06:34 If Iceman’s family didn’t seem believable enough, it’s because you haven’t read enough coming out stories. To a gay man, the mom’s line “have you tried not being a mutant” feels far too real and the movie nailed the similarities perfectly.
sgm123 As far as I know that parallel was very intentional. But I think Logan has more of an issue with the little brother calling the cops. Which is pretty stupid you gotta admit.
"Have you tried not being a mutant?" Its a good way to show how some parents deal with their child being different. How they try to shape them to be something else.
I think the reason that Magneto moved the panels around was because they were set in "mutant mode". In the X-mansion, all the panels are there so you can find both humans and mutants. But some panels were missing in the dam, so they had to be rearranged to find humans.
Yes thats wut i was thinking. professor X cerebro room is full of panels to locate mutants and humans, rather than strikers who has em targeted to mutants but magneto changes em to humans...Geekvolution nailed this review but surprised he missed that.
I'm sure you may have gotten this already from someone else, but Magneto moving the panels was necessary. Stryker made Cerebro to only find and target Mutants. Magneto was moving the panels so that the machine could find and destroy humans.
The line, "Have you ever tried not being a Mutant?" Reminds me of the ignorance of people about homosexuality, by saying,"Have you tried not be gay?" or thinking they can just fix it. It all goes back to the idea of people will always fear what they don't understand and will do anything to get rid of what has become the norm.
I was watching this recently (amc has been showing it a lot) and I too couldn't understand why Jean got out of the jet. She could have very easily got them out of the there from inside. And while her "death" was a good way to get comic fans excited for her turning into the Phoenix in the next movie (why do I suddenly hear a ball dropping?) and that final shot is really cool, they really didn't have to kill her to complete the transformation (I'm pretty sure her so-called demise didn't occur until after her transformation in the comics). They could have very easily just had her fall into a coma at the ending.
The reason Magneto moved the pannels is that Stryker ONLY built cerebro to target mutants, so to be able to target humans the pannels needed to be moved (in the original cerebro there were no missing pannels, so, they didn't need to move them) Hope that helps =) Love your reviews!!
That line "Have you tried NOT BEING MUTANT", is just there because the director wants the mutants to be direct reference to gay people. Gays hear this line a lot, especialy from their family (not all ofcourse). So it's like "Have you tried NOT BEING GAY?". Nothing bad with this, but I wanted to mention that.
***** Do they say that to black people? I mean "have your tried not being black"? I don't think it makes sense, because you can't "see the gay" in person. But you can see if someone has different skin color or not. But ultimately, I suppose it does fit blacks too in a indirect way. Black people have been trough some really rough times and there is still racism around. I think X-men movies also handle the subject of being "different"... So I suppose it does fit.
Fantastic review, CL! The only thing I wish you'd brought up was how Stryker impacts Xavier.Xavier believes in a world where man and mutant live in peace. But Stryker is proof that Eric isn't wrong. Stryker adds a new layer to Xavier's story by showing him that his aspiration is noble, the humans may not feel the same way. Like Kelly in X1. This is intensified by Stryker's attempted genocide of mutants and the fact that he used Xavier, a man seeking peace between the races, to do it. -cont-
This was a great review. You should do a spoiler cast on why X2 is one of your favorite movies of all time, as there is plenty more to go into and you only gave it 10 min. Great timing, particually becuase it could coinside with the phenominal Day of Future past release. Lastly, you essentially are proffessor X, far smarter than everyone around you, but still paticent with those of lesser intentligence. In many ways your attitude is very much uplifting. :)
This is the best X-Men movie and one of the best Comic Book movies of all time, it's better than all the MCU movies, X-Men 2 won't be Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 2 is better than it by a little bit.
9:50 - Perhaps the configuration of Cerebro in the X-Mansion allows Xavier to view both human and mutant populations. In Dark Cerebro, Stryker would have configured it to target mutants only. Knowing how the machine works, Magneto resets the panels so that humans are targetable. This is how I've always viewed it, anyway.
I have always believed that ice's brother called the cops because he was jealous. that maybe he sees mutants in a very different way than others. he saw his brother freeze a bowl of soup and thought bobby above himself. kind of like the way lex luthor always viewed superman. he doesn't like the thought of his brother possessing abilities beyond those of normal people so he called the cops to keep him down on his level.
I really loved this movie, but the biggest thing that I can't get around is the fact that when they were doing the whole thing where every human on earth or every mutant on earth had that high-pitched noise ringing in their heads, how is it not mentioned how many people and mutants would have actually died? I mean, SOME people and mutants on earth would have been doing something potentially dangerous at the time that would have required concentration, and that noise would sure cause problems.
