  • A privilege to perform with The Chieftains in County Mayo, the birthplace of my parents, and to speak of Ireland’s incredible Diaspora.
So cool to see the timing of the Marine One fly-by as we play the reel “Farewell to Erin” …carrying President Joe Biden as he comes to the town of Ballina to celebrate his Irish heritage and the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Peace Agreement 🇺🇸 🇮🇪
I loved hearing Ireland's former President Mary Robinson’s reference to her keeping “the light in the window lit" to welcome the Diaspora home.

So PROUD of how Eileen has brought so many musical cultures together !!!! She followed many of us founding Bronx Irish Catholic Females to Iona College. I did not know that my own teacher, Jerry Mulvihill was the first cousin of her mentor Martin Mulvihill. I was Irish American and born at the NY Foundling Hospital in 1951. After eighteen months I was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa. I was adopted at the age of three by a Greek Tribe and a German dad in New Rochelle, NY. I never knew I was Irish. My adopted parents were told I was German. My adoption was not voluntary but a 'back room deal' with John Cardinal O'Connor when he was a chaplain at Annapolis and became friendly with my father. My weight was a constant source of agony to my GREEK MOM ...... so INSTANTLY I began ballet lessons and then tap lessons. And then, our native Irish Pastor in New Rochelle convinced my Greek mother to enroll me in step dancing. Only the pastor and the nuns knew of my Irish heritage. Right outta the gate ...... the dance was in my soul ..... I started out with Timmy Cronin and then two others who were very forgettable.....including their names.........so my poor Greek mother traveled all over Yonkers and the Bronx so I could have lessons. It was heartbreaking for me because ALL the other mothers were Irish and they were VERY cruel to her. But I LOVED the dance. I took lessons from Mulvihill for several years and finally QUIT when he STRONGLY recommended I discourage my Italian/American friend (a great dancer) from coming to class with me. When I met finally my biological mother, Edna Finnegan, for the first time , at the Peking Garden Restaurant on Fordham Road on January 12, 1977 at three p.m. ...... I learned that her father, Ed Finnegan, was not only a dance teacher but also headed the IRB in the 1890's. At the time, my husband's family ....... Murphy from Castle Hill..........urged me to dance at one of their weddings. I didn't want to. My mother in law .........Peggy Kelly Murphy ..... exclaimed "But you MUST ..... especially now that you know you're Irish." THAT PIS"SED me off ! I could only reply "Right. My mother is Irish. But the Greek mother paid for the lessons." I LOVE EILEEN IVERS and love the Chieftains probably as much as Ivers. The music, dance and poetry of the Irish is BEYOND compare .......... the rest, from my experience, .............not so much. REMEMBER EILEEN !!!!! CERTA BONUM CERTAMEN !!!!!! Best everything ! Interesting to note that when Jerry Mulvihill OR our retired Russian Ballet teacher CAUGHT us mixing American and Irish music and dance ....... we got SMACKED ON THE LEGS WITH A POINTER!!!!!! I used to wonder ...... HOW IS IT THAT PEOPLE COME TO THIS COUNTRY, TO NEW YORK, and BEAT New York native orphans with sticks??????? Something didn't seem right. They tell me I was a GREAT GREAT step dancer ........ IDK about that ...... I know I still have the huge scar on my knee from tripping and falling on the way up the competition platform at Iona Feis in ths fifties ..........yes it bled profusely. yes I persevered and YES I won. I never saw my dancing as great. I only knew it as something that lived inside of me and had to come out. Many many years later ....... when i was a senior at Iona, I got a call from my mother .... several of the old parishioners were going to visit the old Pastor in a nursing home and asked if I wanted to come. I went with them but he remembered NO ONE. It was so sad. He'd been a truly holy man and a great theologian with humility in spades. I could not BEAR to see him looking so confused among all the faces anxiously standing before him. So ...... instinctively.................I just started to dance. As SOON as the tapping began on the tile nursing home floor, Monsignor began to stare at my feet and suddenly .... a smile came to his face and his eyes began to tear ..... when I finished the steps and took my 'bow'. Monsignor looked up and said to me "You're mother's the Greek!: " (To which I could hear my mom whisper to a friend ..... 'what the hell does he mean by that/"????? Irish music lifts the orphan's soul and that is NO SMALL FEAT ! Peace!

Lovely to see you there and with The Chieftains and other trad greats. Loved the lady from Scotland - what ambassadors global The Chieftains. You're a fine ambassador as well - we all loved your beautiful COVID concert with Caltech.
