The Greek Civil War began around the end of WWII, with early conflicts happening prior to its end, and the Civil War proper starting in 1946. It continued on until 1949 and primarily involved the Greek military, who were largely royalist, and the Greek Communist Party.
To Western governments like Great Britain and the US, and Eastern European Balkan governments, the conflict was a key crux point in the struggle between Capitalism and Communism. And thus, they all had their hands in there- although, to the Greeks, it was primarily a Greek struggle.
Interestingly, the Soviet Union denied involvement in the conflict, and seemed to adhere to agreements with NATO not to intervene, and the Soviet-Yugoslav split seems to reinforce this. The US intervention, however, seems to suggest they thought this was a struggle not only against Communism, but against the Soviets themselves!

fun fact: the USSR promised aiding the communists yet made a deal in 1943 that greece would join the west
Yep, the moment you realize that USSR was just like america - with a red paint and hammer/sickle
The reason they lost
@@supermanpapastalin not really lmao, if it was the reason then there would be no america
@@germanempire8678 the USSR collapsed from within the fuck you mean, no slavic empire has ever been defeated by external forces, it's always either the leadership or the people that end it, the cold war was a series of proxy wars, not the US fighting the USSR head to head, hell the US never had plans of invading the Soviets, only fending off a soviet invasion
@@germanempire8678 people dont like this idiology then that random guy came to power and let all warsaw pact get independen
This was one of the very first, yet most overlooked scenarios regarding the Cold War. And still, as insignificant as it might sound for some out there, a communist victory in the Greek Civil War could've very well been a huge factor that would have consequently changed the course of the conflict as a whole, at least in the European theater.
@Safwaan Exactly. There's one point.
Another one: The entirety of the Balkans would be composed of communist countries and therefore, it'd be much more difficult for the US to place missiles whose positions would be close enough to threaten the integral territory of the USSR itself.
what this was 1 hour ago? This vid was 48 minutes ago
@@Moonlight-np6rn People can still comment on videos before they premiere.
@Safwaan it would have encouraged the soviets to push for a communist Turkey, at least. The Russians always wanted to control the Bosporus.
@Safwaan India has a socialist history, but they would have been a good target. I agree. They were already somewhat friendly with them. They just never went all in.
Greece control thousands of islands in the Aegean Sea. If we went communist, first I doubt we would be "friends" with the Soviets, and they would want to put bases on those islands. To get around Turkey and the Strait. NATO would be forced to loosen control in the Bosporus or likely risk a conflict. I also do not see NATO give up Turkey without a fight. That would likely start WW3.

I find it interesting how the Greek Civil War was the only actual conflict that Yugoslavia actively sent volunteers to before they became non-aligned in the Cold War.

Tito especially wanted to take northern greece to get access to the Aegean, it was his plan to "unify" the whole balkans
@@EleutheriaSousouriES all barbarians crave Hellenic lands but non shall have them
@@DimitriHellas golden dawn?
@@matija5134 hes talking about Yugoslavia's ambitions. The Greek communists had promised Macedonia to them in exchange for support. Yugoslavia was to benefit immensly from that war.
Tito had a Greater Yugoslavia vision getting Thrace and Aegean Macedonia, awarding Albania for some Kosovo land and Bulgaria Thrace. It would have been a balkan superstate and having Greece as close communist allies would further increase their strenght.

This channel is just amazing, not only because of it's good quality jokes in it's videos that involve geopolitics and historical events, but also because it innovates in several features of it's countryballs; Mr Spherical introduced Among Us-style hands (limbs never worked), mouths (which in traditional Polandball comics looked weird but have been used by certain channels that make countryballs videos with voices, notably Art's Animations before removing them), different spacing between the character's eyes and mouth, and good standard animation. I really appreciate these videos, espacially the first new feature, which I actually thoguht of prior to discovering this channel.

1:00 About USSR in the situation with Greece
At the end of WW2, Stalin asked the Allied powers if he could have 10% of party popularity in Greece.
The Allied powers reluctantly agreed, and through this the USSR ended up helping the communist revolution in Greece. So yeah the USSR did actually somewhat intervene with the situation in Greece.
The USSR itself didn't intervene in Greece at all due to the percentage agreements. As a matter of fact, Stalin urged the communists to just cope with the repression because he wouldn't be able to help if a big war started.
The countries that helped by sending supplies and ammunition were Bulgaria, Yugoslavia (until 1948) and Albania, as well as some other Eastern European countries (the terms of the agreements didn't apply to them)

Dude where did u get the music it is sick and I want to listen to it all day
The video is great but I want to point out that the 'communist' weren't communists they were called the democratic army and they also held elections meaning they weren't communists(but yes the communist party of Greece or KKE was on their side) and also the bordering socialist countries just supported and weren't involved in any conflict the only thing that they did to help the socialist rebels was to let them cross the border to there countries. The video is great though because you touched a usually untouched topic.
Communism is when no elections

They most certainly were communists. And it should be stated that the surrounding nations not only allowed them to set up military bases but they also allowed them to abduct children from Greece and indoctrinate them.
