Nice combo! For me, I get Tai Ho and Yam Koo. Their unite 3x damage unite is a beast (I think the strongest unite in the game since it's only the two of them so you have another char slot vacant). I put Turtle runes on both of them so they don't get unbalanced and I can spam the shit out of their unite. Valerie's Falcon rune is also spammable and can deal a lot of damage when you gear her well and max out her weapon. I put skill and luck rune pieces on Flik whenever I can so he crits a lot. He can dish a lot of damage by just doing that. I give him the flowing rune just for emergency healing. Lastly, Viktor with the double strike rune. I get everyone the best equipment and max out their weapons. Boss fight ends pretty quick! Just sharing my set up!
+Ian Lee yes, any combination of x3 damage characters would be good for battle. But most of those choices don't include the Holy rune which let the party run faster.

For some strange reason a lot of great franchises progressively get worse as the series within them continue on in some form. Suikoden, Grandia, Breath of Fire. All great games in their initial installments but get lost after their third release or so. Many say Suikoden 2 is the best in the series. It's the first one for me. Never an adrenaline in a battle system like this. And the music just intensifies it all around. Solid game that many haven't played.
Why do you think breath of fire got worse? In my opinion, breath of fire got better with each game, probably peaking at 4, with dragon quarter being quite good if you have the right mindset for it.
Yeah, 2 is definitely the best. I cried the 1st time I got the bad ending although I had recruited 109 characters in my 1st play through. Not sure why, I thought it's because Nanami level was too low when she took the shot in Rockaxe castle/
I like using the unite Pretty Boy Attack from Flik, Alen, and Grenseal. Not as much DPS as the kobolds but it's nice too. Plus they have nice runes on them.
I'm sorry but I am a sucker for runes and magic lol, so I used Tir and the SE Rune (ofc), Flik with the Thunder Rune, Cleo with the Mother Earth Rune, Crowley with the Cyclone Rune, Tengaar with the Flowing Rune and finally Viktor with the Clone Rune. It was rather easy, but I loved this game!
Late to the party, but I absolutely love your Suikoden videos. Unites are honestly the most fun way to build parties in S1 IMO, of course magic is still powerful but with the single rune slot limit, it's more interesting and rewarding to build your party around Unites (and around runes in S2). That's why my only complaint with S1 is how often characters are forced into your party; you rarely have true freedom to experiment with great Unites like Varkas/Sydonia or the Ninja attack (Fuma is meh, but Kage is a solid and interesting character; it's a shame the game never gives you a reason to use him more). Or even the Pirate attack (Anji/Kanak/Leonardo are all respectable characters; none of them are mages, but Kanak's speed will ensure their unite procs before enemies can act, and they give you three open rune slots to play around with non-magic runes). And of course, there's the legendary Kobold +1, which shines so well in the final battle :) Anyway, if you still keep up with this channel, thanks for the vids! I especially like how you thought to use the elemental pieces to exploit bosses' weaknesses, very clever and so obvious I can't believe I never thought of it!

Does elemental rune piece ignore enemy resistance/invulnerability against said element? Because I see that Viktor deal normal damage to the Left head, which is supposed to be invulnerable to fire.
that's correct, it deals normal damage to resisted/immune targets while it deals extra damage to the enemies which have that elemental weakness. Rune pieces are plainly awesome.
My final party in Suikoden I was Viktor,Flik,Pesmerga and in the back row Tir,Luc,Crowley(sometimes Rubi) and final party in Suikoden II was Viktor,Pesmerga,Georg Prime and in the back row Riou,Luc,Tir(sometimes Rina, sometimes Mazus,sometimes Killey,sometimes Chaco and Sid)
Pahn Ronnie unite isn't a reliable source of damage because Pahn will become unbalance after that, so you waste his damage potential. This Kobold unite can be spammed every turn for 3x damage of the all participants.
well, i'm not really his fan in a way. I'm more likely a fan of power gaming that's why I like every strong/useful characters and despise any weak chars even if they are pretty or interesting...

I like to use pretty girl unite attack in every Suikoden.
