Excellent thoughts my friend. I especially like this statement you made: "What tends to happen when someone encounters a problem is they don't try and solve the problem but look for external advice." Such a great observation. Tips and advice may point you in a general direction but don't necessarily address what you are specifically doing.

Been there done that, having painted for over 20 years the highs and lows come, not regularly but often enough, and I changed the subject I am painting from landscape to flowers to animals and birds to buildings. It keeps the mind going and the subject fresh which leads to a wide selection of paintings to draw from in the future when things stop working for me.

Whenever I come back after a break, I always paint a painting using a "Master's" painting. Either Watercolor or Oils. By having a master work to copy this helps me get my confidence back after my last fail(s). Sargent, Monet, Van Gogh, etc. We can freely paint their paintings now (100+ years). I never sell my work, I give it away so I never need to worry about a copyright infringement. I am working on Van Gogh's "Wheat Field with Cypress" currently (oil). What a genius he was!
Paint like a Master until your confidence comes back then move forward with your own work!

Wow, this is exactly what I needed to hear this morning. I had a totally awful painting yesterday and I let it set me back to that frustrated/negative head space with watercolor. I was on such a roll combining techniques (finally!) and feeling more connected to each piece, so it was extremely disappointing. I'm going to try again today. Thanks for making this Liron-- I really do value your advice!

I find not having a clear vision of how I want a painting to look is a problem for me. When I do have a clear vision I lose focus as I proceed through the painting. Losing focus causes me to have to react to what I have painted to salvage the painting. However giving up is not an option.😆

Great advice and insight, as always. People give up on things for many reasons, I myself have experienced this too. Sometimes we just find that "we drop the ball" at some point, usually due to other things going on and forgetting why we started. Having started something, the way to improve and get further enjoyment, albeit struggling often, is to CONTINUE. The continuation can be as often and as deep as you can make it, or just keep your hand in. I go through periods, often weeks go by, without painting. However, I never feel like I can leave it for too long without doing something about it.
For me, and perhaps for others too, we can waste too much time watching TH-cam videos about painting instead of just painting! A video now and again is great, books too, workshops - online or in-person are superb to give yourself a creative boost. The worst thing we can do is compare our efforts to others in a way that holds us back. Our own expectations can also be a hinderance too. So let go of these two false notions and just enjoy the painting experience, it will take you on a journey, hopefully a lifelong journey. The results, whatever they may be, will evolve naturally over time. Be patient and appreciate the fact that we are even able to obtain the materials in order to paint. As Bruce Lee once said: "be like water, my friend" - go with the flow. This is why I love watercolour. Find out why you LOVE IT and let that be your guide and inspiration.

Thank you Liron, as always the wisdom speaks through you💚 I would add to this: periods of not painting are ok, it doesn't matter how long, breaks are nice to clear the idea of painting and watercolor for oneself; paintings that are "not good" are necessary, they allow oneself to grow and learn from mistakes 💚 take care☺️

This is great advice at the right time! I just decided to put away about 5 paintings that aren't going the way I want. I spontaneously started a new one, just like you said, without expectations. It turned out great - motivation is back! You're exactly right, having too much attention on a very specific outcome can be defeating. I guess I stumbled on the same method you just explained so clearly. Thanks for sharing this and confirming I'm on the right track!

I'm a digital freelance artist and when I'm about to give up (for whatever reason) I just force myself to take a break from my usual art routine and I go to the paper sketchbook. I just start experimenting with traditional meduim and search for different subjects - as I usually draw characters, I start to draw or paint animals, architecture, landscapes or anything that inspires me.
So, I think, it is a great practice, because it refreshes your creativity and it resets your mind in some way. This is what I love with all my heart about art - there are infinite art paths and you can switch them at any time. Also, when you come back to your regular art routine, you will be stronger as an artist.

I mostly like paintings of other people more than mine, that's a reason to give up for me. (i mean thinking that i am too bad and wasting time )
And that i learn slowly, so many things i can't paint, well, sorry for sounding so depressive.
What i hate is my disappointment... Well "wrong" "peculiar" "ugly" "not to recognize" i am thinking all the time. At the end i like it sometimes, but hate all the negative feelings i had. At the time i get advice in a watercolor course, but if I am on my own i will try.... and it can go in an ugly direction, where i don't find out.
Then i go on or try it again, but still i have trouble to be satisfied with my results. Mostly i like some things like the colours or the the shapes or the perspective or... but not the whole thing. Or i get lost in experiments which i enjoy, but they don't have direct results in a painting.

I don’t think I could ever give up. I love watercolor so much. And I definitely can’t consider myself even an artist. Although as I look at my work sometimes I don’t see improvement. But once in a great while I create what I think is absolutely a masterpiece. And I’ve figured out how to scrub off the paint in a spot & correct it and I’m so happy I can do that instead of throwing it away. But I’ve been doing this a lot longer than you, Lyron. I think you’re a great artist.

    • @LironYan
      @LironYan 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The place to start is exploring why you want to paint in in the first place (:
Let me tell you one thing I realize as time goes on - results are a very poor motivator for creating.
In other words, wanting a “good result”, or an accurate painting etc… these don’t tend to create desire / motivation for most people (though they do for some).
There’s a very real motivation to paint, that goes far beyond that. It may be worth finding that 🙏🏼
Keep me posted and wishing you a speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹

Great video as always! I tend to lean in the opposite direction where I get hyperfixated on trying to solve a problem on my own and completely forget that I might be able to find help from an external source, lol. I find that I go through periodic bouts of frustration with my art especially after finishing a couple projects that I'm extra happy with. The solution for me is also to just do some stuff solely for the fun of it rather than trying to work on any particular technique or with a particular goal in mind.

I find this quite inspiring in a sense.
Its kinda reassuring to know that those who have mastered the art of watercolor (at least from my perspective), still "struggle" to find themselves satisfied with their results sometimes.
I´m a beginner, like extremely new to watercolors (less than 2 months); but been drawing and sketching my whole life in other mediums. A few months ago I got caught up in some watercolors videos, including yours, and couldnt stop watching...so I bought some watercolors and a couple brushes and decided to give it a go.
I´m not good at all, cant even say that I have a handle of basic technique, but I´m having a blast just painting. I honestly dont care that much about the result, just enjoy doing it.
And I´m definitly planning on buying some of your courses soon, and maybe look up some others to get a good grasp of the basics at least.
    Keep inspiring us!

Reasons why i wanted to give up watercolour are:
    # unable to manage multiple media, # ugly results when i know i never practiced those subjects before, # oils and pastels are easy and calling me than watercolour, # the commercial thinking( maybe will be sold out less than oils), # too much thinking involved at every step in watercolor as its unforgivable, # people response to my other media and to watercolour...Now..what made me continue? Time management, practicing each aspect of watercolour separately, ignoring people and seeing long learning curve of many artists..also i dont give up challenges easily. However im still thinking too much during watercolour which cant help😊

I'm sorry to hear that you are frustrated. There could be a lot things going on with your painting, and I'll try not to hazard any guesses. But I think it may be helpful to realize there are no bad colors. You can't make a single bad color if you tried. They only begin to look less right in relation to other colors. Realizing this I think could help give you some more confidence and perhaps a starting point to testing what makes a group of colors go wrong and what makes another group go right.

Michele (one of my TH-cam teachers) said, you always learn something, if you finish something; even if you’re not happy with the results. So sometimes, a project does not go as planned (do any of them, really ?). But, by finishing until the end, you will have had an art lesson for the next time. Sometimes, the blocks are truly hurdles…….So doodle for a couple of hours to redirect your thoughts. Then face your stuck project again with renewed interest.
