I definitely think it would be time for Leorio to get his power up since the other three of the main cast have already essentially had their time to fill their story roles and reach the peak of their powers. Leorio meanwhile is the only one with insane potential left but having the guidance of a Zodiac and the pressure of the succession war would bring him to the spot of the next MC to focus on.
Leorio is not someone who wants to harm others. He wants to save people without discrimination. This is why I predict that his role in the dark continet will be to cure the calamities. Which are more like different kinds of diseases. He will either "heal" one of his friends who will be infected with one, or he will be the key factor for the downfall of the thing that is causing those calamities in the first place. This fits Leorio really well and gives him a good opportunity to shine without giving him a random power up that puts him on pair with the others

Early on I used to think our boy was protag but it was probably bias from how as a kid I thought the medical field had inflated prices and how I wanted to be a doctor. I also projected selfishness as a protection mechanism but when things got dangerous my body would betray me. As for Kurapika...the only way I see him beating a trained Tserrienich is by breaking his chain bows. He will place the world's safety over his vendetta with the Phantom Troupe but the clown will finish them off.
Leorio would probably get a massive power boost. But I doubt he will be the main Protagonist at the end of the Series. I think it would still be GON FREAKING FREECS.

Coming from a family of medical professionals 3 generations before me, I can totally see leorio becoming the OP sob he was meant to be while also having the "healing touch". Think battle medic but with nen. With the unification quality of his aura I'm betting there's gonna be a gag of a dark continent beast who turns into a pet when around leorio.
I think people tend to overlook that leorio isn’t even trying to be a fighter or anything of the sorts yet still passed the hunter exam, an exam that world class athletes can’t pass…. Just to be a doctor. Leorio has probably the most potential out of everyone. It’s just that he isn’t focused on gaining strength.

Leorio's ability is pretty much Knov's ability but more efficient and focused. Better suited for 1v1 combat. Portal making super powers is a lot more broken than people think. It's virtually a steroid boost for your speed. You can stand still and fight while your opponent runs around dodging and looking for openings to ultimately get tagged with minimum effort or by their own attack
Leorio is such a Badass he is willing to risk his life to throw punch to one of the Strongest Hunter / Nen user for his Friend just to tell him that give Gon visit 😂
It would be insane and interesting if Leorio and the 4th Prince of Kakin had the same potential in Nen, being 1 in Billion Geniuses. The 4th Prince of Kakin is very smart or self image cultured Renaissance Man even if he is a Monster in Human Skin, but that hints thst Education a Prince could have and obsession. The differ is in personality and obsession, which 4th Prince of Kakin obsesses over Mastering Nen while Leorio obsession is to become a Doctor with Nen as hobby/skill he develops on the side.
While I believe Gyro is meant to be the big bad of the known world while the association and the Enpire are off on the Black Whale. I do think it's possible that Togashi might not go back to Gyro as he probably wants to wrap the story up within his lifetime. That being said in an ideal world he would have that set up as his true ending out of the three endings he mentioned. I do also believe Leorio is set up to be the future head of the association. His candle may not be as bright as the likes of Gon, Killua or Kurapika's but it'll certainly be burning far longer. Anyway, it all comes down to hen Togashi wants to and feels comfortable wrapping the story up. Because he can't keep writing it forever unfortunately. (Hiatuses or not)
if Killua is the foil of Gon, yet they are friends, then wouldn't Gyro be a better foil to Hisoka? If those two are foils of one another, then wouldn't Leorio's foil be Kurapika? The reason why is that Kurapika and Leorio are one and the same but very different. Leorio only wanted to be a Hunter to develop the resources to help humanity. Kurapika wanted to be a Hunter to generate the power to avenge his people, rather than humanity. Kurapika is mature in a lot of ways, but immature in the sense that he is spending his soul on avenging an already dead people. Leorio is immature in many ways, but mature in the sense that he would prefer to spend his soul on supporting the people who are still alive. As for Gyro and Hisoka, both desire power, but one is disassociated with people, as an enigma to help the story continue. In contrast, one is disassociated with people, as a true antagonist, to help the story continue and potentially end. Hisoka wants to see the potential he can overpower. Gyro wants to see humanity die out. The two are alike, however, they are different in the desires they have. It's likely Hisoka would find Gyro pitiful and probably disgusting, and Gyro would feel the same about Hisoka, who is a spitting image of what probably makes him despise humanity so much anyway.
There isn’t a chance he becomes the main protagonist in the story…. Ging is obviously the choice and the route the story is taking. He’s great comic relief though
