100% spot on. Another reason to track with compression is if you're dealing with a vocalist who has agressive dynamics, poor vocal control and vocal harshness...good quality preamps and compressors can help mask those bad frequencies and minimize stress later when mixing.
Also minimizes the stress +during+ while +singing+. Every singer gives a more confident performance when they're confident about the way their voice sounds in their ears.

As a former artist who mixed their own music, I did this out of necessity. The less time I took mixing and mastering later, the more time I had to focus on writing good music. I'm a HUGE fan of recording into plugins. I set up an aux track in protools that takes in the mic input and plugins I want and busses out to an audio track that records the input. Wayyy less headache later in life. Once you realize the greatest have always done it. The only scary thing is that you can't fix it. GOOD!!! It should force you to focus on getting it right the first time lol. Great video brother!

@xavierreid9995 I don’t use unison ever. I only print what’s on the inserts or if I’m not using the console I use the option to record post effect in FL and I don’t gain stage plugins when tracking I only look at what I want to hit on my meter

I been doing it this way for many years. I want my vocals clean before they even touch a track. Less work on the back end. This ensures my vocals are the same everytime I record them.
I ALWAYS track vocals with a lil eq and compression. Learned on the SSL in your pic back in my Death Row Records days and have taken all that ear knowledge to be completely in box now, with 99.99% of the same sound...gotta use those ears my peeps!
I actually see a lot of wisdom here. I personally have a potato for a computer, and cpu processing is a real issue for me. Sometimes, I'm often a plugin away from my project lagging. Essentially, if I just print the fundamentals (eq, compression, etc) and let that be my initial main focus, to get a proper print, than I can have the foresight to have no wasted movement. My vocals will be properly printed, and I can simply add on to the print after removing the plugins that I'll essentially no longer need. I really feel like implementing this will streamline my process. Thanks!

Also I don't have a good room to record in so I always have background noise so my printing is more of taking out the background noise and then I mix I like how it sounds but my problem is I'm too loud or too quiet it just don't sit right in the mix
I just got the Presonus quantum ES4. The auto gain function saved my life. I could never get my tracking levels right, I've heard people say set it for 10-30 Dbs. At that gain i was still boosting with preamp plugins and compressing hard just to be able to hear myself. When I let the es4 interface set the gain it landed on 42 Dbs. Now I can hear myself clearly and any plugins i use, are used for their intended purpose instead of justa volume increase. I use studio one which allowd inserts on the mic input channel, lately I've put NS1, UAD1073, and tube tech CL 1B in the mic channel to print while tracking. I'm still experimenting with my vocal bus chain, but it sounds so good withy simple recording chain that a talented vocalist takes sound 90% done. I've never gone to school for audio engineering but i'm getting close to radio ready sounds.
Yeah it doesn’t take much once you realize it’s not as hard as people make it seem but keep experimenting because once you get the recording chain down and get it almost there with recording , your mixing will become easier and faster.

Because you say that printing is the reason people buy the Apollo, to be able to record in hotel rooms and such. But isn’t that applicable to any interface? Or did you say Apollo because it has some distinct printing feature?
There’s a work around for it that most ppl don’t know about but depending on certain plugins you don’t need it especially because they make native plugins now

hey great video again jordxan! i just got my first condenser mic and audio interface and i want to start music but with that being said i was wondering if you would be able to do like a 4-5 part series on recording vocals(pre-recorded for u to save time) and mixing for beginners. so like in each video u could go over 1 aspect like EQ then next video Compressor etc. it would be a good series for newbies to watch.

Speaking of mixing boards they have a mixer that has Antares autotune in it it’s called the PV 10 AT MIXER it’s made by peavy. You should check it out sometime or see if they will let you borrow one to make a video on. Theirs not a lot of info on it or videos. Nobody’s showing the REAL way how to use it like you would. Also side note not trying to go off topic theirs also a pedal board head rush prime/core that has Antares autotune built into it. You can even use humanize and all the effects and settings like the computer version it’s crazy

When you record through plugins like you would do in a professional studio or any studio with analog gear. And in a studio the gear is stuck on the vocal and if you print through a plugin it’ll be stuck on the vocal giving you a way better vocal to work with before you mix so mixing won’t be as hard

What exactly is "printing" like what does that mean??
When you record through plugins like you would do in a professional studio or any studio with analog gear. And in a studio the gear is stuck on the vocal and if you print through a plugin it’ll be stuck on the vocal giving you a way better vocal to work with before you mix so mixing won’t be as hard

@@SKYJORDXN honestly that really common these days because of people who are trying to make quick money off needy musicians I used to say I don't need education for mixing I got internet 4 years I still had rubbish mixed i went to uni i did a sound engineering degree for 4yr now i work in the studio and at live events no one is gonna trust you with an expensive PA system because u watched TH-camrs saying how too the insurance wont pay it up

I try my best to keep everything transparent and let ppl know that the type of vocals they want are usually 80% recorded
i still will never understand compressors
