  • Engine build series following the build of a Ducati Testastretta 749 engine from a collection of parts
In this episode I fit the engine head bolts which will allow us to fit the cylinders and heads, I also build up the vertical head and take the shim clearances
I have tried to reduce the amount of talking in this video, hope it works better :)
I have only focused on the 1 head to stop it being repetitive and hopefully a concise video
I also left out measuring the shims themselves as I covered this in Video 4 of the Thunderbike build series
This engine was fitted across the 996R, 998R, 749 and 999 range of bikes
The next videos will show the adding of the cylinders, fitting the heads, fitting of all the side covers before fitting and setting up the new belts

I don't have to take off the rocker arms, on my 03 model 999, to change shims.
by doing this job on a complet engine, be ware of not loosing valves into the sylinder. Keep the piston in TDC. Can also hold the valve with an angeled tool trough the spark plug hole.

Good tips, you are right that you don't need to take the rocker arms off, its just easier for access when the engine is out of the bike.

Testaretta heads look much easier to work on than the Desmotrinic heads I have a 2000 748 I spent ages doing the clearances only to find I didn’t need to be as fussy as I was getting the clearances as spot on it was hours of trial end error as I didn’t have endless funds quite shocked at price of parts needed to rebuild the engine every bearing and rocker was shot but managed to get decent second Hand rockers . I gotta say there’s something about these Ducati’s that is addictive maybe the looks and sounds , finding your videos extremely addictive looking at your bikes etc is the feeling a child gets in a sweet shop keep up the good work stay safe .

      Hi Vince,
The testastretta heads where a massive leap forward for Ducati both in terms of performance and maintainability.
I have to agree the prices can rack up for the engine rebuild especially if you are using Ducati parts but with a little research can find most parts direct from the same suppliers Ducati use at lower prices 😎
I like my motorcycle based sweet shop, feel the need for more Ducati's 🤣🤣🤣

Just wondering if a ducati 999 engine will drop into a ducati 749 dark frame.

Yes, the 999 engine will drop straight in, just need the bigger throttle bodies, everything else can remain the same, then retune the ECU to match the engine 😎

DesmoWerx Have you made your excel sheet available? It would be helpful doing my clearances on my XDS. Also, what Ducati special tools did you use in this video?

did you mistype 749 instead of 748? BTW, I've got a pair of 749s ported and polished heads but don't have the top covers. Long story but I originally bought from a seller in eBay. If you know how to machine or match spare parts you have for it, I can make a deal with you. I bought it for $600. In addition, the tech that originally saw the part I had bought said it'll work with the existing cover I had on my 749. long story short, I'm not going to that shop anymore.

      Hi Gnarly,
Its a 748cc capacity engine but used in a Ducati 749 hence commonly referred to as a 749 engine.

at 6:24 it looks like there's a chip out of that intake valve.

    • @DesmoWerx

It looks that way but the valves were okay, must be due to camera and lighting making it look that way in the light.
