The only U18 times faster than this is the 31 year old 1:57.18 time recorded by Yuan Wang of China in Beijing in 1993. That was in a meeting that produced an astonishing 11 Asian records, and 3 world records by Chinese women. Yuan Wang was never to come remotely near this performance, and disappeared from athletics after 1994. The third on the U18 list (just behind Pheobe Gill's time) was the 58.16 recorded by Na Ling in 1997 in Beijing. She had never beaten 2 minutes before or after that 1997 meeting. I will let others come to their conclusions over that unusual pattern of one-off performances at a particular meet. If we then go to #4 on the list, then that's the 1:59.18 by Mary Cain in 2013. That is 1.65 seconds slower than Phoebe's time. That is, maybe, a rather better measure of her performance compared to others of her age range. It is simply astonishing. nb. since this race, Phoebe has run another fast time below the Olympic qualifying time, cruising in to win at 1:58.08 seconds. She is apparently forgoing an opportunity to go for the European Athletics Championships in order to concentrate on her school examinations. She should, however, be trying for a place in the British Paris Olympics team, and that's going to be very heavily contested.
Thanks for the feedback! The time mentioned was a 4:11 from 2023 when Phoebe was still in the under 17 age group but she recently ran a new personal best of 4:05
Makes me wonder what happened to Jo White. This was an excellent run by Phoebe, but it will raise the expectation of her fans, So she must learn to blank that out, and just do her own thing. Max Burgin was breaking junior records, but has found it difficult to translate that into his senior career, but he still has time on his side to get a meddle or two. But if your quick enough , your old enough, and if she gets in the GB team ,she can learn a lot this year.
@@jensmith3719 Yes i know, thrombosis is a serious illness. But besides that , Max seems a bit fragile. I find myself worrying for him. like an over protective parent.

This may sound pathetic, but I never trusted the times of the East German or Russian women's times back then. There were so many allegations swirling around those athletes that I became pretty doubting.

In fact, there are simply No words for this performance !!

She’s going to Paris after winning the UK trial at 17 years of age, amazing. Keely Hodgkinson ran in the 400 as she already has her place in the 800.