@ScoTTishN1NJA I always wait at least 2 years after a superhero film comes out before I review it-- I try to critically analyze them after they've been in the public conscoiusness a long time. -CL
William Stryker is another great villain! He's so twisted using his son as a weapon, and I like that this threat is so monumentally huge with all Mutants at stake *because* of *Charles* and his powers, and how Styker is trying to manipulate him. And of course Magneto's twist of changing the targets at the end. Again the social commentary is topnotch like with Bobby's family not accepting him and handling it in their various ways, mirroring the coming out of a family member as homosexual or something of the like in some families. Also I really enjoyed the callbacks to the first film, like Mystique's scars given to her by Wolverine (which I do believe she only had them appear on her skin there to mess with him), Rogue giving Logan his dogtag back (and him denouncing his past with Weapon X when tossing it), and Magneto's line to Rogue about her hair! Pyro's develop was very enjoyable and realistic, on the other hand Cyclops never got all that much to do unfortunately. But fortunately, he did have at least a tiny scene where he showed he has some martial art experience. My only issue is how the 3rd act is so long with so many problems or story points needing to be resolved. It's not really a pacing issue, it's more so just too many conflicts. Saving Charles, the fight with Lady Deathstrike, Logan confronting Stryker, the X-Jet not working, the water coming into the facility, and later when they tried departing it also was a threat. It's a very fun time though, it's a 8/10
You know, it's almost comedic how little Scott gets to do. In that fight though, he blasts Lady Deathstrike and a guard, dodges, throws 2 quick punches, disarms a guard from his baton and then gets taken out. Very short sequence but would love to see him get more in the MCU hopefully
Definitely considering it. I've also done commentary tracks for movies from a lot of these earlier reviews now and those cover a lot more material too. -CL
Jean knew she was going to become the Phoenix soon enough, hence the hints around the film (the museum scene with her and Scott for example) so if she didn't sacrifice her life she would have become the Phoenix.
You were not the only one thinking of Venom, believe me. Though I am also thinking of the "Villains team-up" from Batman Returns, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, it was handled pretty well in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises, though not so much in The Dark Knight Rises, and NO, I'm not counting Catwoman as a villain, I'm referring to Talia and Bane.
You were wrong on a couple points in this. One that comes to mind is that Charles doesn't and would never have seen Eric as a monster, they remained friends throughout the movie series, and respected each other.
when i first saw this movie on the theaters i was 12 and i thought that he was jealous and thats why called the cops, but now i remember the last shot of the family looking at them made me think that he was both scared and jealous and angry too lol
I agree with most of your points but there is one I slightly disagree with, the Jean death scene. In the first film when the device in lady liberty was destroyed jean looked down as if something was wrong (I think that shows the destruction of the mental barriers that Prof X put in her mind). In X2 there is that scene at the beginning where she can't control her power to read minds. I believe at the end she knew she couldn't control her power maybe she could sense the phoenix. So she tried to
This movie is definitely my favorite of the series. You should give a read to the story it's based on: God Loves, Man Kills (THE BEST underrated story of the X-men). One thing further to be nitpicked: Why does Storm have a Kenyan accent in the first movie, but her normal voice here?
@Geekvolution great review and the point about Iceman's parents reaction to him as a mutant abilities are very true. Most brothers will never call the cops. In fact they will be looking to make money out of his gifts- I nkwo I would lol
I think Iceman's brother is a character that makes sense. Given a little time, Iceman's parents would accept him in my opinion. But there are people who have a dislike for a group and literally nothing will change their minds. An American Dad episode makes that case well. Also it might not be as much about his brother as much as the others. A bunch of strange mutants come into your house, and your relative is with them would make anyone worried. It's the same concept as a loved one bringing in a dangerous looking biker gang and saying they're cool.
Sergio Bocanegra Looks dangerous yes, is he the only that IS dangerous no. It's established in the previous film and at the start of this one that Mutants can look normal, but wield great power. The fact that the brother KNOWS the entire group are mutants is what probably makes him nervous.
I don't know why so many people gave X-men Origins Wolverine such a hard time, to me it's the best of all the xmen films. Please can do a review for it? Because I wanna see and hear someone else's views on the film...
Your college thesis convinced me. I really got annoyed by the Jean Grey ending of this film. The Emma Frost explanation I hear that Singer was going for in X3: Last Stand might have explained it. A better explanation in this film would've been nice though... No one seemed to care that Jean was out of the ship. What happens when Famke Jansenn portrays her I guess.
