I love this scene, the aliens laying waste to the city with those wingtip blasters, the fires, the buildings exploding and collapsing, awesome special effects.
@@ChaodeknoiChomson This would have really been something to see back then, especially after the world had just crawled out of WW2 ! Suddenly there's an enemy you can't actually defeat !
My God! I just love this movie so much!!!! Awesome stuff!!!! The war machines were so visual and intimidating!!!! I love the sequel TV series from late 80s too.
I bet news anchor Brian Williams saw bodies floating down the Thames river as he covered the Martian invasion and rumor has it that a Martian laser beam almost brought down his helicopter. What a great hero Williams is for covering this story
Amazing effects and the laser sounds are outstanding to listen to. This is top notch science fiction classic. Perfect example of the invaders from mars trope
@@KlunkerRider The wing tip "skeleton beams" got the sound from striking a hammer against a high tension cable; used in Star Trek, etc. The sparking ray's sound resulted from 3 electric guitars (brand?) recorded simultaneously, then played backwards. The thrumming heard before the priest gets zapped was a conventional cello played by a musician. Sounds in WOW53 are craft work! They matched the visual action and were delayed a fraction of a second when distant. Nominated for sound editing Oscar.
WOW! Mr. David Dixon, that's actually really interesting & wonderful to know, thanks for the information about the sound effects of the martian arsenal & weaponry.
So much was in the staging and sound editing. The malevolent grace of the advancing Martians, the distant explosions, the abandoned streets. Lots of creativity and craft.
Opening scene here, if my LA geography serves me well, would be the Martians strolling up 1st street after coming through East LA. That would fit the movie narrative having the Martians moving into the city from the wilds of the Puente Hills.
I prefer these practical effects over CGI. It looks more realistic and the buildings collapse according to the law of physics and not according to some clueless CGI artist.
I do, and I don't. The practical, and special, effects in this film have held up very well I'm happy to say. But there are other 1950s film which look so bad now that the best we can say of them is that, 'well they're, er, um, charming'. There is a place for CGI, but it should not be used just for the sake of it, and I think practical effects should be used instead if they can be done well. Some of the CGI on the war machines in the Tom Cruise version looks visually stunning because CGI's been done and used well, and that does add something to the film. But not quite enough to compensate for its 'Tom Cruise family pycho-drama' flaws IMO...
They blew up the Daily Planet building ( The Adventures of Superman.) Shows the same building at the beginning of the show, " Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound!" scene. Actually the Los Angeles city hall building. In this case a scale model. Pretty good FX for a 1953 movie.

Simply put - vaporizing rays - one with heat (orange can start fires) and one without (green). Human (loose equivalent) imagine a tank, a great cannon to blow things up or punch through and a machine gun for smaller hitting. The Martians may have developed one before the other, (I have thought about this) like the heat ray first, then thought we need something similar that will vaporize the same way without starting fires (green rays). Human equivalent, development of ammunition, from simple lead balls to later - a massive variety including incendiary rounds (that can start fires potentially).
This is getting a ton of attention now considering the US government now admits the existence of ufos and is now proving they have a new Pentagon department investigating it.

For a 1950s sci-fi movie, these special effects are really good.
The Sound effects were just a pure masterpiece, terrifying. PWOWOWOWWOW.
Outstanding Film!! Still stands the test of time and truly set the standards and inspired so many SciFi movies that came after!!
For a 1953 movie the effects are outstanding and the space craft could be modern in a movie today

Those two different sound effects for the two weapons, so very cool.

I just love the sound of the lasers I heard that it was a guitar in reverse
Actually it was from a high tension guy wire on a telephone pole being hit with an iron rod then augmented thru sound equipment.
