Best way to seal after applying the tape is to heat it with a hairdryer, then use a wall paper seam roller from the home improvement store. This allows you to apply firmer, even pressure all the way around the perimeter of the vapor barrier, with more pressure than your thumbs. Since I used this technique, I have never had anymore issues with water intrusion in many years. I bought the butyl tape from the BMW dealer, but I am told it is a 3M product and available for 1/3rd the cost at any automotive paint supply store.

Thanks for sharing that tip David! I can also recommend allowing the butyl tape box to sit in the warm sun for a bit before applying so it is warm. It depends on the temperature outside and time of year though. The hairdryer method might be a good idea in the colder months. The new butyl was quite supple and tacky though vs. the original stuff I removed from the door.

I've used Butyl tape in the past to reseal headlights, too, after replacing adjusters and projectors.

interesting, I haven't heard of that application before! I know BMW also sells a small strip of butyl for a center support bearing application

Great informative video, I don’t comment often on TH-cam but this guy does a great job of anything he reviews/explains.

Lol poor shmuck here. My window regulator failed and previously i brought it to a Bmw independent shop to fix water leaks and to my surprise after opening up the panel to fix win. reg. they patched it with silicoln sealant. Rediculous how indie shops are.
