    Our llama was formerly a guard llama for the Navajo Sheep Project. He quickly adopted our flock of free range chickens (Their main purpose is fly control around our horses. The eggs are a bonus!). He is quick to let me know if a skunk, raccoon, or mink shows up on the property during the night. He's pretty much dumb as a post otherwise, but he's saved the lives of a lot of chickens, ducks, and geese. Now if I could just get him to stop triggering on the muskrats, too.

    Great idea and how wonderful to see free range chickens. They are spread over a large area but the Alpacas seem to have everything under control.....

    Never work around here since the alpaca farms have to have donkeys and dogs protect them from coyotes and bobcats and of course the fox stay away too. We are lucky in not have mountain lions here, only a couple seen in this county over many years but if the return in numbers then we will retire the mammoth guard donk and get a big dog to live with the farm animals, unlike our farm dogs now that come in at night. Love the look of your farm and chooks.

    thanks for sharing. are they 2 castrated male alpacas? How long have the alpacas been with the chooks before they start defending them? Just want to understand if its a alpaca-chook bonding thing or if its simply alpacas chasing the foxes cos its their nature? nice vid mate!

    • @husufields
      @husufields ปีที่แล้ว

      They do not, alpacas are the last animals you want as a guardian. A llama was made to guard alpacas, alpacas were made to guard nothing, they need the guardianship. The same predators that could snatch up a chicken could easily injure an alpaca, who isn’t going to guard because it’s NOT a guard animal!
      I’m assuming by the age of the video that that fellow didn’t know this, but hopefully he does now.

      That’s why I encourage a few Great Pyrenees dogs in addition to llamas and alpaca. Great Pyrs are amazing guard dogs and a pack will protect from a cougar as well as a single shepherd. Again I’m sorry for your loss.

    bruh aplacas are small animals , they shouldn't be used as farm guards. if you want a proper guard you should get a lama not a aplaca.

  • @bradsimpson8724
    @bradsimpson8724 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is fairly misleading. The alpacas aren't guarding the chickens, they're just sharing the space. They aren't on the lookout for aerial predators, nor will they run off smaller predators, like skunks or weasels or raccoons. They just don't like canids.
    If you want an animal to truly protect your flock, you should have a dog. If dogs are not an option because you don't want to diversify your feed bill or you don't want to train a dog to work around birds, your best bet will be a goose or a rooster. They are far more susceptible to the same predators as your chickens, and therefore will be on the lookout for them and raise an alarm when they see them. If you put your birds into a secure coop at night, and have them with a dog/rooster/goose while they're ranging, then you're covered.
    It's nice to see alpacas grazing with chickens, but keep in mind that's all they're doing. Don't go get an alpaca for your chickens thinking that it's actually interested in protecting them.
