The meantone temperament made my ears bend at first, but after getting a little used to it, it grew on me. Always adore Dowland, and now have to learn this one myself. Great performance and vid!
Thank you!! Yes, it's funny that at first even the intervals that sound cleaner on meantone sound out of tune for us just because of how used we are to equal temperament!
@@RhadMusic Indeed -- and certain chords are especially "spicy" (to use the jazz parlance) for their ultra-dissonance when compounded with the alien intonation. All that aside, the composition reminds me a little of Sweelinck's toccatas, especially the really chromatic ones with their slow lines wrapped around by flights of sixteenths and even faster filigree. Glorious stuff...
