. Thanks Leo!

Fort Bragg, CA. Town is a blur amidst a coastal fog. This song. World passing you by. Take a breath, window open, one tan arm burning as it hangs lazily out the doorside. Smell of pine. The coast to your right, waves smashing against the jagged California cliffs. Lady by your side, head out the passenger port taking in the oxygen. Freedom is this fleeting moment before you come down, and realize that the world expects more from you than to just feel. But still, you cling to that idea of freedom and you can't let it go. The hippies lost, but they fought for the true American dream. Freedom is feeling. Freedom is that moment where you realize the horizon is so much larger than you, but still tangible and attainable; just a distance away.
We work too hard. We need more of this.

  • @Vito_Tuxedo

Well, Mr. Kottke certainly didn't feel any need to let his version be constrained by 4/4 time. Nevertheless, I'm always amazed at the breathtaking flood of sound he gets out of one guitar. It even sounds huge when he plays it on a 6-string. I've watched his right hand, and it doesn't compute. I don't know how he does it. No one else plays like he does. No one.
