This is how I beat the Cheato page rematch race. Figured that out through experimentation because I had nothing better to do with my life at the time. Otherwise that race will take years off of your life.

And yeah the way you tap the button is completely up to personal preference so it's a good idea to experiment.

I found this trick out because I played the legendary starfy on my ds. At that moment, I probably could push the button 8-10 times a second. Now, I can push 12 to 13 times a second.
I personally move the controller up and down with my left hand while pressing the button with my right. I try to keep the motion very short so it's almost like a vibration. To do that you use your entire right arm so it gets a bit tiring
