I apologize for how I kept pronouncing hoverboards as “overboards”. My Nigerian accent kept kicking my ass 😔😔😔

I just want more dystopian movies and shows so bad but they always end up flopping 😭😭 also i literally commented this on tiktok but i def taught shay was the love interest until david happened 💀

I’m glad I’m not the only person!!! Like she jumped into fire for that girl!! That is LOVEEEEEEEE 😭😭😭😭.
I too need Hollywood to get Dystopian movies right! They keep messing them up, and with each failure, they reduce our chances of getting a better movie made 🥲🥲

I am still baffled that this adaptation happened; even when I read it in middle school, I didn’t think it would make a good movie, especially because whatever nuance there could be in the story (which there could be for young readers!) would likely get even more lost in the translation from novel to film. If the movie was made for kids, the target audience, I could’ve maybe seen it… if the books had remained relevant for this generation of kids. Instead, it tried to package the story for the folks who read it when they were kids without updating it for our more mature tastes and understanding of nuance. All the reviews I’ve seen so far have only confirmed that my choice not to watch it is a good one 😅😂 I think the adaptation of Hugh Howley’s Wool sated my desire for a good dystopian adaptation for the screen, thank you very much!

When I first watched Uglies I though "Okay I get the jist of it but man why is it written like this?"
Like the premise is interesting enough "controlling people through surgery and frame said surgery as a good thing" but the way they go about it makes no sense. Especially with scenes like the girl infiltrating the city. It just feels like a lot goes right for her.
And I completely agree with you thoughts on the film. The message is sound but it's weird how they frame traditional beauty as part of the issue. It could have instead made up a new kind of beauty standard that was clearly different and unobtainable and use that for its commentary. Would have made the message more clear.

    • @ChroniclesofNoria
      @ChroniclesofNoria  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Right?? Like if they had created a different standard of beauty. I would have been like ah. This makes sense in a way. Both going traditionally beautiful but you lose all reason and can’t think for yourself or process emotions? There’s just something off about that messaging.
Thanks for your amazing comment as always Knight ☺️☺️

@@ChroniclesofNoria there is nothing wrong with traditional beauty. Its the forces that compel people to strive for it that is the issue. And making that associated with "losing reason and thought" just comes across odd. Especially when they could have done something else.
      Thank you!

The idea that pretty/wealthy people have less empathy than regular folks is a GREAT idea to explore in speculative fiction imo. It's a shame, that this movie didnt do it justice.

Just a thought…Joey King (the lead actress in the movie) came to Netflix with this movie idea. Also, Joey grew up on these books.
IMO based on this and previous roles, she may not be what Hollywood sees as pretty enough to play a role that isn’t a blossoming teen or ugly duckling turned pretty.

    Woah I'm so early ❤
Edit: Omg agree that the gay tension is strong w the 2. Its apparently more so in the books, albeit a little more possessive or very suppressed subconscious gay 😂.

After I heard that I was kinda pissed off. Like, why didn't they just made it Canon??? Shows n Movies nowadays tries to push really unnatural chemistry between characters to make them gay just out of obligation.
But this is like in the subtext already, so why don't they 😅😅😅

I do agree with you. It's interesting that I was scrolling through Netflix a week or so ago and accidentally hit the play button instead of the return to get back to the main menu, and that's how I ended up watching *Uglies.* If I'm honest, Joey King was well cast because she isn't even slightly "pretty" (just my opinion), but she is passable. While she is no where near ugly, I could buy into her being tricked into thinking she needed the surgery. But everyone else was ridiculously beautiful, especially SHAY. They did a terrible job with world building in this movie, and they rushed literally everything. I never read the books (and won't do so), and I believe strongly that an adaptation should be able to stand on its own for those who _only_ see the movie. *The Hunger Games* is a good example of that. But *Uglies* was a failure of a movie for me.
    LOVED your review and commentary!!!

Feel free to read the books but I'm not sure the books are that great. I think this books work when you are 13-14 and a bit of an insecure teenager but reading it as a adult I just felt it fell flat. Also yes there is a gay subtext. They should have shown this more as this would have made a more interesting love triangle.

    • @ChroniclesofNoria

Oh it definitely would have given us more of an interesting love triangle to work with 😭😭😭. Or even square cuz I can see her chemistry with Peris as well. Oh well.
And thanks for the heads up. I think I’ll check to see if it’s on Everand so I can just borrow it for a quick read and return it once I’m done. But definitely bracing myself for the many times I will certainly be screaming “nooooooo” at my screen 😭😭😭

XD I didn't evne know this got made into amovie. I read the first because someone I knew really loved it... and one was enough. for the same reason...Now I too read it when I was out of the demogrpahic... I do love the points you made. it had interesting ideas but the core idea felt so weak and the love triangle was groan worthy... I will say from what I remember, at least they added a little color.

Interestingly, that 'Instagram filter racially ambiguous completely symmetrical thirty something' looking face has gone out of fashion by current beauty standards, so it immediately dates this film, even in present time.