For me, the main thing about the film, in terms or action set pieces, was the battle between Wolverine and Lady Deathstrike. I definitely like that battle between Wolverine and Lady Deathstrike more than I did the battles with Wolverine and Sabertooth from the first film. it felt much more... edgy, for like of a better term to be used. Wolverine was losing because he was being quickly outmaneuvered and out classed by Lady Deathstrike seemingly at every turn. and it's only through luck (or plot convenience) that he stopped her. and the look of horror and then content on her face as she died, the white rings in her eyes fading as the serum controlling her faded away and she came to her sense, that made me care for this character more than I ever could with Sabertooth. I wasn't even fully 6 year's old when X-men came out way back then, even still, I felt little, if anything, for Sabertooth's demise.
You bringing these plot points up has changed my opinion on which is better. X2 is superior in every way, though some areas not that superior, others the same, & some insanely superior
save the others while killing herself to stop phoenix before it became a problem. I think it might have been a prelude to the 3rd film. It was about a year ago now but I watched commentary (or read an interview) that she knew her powers were becoming to dangerous and they experimented with other ways for her 'suicide'. One that they explained was that she was going to forcefully make scott blast her to death which would have coused massive trauma for cyclops which is why they dropped it.
-cont- It's similar to to the Charles/Eric/Shaw/Moira conjecture in First Class, the major difference being Shaw is the mutant Magneto would become. Here, Stryker and Eric, like you said, are two sides of the same coin. In retrospect, it's even more interesting! And it's especially poetic that Stryker used CHARLES to try to push along his plan. Charles and Stryker are at odds as much as Charles and Eric are. Just thought that was interesting ;) Top notch review anyway. -Josh
Wow that was a mouthful anyways, I really enjoyed this review and I agree that X3 just didn't live up to the first and second. I really wanted to see the phoenix aura/raptor form the comics or even the X2 film, but oh well. 8)
I think the Iceman/parents scene is portrayed as if they had a gay son, especially with the line "have you tried not being a mutant." To me, this is Bryan Singer putting personal experience in the movie. This is his moral message. Parents ask that very question to gay people. Can't you not be gay? No mom, I was born this way. The brother is homophobic and feels betrayed by this, so he turns on him. This scenerio is very real for people who are different in general.
I Can't Remember Well But If I Remember Correctly, Ceribro (I Hope I Sell That Right) is Always tracking Down Mutants Not Humans Which Might Explain The Panels Moving
Hate to break this to you, but it's sounding more and more like there won't be a Magneto film. And if there is, McKllelan has already said he's too old to play the role again, so he won't be in it.
I saw this film before the first one and I wasn't like "What's this guy talking about?" This film is definitely a sequel, the stuff from the first is carried over and continues into this one, but you don't need to se the first film to understand things
Jordan Hageman I had to pull because of a copyright issue, but check out Day 100 of Spawn Year for a more recent and more in-depth review: th-cam.com/video/sxR24fNTsrc/w-d-xo.html
@geekvolution How come in most x men comics jean is dead because she is one of the original 5 x men and is a good character and jean should be put in more of the recent comics like astonishing x men.
Oh, the "Have you tried not being a mutant?" line. I'm surprised Bryan Singer didn't just put "LGBT-allegory" in bright flashing letters across the screen.
Haha good dig at Star Wars with the Anakin Skywalker bit. The scene with the parents is just Brian Singer trying to turn X-Men more into a metaphor for gay people in general.
@Samuel24842 i know how you you feel. all the the x-men movies was great but i believe i a movie focusing on wolverine is awesome. they also added some twists to his origins that sometimes bashed but then again they can because its their movie.
Jean got out of the Blackbird so Brian Singer could end his movie as the ultimate tribute to Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan. Seriously, watch Khan then watch X2.
I somehow disagree with the part on Iceman's family. Their reaction is kinda legit. If you compare it with homosexuality or aids. How will your family react? Would they be happy? Wouldn't they try to make you hide it? I'm not saying they should, don't get me wrong. But you can understand the sentence: "Did you try not being a mutant". They're affraid because he's really different. Maybe the little brother is a little jealous but it's another topic. But not every parent is open minded.
I absolutly love this review, but here's the explaination as to why Bobbies' parents act so stupid: Brian Singer was trying to link the mutant rights to gay rights, and the mom asking if Bobby had tried not being a mutant is a common argument that straights make and the whole scene is a boy comming out to his parents. The brother calling the cops is believable because sometimes newly outed people are beaten/killed right after. I think it was one of the best scenes. But u don't have to aggree.
I think bobby's brother called the cops because he was jealous. because bobby had something that HE wanted but could never have. P.S: I commented this before but for some reason my comments have been disappearing lately. what's the deal?
