    About David Bowie:
    David Bowie redefined musical genres and the potential of live performance for generations of music lovers. Creating and discarding a variety of personae and restlessly challenging musical boundaries, Bowie released timeless albums including Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust…, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Station to Station, "Heroes,” Let's Dance, Heathen, The Next Day and many more. Blackstar, Bowie’s 28th and final studio album, was released on his 69th birthday, January 8, 2016. David Bowie died on January 10, 2016, two days after the release of Blackstar. His body of work, his influence on the worlds of music, art, fashion, film, theatre and beyond, and his legacy of innovation and reinvention will live forever. 2022 kicks off with Bowie at 75, a celebration of his 75th birthday with the Brilliant Adventure box set, the previously unreleased Toy, the 50th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust and a series of special events.

    i like the drums on this as it doesn't overshadow the song while the horns just feel more organic. while i still have a fondness for the original yet this is still an incredible version.

      I think the drums are well engineered but they sit too low in the mix. They kind of disappear between the other instruments...

    Nice to hear the real horns back in the mix. But I'm missing the Frampton solo... glad they used the final verse version (My cassette I bought on April 20th, 1987 featured the *radio edit* only).
    Might be the only mix on this project that falls slightly short of the original version.

      The solo on this song apparently wasn't played by Frampton, but by Sid McGinnis.

    Anyone hearing this for the first time, check the "1999 Remastered (original)" version. If you are learning about recording/producing it's a good example of someone getting their hands on greatness... and killing it 30 years later.

      @rbennettmusictube 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Sorry, Mr. Know It All here didn't clarify - the 1999 remaster is the original album which I prefer over the new remixes. Bowie did not give every song the same feel, the same tempo. The remix makes it all generic.

    Weird, was kind of hoping they'd stick to the original arrangement and just make it sound more organic. I miss the piano in the bridge and Frampton's guitar. Not my favourite reworking, I feel like the "million things at once" aspect of the production was one of the few real charms of the original album.

    It's a well known fact that Bowie and Visconti put some of the instruments WITH their effects down on tape because THAT'S how that particular instrument should sound like (be it drums or guitars, whatever) - this version without the punchy gated reverb drums really just sounds so weak....
    why tamper with that album and not just leave it as postcard of where Bowie was at the time? (going through a post-Tin Machine crisis)
    The Zeroes however, sounds better, like a demo from Hunky Dory....

  • @thinkbigreunion

    Despite this commercial peak, Let’s Dance began a chapter of creative deficiency for Bowie, wherein he fell out of love with his art. He later looked back on this period with intense disdain, with his duo of following albums, 1984’s Tonight and 1987’s Never Let Me Down, the two he hated most from his extensive career. Reflecting negatively on this era, he described it as his “Phil Collins years”.
    Although Bowie thought Tonight did have some redeemable aspects, it was its successor, Never Let Me Down, that the singer loathed more than any other release. He went as far as to describe it as his lowest artistic moment and even the “nadir” of his entire career. Bowie said: “My nadir was Never Let Me Down. It was such an awful album.”

    This album has long been considered Bowie's worst, for good reason. Bowie lacked inspiration when he composed the songs and has stated in interviews that he was disconnected from his muse during that period. This re-arrangement is interesting, but it can't escape the reality that the compositions aren't particularly noteworthy. The songs have deeper problems than how they are mixed/arranged.
