Looking to those nifty hood straps, good alternative. The main purpose of the stern straps is to keep the boat on the roof in case you have to stop suddenly. I have moved the canoe forward until the bow is way forward and the stern lines will have minimal extension in the event there is an opportunity for it to come forward.
A great alternative for the bow a d sterns are the factory recovery tow fish eye bolts. Most cars have it in the trunk and it screws in via a removable door on the front and rear bumpers.
This video helped a lot, just got a canoe and I had to stop 12 times on a 1 hour trip to tighten up the straps no matter how much I tightened the straps they still kept coming undone, almost bent the cross bars on the roof of my 4Runner and still no luck, I’m glad I watched this it saved me about 40 minutes of work on the ride home
I like the innovative style of the under hood mounts. I just know that the car was never designed with them in mind. As long as you are triple sure the hood is secure and the front lines aren't too tight I guess they would be okay. There are tow hook points underneath the car. They aren't always easy to find, but the advantage in front is you don't have to worry if the hood is going to come up as you're driving down the road. I had it happen to me on the freeway, not something you want to ever happen even once.
No, the reason being this attachment point is only finger tight to prevent the boat from left/right movement. The real hold down points where all the pressure is will be the crossbars.
In all honesty it is not "necessary" to tie down the bow or stern. But if you are going to do one you should do both. It is a backup in case a trap fails or an accident.
the tbar straps that fit under hood are here www.thule.com/en-us/winter-and-water-sports-carriers/kayak-roof-rack-accessories/thule-quick-loop-strap-_-530999
I turned off the sound, you should too! Good job on the end ties, although less is often more, as far as using 4 single lines that are more secure than many knots which may slip.
Thank you for the video! The most helpful and clear guide I have come across.
Thank you! Awesome information for a beginner kayaker like myself. Your vibe is so positive and encouraging. Bravo, man.
This looks great but what is the name of the little blockers? Tuber? Can't understand you.
I just had the most nerve wracking drive home with my new kayak. Thought I was gonna have a heart attack lol. Thank you for this
love the T bars for under the bonnet and boot , A perfect idea
Great explanation, thanks. Got my canoe downs figured out thanks to this. PS. Amazon has the adaptor straps that go under the car hood.
Can you give a link to them please?
What are they called? I'm on Amazon but can't figure out how to search it.
Under hood tie down loop worked for me, but hood loop and quick hood loop also were listed, hope you found what you were looking for!
Watched again this season for a refresher. Never trust a buckle!!!

Thank you so much! Picking up my canoe on Friday, and having no tie down points was going to be an issue.
how smart guy. Thank you, your video is great help for me.
Thanks a lot!
Super helpful. Thanks man!
Great advice for a VW owner, thanks cheers
Great video.
Very secure. Glad you mentioned the visibility issue. Not a fan of that part, but it's a necessity I guess. Good info.
Thanks. Just bought my first canoe snd was unsure how to tie it down safely on the car.
Glad it helped!
This helped a lot! Thanks
And if you don't have a roof rack?

Sweet! Thanks, Brother.
Any danger of popping the hood if you put too much tension on the t-bars?
No, the reason being this attachment point is only finger tight to prevent the boat from left/right movement. The real hold down points where all the pressure is will be the crossbars.
Is it necesary both loops, front and rear? I mean, could it be only the top thule straps?

Can you add the part number for the T Bar? I can't find them anywhere. Thank you!
I just bought these last week and they're super strong. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0024AVPO4/

I am not sure knots are sufficient
I would recommend you learn if you car has a metal hood or not. For example my Nissan does not and would crack the hood. Just fyi guys