06:34 If Iceman’s family didn’t seem believable enough, it’s because you haven’t read enough coming out stories. To a gay man, the mom’s line “have you tried not being a mutant” feels far too real and the movie nailed the similarities perfectly.
great analogy
Yes agreed, I actually thought that scene was handled quite well also.
sgm123 As far as I know that parallel was very intentional. But I think Logan has more of an issue with the little brother calling the cops. Which is pretty stupid you gotta admit.
@@annnee6818 Nope, he was clearly jealous. The actor portrayed his immaturity very clearly imo
Bryan Singer did say X Men was just the prologue of the franchise, X2 was the real first movie
@ComandoPadentro Thanks-- not sure how I picked up on that on this viewing. Thanks for watching!

"Have you tried not being a mutant?"
Its a good way to show how some parents deal with their child being different. How they try to shape them to be something else.
"Now that I'm done with my thesis paper..."
*looks at the modern Superhero Rewind episodes*
Good joke.
Kinda wish Cap did this again but more in depth like the First Class Rewind
I can see why he later got cast as Logan Roy.
This is 10 years old... Boy oh boy...
I think the reason that Magneto moved the panels around was because they were set in "mutant mode". In the X-mansion, all the panels are there so you can find both humans and mutants. But some panels were missing in the dam, so they had to be rearranged to find humans.
For Cerebro all I can say is that the panels may be in the position where they only locate mutants N's Magneto switched them to human

Yeah, they pretty much fucked up the Phoenix storyline in x men 3, however. It is soo much better in the comics
@Geekvolution just found your channel wondering have you done a super hero rewind of dark knight.
The reason Magneto moved the pannels is that Stryker ONLY built cerebro to target mutants, so to be able to target humans the pannels needed to be moved (in the original cerebro there were no missing pannels, so, they didn't need to move them) Hope that helps =) Love your reviews!!

Cerebro*

Cerebro can track both mutants and humans
Hate to break this to you, but it's sounding more and more like there won't be a Magneto film. And if there is, McKllelan has already said he's too old to play the role again, so he won't be in it.
I saw this film before the first one and I wasn't like "What's this guy talking about?" This film is definitely a sequel, the stuff from the first is carried over and continues into this one, but you don't need to se the first film to understand things
Where's the Spawn SR
Jordan Hageman I had to pull because of a copyright issue, but check out Day 100 of Spawn Year for a more recent and more in-depth review: th-cam.com/video/sxR24fNTsrc/w-d-xo.html
Thanks Cap
+Geekvolution The reason why Magneto had to move the panels of Serebro around is obvious. One panel half detects humans snd the other detects mutants
@geekvolution
How come in most x men comics jean is dead because she is one of the original 5 x men and is a good character and jean should be put in more of the recent comics like astonishing x men.
Yes, this. Thank you, Joe!
this movie is so fantastic
Ah, found it, thanks, great review by the way!
how is this a review if no mention of the action scene? specially the most memorable action scene in CBM history.
Think about this: Logan can never fisit Magneto in Prison, because this would give Erik Metal to escape!!
They're pretty neck and neck for me.

@Samuel24842 i know how you you feel. all the the x-men movies was great but i believe i a movie focusing on wolverine is awesome. they also added some twists to his origins that sometimes bashed but then again they can because its their movie.
I think the "Have you tried not being a mutant" is a parallel to kids coming out as Gay
Awesome review!!!
@Geekvolution Michael Fassbender is Magneto in my eyes now anyway.
@Geekvolution
Liked the review, and agree with most of it. I personally would give the movie a 9 put of 10.
Yes because Tony Stark, Loki and Hulk totally dont overshadow everyone else in Avengers (sarcasm).
Jean got out of the Blackbird so Brian Singer could end his movie as the ultimate tribute to Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan. Seriously, watch Khan then watch X2.
4 people tried not being a mutant.
colossus?
"It just makes all humans look stupid." Too late for that dude lol
I somehow disagree with the part on Iceman's family. Their reaction is kinda legit. If you compare it with homosexuality or aids. How will your family react? Would they be happy? Wouldn't they try to make you hide it? I'm not saying they should, don't get me wrong. But you can understand the sentence: "Did you try not being a mutant". They're affraid because he's really different. Maybe the little brother is a little jealous but it's another topic. But not every parent is open minded.
if u haven't watched this film yet, don't! SPOILER ALERT... other than that, good review!
@jiopa i believe so,since bryan singer himself is gay, though that works really well for the x-men movies i believe anyways
I agree. When everything from Nightcrawler's mouth is a bible quote or about his faith, it makes him feel one dimensional.
hope you were nice to him
What are you talking about? Valkyrie was a great movie! (other than the accents, I guess . . .)
I think bobby's brother called the cops because he was jealous. because bobby had something that HE wanted but could never have.
P.S: I commented this before but for some reason my comments have been disappearing lately. what's the deal?
