  • Brownells Public Relations Specialist Roy Hill shows us his Winchester Model 70 Safari Express chambered in .458 Win Mag. Introduced in 1956 as a pure dangerous game stopper, the belted .458 Winchester Magnum packs a 500-grain soft-nose jacketed bullet zooming at about 2,200 fps. This bullet alone is bigger and heavier than a 9mm Luger pistol round. The first gun chambered in .458 Win Mag? The Winchester Model 70. Roy found this beauty at the Brownells Retail Store and gave back some of that month's salary to walk away with it. He keeps it at his desk, just in case he's called on to dispatch a pack of rogue elephants terrorizing Central Iowa (we all feel safer knowing he's prepared!). He gives us a tour of its features, including a pre-'64 controlled-feed bolt, Express open sights, and classic barrel-band sling swivel attachment. How does it shoot? The recoil is... authoritative. Roy shares some tips on how to shoot a "dangerous game magnum" Safari Express.

    Yep Roy, your .458 win safari is a great gun. Buuuut, try another "Roy's" line of T-Rex blasters, as in Weatherby Mark-V in calibers .378 Wby, 460 Wby, and .458 Lott. Any one of which I can personally attest to (having been a gunsmith there for 12 years) will take the curl out of your hair. I always looked forward to shooting the mild .458 Win after getting pummeled by the Big-3.

      @@cezao93 Yeah, the .460 Wby. is pretty much OP, but the .378 Wby. it was derived from is on an whole other plain of self abuse. It's recoil impulse through the stock's comb is so violent and sharp. It's like getting punched in the jaw with each pull of the trigger. seriously no fun at all.

    I have it in a 375 H&H, really love it. In the 375, to me, the recoil is similar to a 12 gauge shotgun, which shouldn't bother anyone, IMO. I've been considering something in a 416 - not because I need it but I'm just a fan of big bore.
    Recoil management - the more recoil a weapon has, the more important it is to have the weapon properly fitted, especially in pull length by knowledgeable gun smith. An improper fit is not doing to direct the recoil forces as well and, depending on how bad the fit is, can be very punishing. Plus we all are different on how sensitive to recoil we are. I'm not particularly sensitive at all, but being on the big and tall side, I found that getting the pull length right is crucial to keep my thumb and/or scope objective from giving my glasses a thump.
    I found the action and accuracy of my Safari Express 375 to be very good. Butter smooth action, and I did have the gun shop glass bed the action to help avoid any future cracking around the action bolts that some have reported. Put 100 rds through it in load development. In mine, the Barnes 300g TSX is just fantastic with approx .75"-1.25" 3 shot groups at 100 yds, pushing approx 2500 fps. The variance in group size was more on the shooter (me) than the gun, IMO.

    • @natural-born_pilot
      @natural-born_pilot 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      m2hmghb There are many sound reasons for qualification standards mostly dealing with safety and completing ajob or task in the right maner. But sometimes the situation is altered and in an instant the laws or standards are ineffective such as in this case. Its a time when professionals on the front line put qual standards aside and allow the one most qualified to accomplish the mission. Its the leway given to police officers to enforce to the letter of the law or spirit of the law. The dose in the dart is already set by the QUALIFIED vet when the trank round is chambered, the vets couldnt hit their ass if they could step behind themselves, and the animal is more than likely on the endangered list so you tell me whats there to be qualified on? Bottom line here is trank and live or deadly force and off to the dump!
